And whats that triangle symbol badge he's wearing represent?? Freemasonry?

Just close down the Oscars, fewer and fewer people watch it anyway, and the votes for best actor, picture, etcetera does not represent the customers opinion, only total sales are the customers votes. Almost every year all these critics and Hollywood stars dig up something to complain and divide the nation over, when in reality why should anybody care what these folks think? Most of the films talked about, some were pretty good action movies and some had a somewhat interesting story, the only drawback on any of them was their point of view which all by itself tried to convey a message, which nobody needs or wants when being entertained. Hollywood stars and those that surround Hollywood are under the impression that the populace of the World cares about their political and ideological ideas, when in fact nobody should care what they believe, it's a make believe world and that's what Hollywood is.

-2 ( +5 / -7 )

If you don't like the Academy Awards, fine. But why should they be closed just because you don't like Hollywood?

Some of us enjoy escapism and good stories. And film, as a medium, has always had a message, sometimes subtle, sometimes less so.

-2 ( +2 / -4 )

I watch at least 1 movie a day, sometimes 2. Rarely do I ever stop watching until the end, unless it's just complete and utter garbage!

Such was the case with Black Panther. Had the character colours been reversed, that racism-filled pile of crap would never have been allowed to be released. So Lee throws a tantrum? Pffft, who cares.

-3 ( +4 / -7 )

I think the Oscars should be followed by a show where people moan about how racist / sexist and generally unfair and unrepresentative the winners were.

Menace II Society was a Hughes Brothers film but do agree with your assessment. Actually Do The Right Thing was his best flick but had no nomination.

Of Black Panther, BlacKKKlansman and Green Book, Green Book is in a different league and left much more of an impact. They call Green Book the typical white savior cliche movie but what about the typical racist cop cliche that Spike Lee put in BlacKKKlansman which did not exist in the book? If Green Book was made by Spike Lee, no one would be complaining. If Farrelly made BlacKKKlansman, people would call it a racist movie.

Omg. Race race race. I'm so glad I left America. Everyone in media is obsessed with skin color gender and sexual preference. It's just a stupid trade show.

Hollywood is becoming more and more detached from the person on the street and irrelevant by the day.

Must have been watching a different Black Panther. The film warned against racism and isolation.

Menace II Society is a great film, but he thing is, it's not a Spike Lee film. It was directed by the Hughes Brothers.

And whats that triangle symbol badge he's wearing represent?? Freemasonry?

The dollar bill? Some kind of anti-Klan symbol?

Is it the lack of entertainment value you bewail or is it the progressive messaging you could do without?

Nah. Back in the day, so-called message films like Guess Who's Coming to Dinner, To Kill a Mockingbird, In the Heat of the Night all had their detractors, too.

The true failure of "Green Book" winning was that it stole the award and spotlight from the very deserving "Roma." Roma was the runaway best film of the year, and it wasn't even close. The Academy seems to shy away from foreign-made films for Best Picture, though, preferring to restrict them to the Best Foreign Film category. It's a shame. Roma is fantastic.

@Anonymous

The average citizen's concerns......

How do I pay the rent?

How do we feed and educate the kids, pay the mortgage, etc.

I lost my job.

My health is failing.

Etc

Many Hollywood types despite being rich, famous and comfortable seem to do a lot of complaining.

Is it the lack of entertainment value you bewail or is it the progressive messaging you could do without?

How ironic that the director is praising Shinola as the future of Detroit, a company that was fined and sanctioned by the FTC for lying about saying it's "American made", but instead more like "assembled in America with imported parts". Well, maybe the Detroit auto industry should also do the same, re-arrange a Toyota and slap a Chevy logo on it, might actually come out with a good car.

Roma is fantastic.

Yep. It's one of the most beautiful and powerfully simple films I've seen in years.

Without a host and a strict speech timer rule, the Oscars was a bit over 3 hours long. And ratings are up 12%, driven by a 13% gain among young-adult viewers who may have been coaxed back to the Oscars by a broader slate of more popular nominated films.

He said he didn't finish the film, so he didn't see that at the end of the film, Wakanda admitted that they were wrong about it. (That's what ya get if ya don't know how something ends - and the Sixth Sense is about a guy saving a kid, lol)

The average citizen's concerns......

Etc

"How do I be treated like any other person, instead of being looked at suspiciously just because of the color of my skin; doesn't matter if I'm poor or rich?"

