Make it so.

78 yrs old is not the new 35.
As long as the role "fits" his age, I'll be happy. But I still won't sign up for CBS Access.
I'm thinking a role like Cpt Pike in a chair with 1 light for yes, 2 lights for no. Stewart already has the chair from that other movie series ...

"Once more unto the breach..." comes to mind here. That, and:
"The game's afoot"

The new Picard series will be 20 years after Nemesis. Nemesis is in 2379, so 2399. Romulus was destroyed to launch the Kelvin universe in 2387. So.......

I'm glad the franchise is moving slowly away from the narrow confines of recent shows. I mean, I love Discovery, esp with its nods to TOS but maybe it's time to go forwards.
I imagine that as this apparently is set in his post Starfleet years it's going to be a rather different show to what has boldy gone before...

@TH, couldn't agree more. It's all in the story. Let's all be patient.

Reports of my assimilation are greatly exaggerated. Captain Picard.
Hope the Borg will be around as well. Data? How about #1? Troy? Jordy? Warf?
Or maybe he comes in as the Admiral in a whole new series, that seems more likely? I love the new Star Trek Movies. In to darkness was a great movie.
The Netflix Star Trek is not that bad either.

@expat
Isn't that the only role he's ever played?
No. He is stage actor by profession.-https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dyKnLGT74TQ
And I guess you have never seen an X-man movie either.
Unless you are being sarcastic.
Here is everything you need to know about Sir Patrick Stewart.

Good to see the original time line restored with Picard back. He is to old to be a ships Captain and his experience would suit a fleet Admiral. He would need a flag ship but wouldn't be Captain. New crew as we know Jordy is a Captain now from Voyager. Admiral Picard with Captain Nog may be interesting. (Nog from DS9). This gives Quark a avenue back into the series.
Discovery series has a major flaw with the Klingon makeover being extremely unpopular. They seem more fake and less scary than that of TNG and DS9. And seriously we know they speak klingon but just imagine they have the universal translator on at all times. Reading the subtitles takes away from whats happening on screen and gets tiresome fast.
Guest appearances from Voyager crew and DS9 can enhance the new series they have much they can explore and it is a whole new Universe that has only partially been discovered.
I am excited with the possibilities.

damn Stewart is timeless I hope i look as good as him at 78, Im a Trekky tragic from way back, cant wait for the reboot....Warp 9 ..ENGAGE!

Hmm, I hope not. The characters were fine in their time but don't have the lasting appeal of a Picard or a Janeaway. I hope the new series does something relatively new, rather than overkill with the fan service. Well, maybe a little cameo if they really insist...
Subtitles don't bother me, they've been used as far back as The Motion Picture. As for their appearance, I think it's referred to in DS9 and later explored in Enterprise (and Discovery) on the experiments to make them look human (as in TOS klingons). Besides, there's many different types of klingon - it's a big empire!
Be great to see Patrick Stewart as Picard again. I imagine it might well be the character's swan song and he'll exit the mythos with style and panache.

The headline should read....
Film and TV have lost their imagination or too cheap to pay for good writers to come up with different stories so ABC is revisiting The Next Generation.

They're not, though. They are doing a series based around the character of Jean Luc Picard. It will be a very different vehicle. I imagine it will be post-Starfleet. He might even be in exile.
Look how very different the character of Professor Xavier is in Logan. And that turned out to be one of the best X-Men films to date.
Can't see Patrick Stewart getting involved unless he has complete faith in the premise.

All I wanna know is if Michael Dorn is going to return as Lt. Worf.
"May I inform you, sir, that your attempt to hold the landing party with a non- functioning weapon was an act of unmitigated gall.
"It didn't fool you, huh?"
"I admire gall."

Patrick Stewart to reprise his role. Not too hard I would think. I mean Captain Pickard was a bald, old-looking thin dude first time round.

This is without a doubt the best news of the month! Welcome back Captain Picard!

Patrick Stewart's appearance in Extras still cracks me up. One of the funniest things he's done and you can see he's having a ball, sending himself up like that.

Love it !

As long as I don't have to sign up for CBS Access just to watch it. I'd love to see Discovery, but three streaming subscriptions are enough for me, I'm not going to add a fourth just so I can watch Star Trek.

There has long been an idea (and one repeated in the fan universe) of a Star Trek series set at the Academy.
Starfleet Academy would be a great role for Picard. He could be the Superintendent, an Admiral whose job it is to ride herd on the next batch of Starfleet's future.
The benefits? He doesn't have to do too much physical acting. The Supe's job would be that of a leader, a moral guide, etc. He's great at those damn speeches, let's face it.
The majority of the screen time would then be devoted to the cadets themselves, and their times around the Academy along with them on their training voyages. A conspiracy within the Federation itself could be a standing plotline if they want to do a season long run like they did in Discovery. Heck, maybe the President of the Federation could be suspected of colluding with the Cardassians.

Hey, David, I think chatter is pointing to something like an Academy gig. Or Picard in exile. Or even a trial scenario. I think there's plenty of scope for a season arc that Jean Luc can preside over with his gravitas and sense of honour.
It's funny, go back and watch the first series of TNG and it's a bit ropey compared to later seasons. What's great is the network gave it a chance to grow and become so beloved. Hence the universally positive reaction to this announcement.
