"We weren't going to change the movie we wanted to make just because of a few countries with -- for a lack of a better term -- backward beliefs," she said.

The entertainment business pretends they haven’t been illogically representing same sex and interracial relationships in their shows. Brit TV and now US TV shows are inundated by it. It’s at the point where you just wait for the gay couple or the mixed marriage folks to show up, even though the population numbers don’t logically support their representations. I guess the phrase “be real” is dead.

If I understand correctly you are complaining about a movie situated centuries in the future dealing with faster-than-light intergalactic travel, alien empires, robots with artificial intelligence, etc. But what you find "illogical" or not "real" is how they choose to represent races and sexual preferences?

Well done to the makers of Lightyear. If individuals find a one second peck on the cheek between two cartoon characters "offensive", they are beyond help.

Indonesia, Malaysia, Bahrain, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Oman, the Palestinian Territories, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Syria.

Just thank your lucky stars you don't live in one of these intolerant and hateful cesspits.

Well said. Stay the course. These people and nations truly are backward.

Good for Pixar. Extra hug for using the term 'backward beliefs'.

On a similar theme, Saudi Arabia's censors introduced to the world the concept of 'homosexual colours' recently.

Read: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-middle-east-61813390 'Saudi authorities seize rainbow toys for promoting homosexuality'.

So next time you go into a DIY store, seeking some paint, be sure to ask if they have some.

I don't know... a lot of these nations will allow people to marry children and animals... that's pretty progressive /s

Instead of disney profiting from this movie, pirates, who have no issues with deleting the offending scenes, will profit.  Bootleg movies back in season.

If I understand correctly.

Nope, it went light years over your head.

-6 ( +3 / -9 )

Diversity, tolerance and inclusion means you have to accept and respect the beliefs and traditions of people in those countries.

That’s exactly what they are doing by not forcing the movie onto those markets.

How splendidly generous of Disney!

This is what I want more movie companies to think like. Have some guts - good for them.

…the scene in question is actually more of a brief peck between two long-married characters who have a child.

Only 35 out of 195 countries have the “backwards belief” that marriage is anything society deems it to be. A backwards, false belief evident in this journalist’s description of the scene where there is kiss is between two long-married characters. Two characters of the same sex, straight or gay, are not married by any objective standard.

Eh, their loss. People who want to watch the movie in the countries that banned Lightyear will no doubt find a way to do so. Disney/Pixar isn't going to lose sleep or money over this.

'Lightyear' makers unfazed by bans in places with 'backward beliefs'

Now I don't really care one way or another, to each their own but I would like to point out that over 71 countries in the world being LGBTQ, etc.. is illegal another 43, it is illegal to show it publicly.

That is 114 countries out of 195 containing the vast majority of the people on the planet.

I may not agree with these places but calling that many people and places "backwards" isn't going to get them to like you or change anytime soon.

-3 ( +0 / -3 )

Some here and on other sites have asked who is the actual backwards place?

Now I have spent my life in a strange world, because of my location as a young man, because of my work, I was often involved, socialised, worked with members of the LGBTQ community and by most non LGBTQ people standards I have far far far more contact with this community than the general public.

But even with that, at most and I really mean AT Most 10% of those I know are part of the LGBTQ community, I honestly know more people involved in strange religions ( I mean cults) than LGBTQ and again I have worked for years within the committee due to certain circumstances.

So the question many ask is is Hollywood's depiction of LGBTQ being as prominent as it is trying to show, accurate?

This gender is fluid, there are 70 plus genders, etc.. is a bit over the top.

Homosexuals exist, no doubt in my mind and nothing will change them and that is fine, but this stuff we have today that we can change gender when we feel like it well is a bit much.

My best friend Ricky is gay, I knew that back in elementary school and I am heterosexual also figured that out back then, neither of us can change certain facts and one is we are both male and he and I understand he is a rare situation compared to me, he has been and still is my best friend and the only friend I still have from childhood but we know who and what we are.

Who cares? Certainly not Disney

Well obviously they do care.

You see if they didn't care they would have ignored it all, remember it was originally "14" countries plastered all over the news.(reality at least 71 based simply on the fact being gay in those 71 countries is illegal).

If they didn't care they would say nothing, ignore, etc...

But they didn't, they put out comments, statements, even going so far as to release a statement saying they don't care.

Which means they do care and it really does seem to bother them and many others.

@Bronco.

Which traditions do you want us to respect? Punishing people for falling in love? Murdering journalists? Forbidding elections? Criminalising dissent? Treating women like farm animals and denying them an education?

Many of these countries have not evolved past the Western Middle Ages. Having smartphones and money doesn't make you worthy of being regarded as a civilised nation.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

Nope, they’re a global brand and corporation. They have whole departments in charge of putting out statements and press in response to something like this.

Correct and that department downplayed things big time.

It says it doesn't care about backwards places, it claims only 14 countries.

But as any LGBTQ site will tell you that number is minimum 71 and more likely 114 not 14 countries.

Why do we know this? Well again look up LGBTQ rights sites, homosexuality is illegal in 71 countries, and another 43 countries it is not illegal but and public display of homosexual act are illegal.

Now folk dow voting me in this simple fact will not change the fact, 71 countries still criminalize homosexuality and 43 still ban it in public and that means this movie is not available as is in those countries, not 14 but a minimum of 71 to 114.

Walt must be rolling in his grave over the depravity that has become the norm for disney.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

I’m with Rain Man on this. Disney could care less whether it’s banned in China or not. I use China because it’s Asia’s biggest market. Toy story 4 made over a billion worldwide in its box office takings. The Chinese proportion was a mere 3%. That’s not going to break the bank for Disney. Of course they’d like that 3%, but they’ve already told Chinese authorities they won’t be cutting anything from the movie to satisfy their release requirements. Good on them too.

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

enjoying Disney dig their own grave. Go woke, go broke.

Ignore the virtue signalers out there.

What these useful idiots don't understand or ignore is people are not pushing back against the idea of homosexuality. They're pushing back against it being indoctrinated in their children.

Its the same as drag queen story time.

Its grooming.

You're either for grooming or against it.

-4 ( +0 / -4 )

The great thing about the internet is that the people in these countries will still see the movie if they want to. That means that even though their governments want to hide the fact that sometimes people who are the same sex can, gasp, love, their people will see it, and that actually, it's no bigger a deal than a mommy and daddy kissing in a cartoon.

The world is moving forward without the bigots. We're leaving them behind. Relics of a bygone day.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

What these useful idiots don't understand or ignore is people are not pushing back against the idea of homosexuality. They're pushing back against it being indoctrinated in their children.

You can't 'indoctrinate' sexual desire. It's just there however distasteful you find it. If you are not gay, no end of 'indoctrination' by Disney will make you become gay.

Sexual orientation is quite different from, say, religion. With religion it is quite possible to convince a young child over many years of strict punishment that several fish can feed thousands or humans can walk on water and then fly to a warm place after being dead for several days.

How dare they indoctrinate these children with the idea that two people could love each other? How dare they not be taught proper right-wing values of hatred, distrust, and persecution?

Duly noted.

I repeat; You are either for grooming or against it.

No binary extremist thinking here. Carey on.

And I do support indoctrinating children with ideas of love, rather than right wing anger and hatred.