Just because it's not your concern doesn't mean it's not a concern for many other people. Gotta put yourself in their shoes. If ya can't do that, you will never know what their real concerns are (only the superficial ones - what ya can see)

Even Roma carries a message

"Movies with a message make impact beyond Oscars glitz"

https://japantoday.com/category/entertainment/movies-with-a-message-make-impact-beyond-oscars-glitz

Participant's movies are paired with off-screen activism. For "Roma," the company joined the National Domestic Workers Alliance to push for labor protections and supported the launch of an app that provides benefits to house cleaners such as paid time off.

While many philanthropists and politicians want to tackle problems such as poverty or homelessness, "they are never aligned with a major studio that may be spending $20, $40 or $60 million to sell that issue to the public," Budnick said.

"We're here to be that aligner," he said.

Watching the Oscars is so cringeworthy. The acceptance speeches in particular make you want to reach for the sickbucket.

They put you off watching films for life which isn’t necessarily a bad thing I suppose.

-4 ( +1 / -5 )

Why was Black Panther nominated? Infinity War was a much, much better film.

For once I can unequivocally say, I agree with you. 110% spot on.

Yes, but I think you don’t like them because they don’t share your politics. If they were railing against liberals rather than Trump, you’d like them.

I just find the majority of them cringeworthy people. I remember watching Meryl Streep, a talented women, making the most stomach-churning, saccharine acceptance speech while wearing a preposterous outfit.

Pathetic stuff.

"We know what the truth is," said co-writer and producer Nick Vallelonga. "We know how hard we tried to respect everyone involved and just tell the best story we could."

The Green Book should not have won. There were better movies. It is another example of White America believing they should write the narrative of "The Black Experience". Then they finds ways to profit off that experience.

That last part indicates that it isn't necessarily factual.

"A couple of times I've seen 'white savior' comments and I don't think that's true.

I saw the movie, and I think there is some truth. (I am Caucasian.)

"Many of us in the black community would like to see greater recognition for movies about the black experience and not just for movies that make the black experience comfortable for white audiences," wrote television commentator and author Keith Boykin.

This says it all for people of color and people who complain that they are tired of talking about race. POC in the US want honesty, and some Caucasians want to mostly ignore it because it makes some of them uncomfortable. They would prefer to wear the blinders.

It is basically one side wants an intervention and go to counseling together and the other side doesn't want the counseling and doesn't believe they have a problem. (Denial)

Infinity War was a much, much better film.

It was also riding off the success of "Black Panther" that was released before Infinity Wars and did better than the previous Marvel movies, and those same characters were included in Infinity Wars.

Infinity War should have thanked "Black Panther"!

”Green book,” was a movie that didn’t even deserve a nomination.

A movie that was pretty much about a white driver of the one of the first recognized black piano players. A movie that didn’t focus on the piano player that helped break barriers but instead focused on a white driver from an era when America was segregated and many of the places he had to travel to would never even allow a black person to drive on their streets.

Furthermore, a movie that capitalized on the belief that the movie would be about the piano player only to find out that he wasn’t the central character.

Green book

A very misleading title. A green book was a book that helped blacks travelers know places they could eat, sleep, shopped, or have their vehicles fixed because most places did not allow black people to use or enter such establishments.

But a movie about a white driver is clearly a fitting title.

This has been a very good year for movie goers. Some years it seems like nothing is worthy of Best Picture Oscar, but this year there were many such movies. The only down side is that no matter who wins, someone else will be disappointed about it.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

Seems some people are upset about diversity and POC having a say in it.

Back to your segregated ivory towers, if it upsets you so much.

@1glenn

I agree with you. 2018 was a great year for movies. I think the main issue here was that many people, on all sides, even critics, thought this movies wasn’t that great of a movie. The acting was great but the script was disappointing to most. Especially given that the biographical film was very one sided and badly researched. There were far more deserving films.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

From start to finish there was so much inclusivity, from Black to Asian to Gay etc. Not to mention many non Caucasian winners. Point: it still wasn't good enough for some. This is where you get that reverse racism...

Black Panther is possibly the most overrated movie of all time. Frankly Aquaman was considerably better

The first Marvel movie to ever win an Oscar! One of the highest grossing movies ever. That movie has tons of accomplishments despite being snubbed by the Oscars and others. Unfortunately for the haters, the Black Panther franchise has plenty of receipts for their success, and it will do equally as well for the next movie.

Does DC have any Oscars for live action movies?
