yes, it applies to all countries, the class struggle between rich and poor, if you watch his other movies, it's very distinctive on class struggles.

I thought last years Japanese movie call Shoplifters should won the award.

Someone on this website commented on a previous "Parasite" article that the movie should cause Japanese people to reflect on their own society and whatnot. I thought that was a ridiculous statement, considering that there is absolutely no doubt that the makers of "Parasite" got some of their influences from the Japanese movie "Shoplifters" that came out in 2017. That movie was about a family resorting to shoplifting to survive, and the movie was based on the rise in shoplifting incidents in Japan showing that Japanese directors/producers can make movies dealing with larger societal context just as well as any other country.
