'Terrace House' comedian Ryota Yamasato marries actress Yu Aoi

If there’s one show you need to be watching on Netflix right now, it’s "Terrace House," the Japanese reality show that puts singles together in a luxury house, with their goal being to find love and realize their dreams.

Kind of like "Big Brother," but a whole lot calmer and more enjoyable to watch, "Terrace House" has become a worldwide hit, with viewers getting a firsthand insight into what it’s like to date and find love in Japan.

And one of the people filling in the gaps and educating us with some witty comments along the way is 42-year-old Ryota Yamasato, who sits in as one of six commentators on the show. Yamasato is a Japanese comedian and radio and television personality who first became popular as one half of the comedy duo Nankai Candies.

Now he’s become a well-known face to millions around the world, with "Terrace House" viewers drawn to his no-holds-barred comments criticizing some of the house members, and his cynical views on youth and love.

However, the cynic has now gone off-brand by tying the knot with 33-year-old Japanese actress Yu Aoi.

Aoi is one of Japan’s most famous actresses, who’s starred in dozens of films over the years, including "Tokyo!," "Rurouni Kenshin" and "Tokyo Ghoul." However, she’s perhaps best known for appearing in the 2006 hit film "Hula Girls," which tells the story of a group of young women who saved their town in Fukushima from financial ruin by forming a hula girl troupe.

Most recently, Aoi received the Japan Academy Prize Association’s award for Outstanding Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role for the 2017 movie "Birds Without Names."

The marriage announcement came as a surprise to many, with morning TV shows discussing the topic and Yamasato’s comedy friends reminding everyone that he once topped Yoshimoto Kogyo’s “most unattractive person in Japan” poll for three consecutive years back in 2006.

However, Yamasato, or Yama-chan as he’s affectionately known, is an incredibly likeable character, and according to reports, Aoi and he were introduced by a mutual friend, Shizuyo Yamasaki. Shizu-chan, as she’s known to friends, co-starred with Aoi in "Hula Girls" and was the other half of Yamasato’s comedy duo Nankai Candies.

Although Yamasato and Aoi appeared on TV program "Zenryoku! Datsuryoku Times" in August last year, reports say the two only became romantically linked this year.

The couple went out to dinner with their mutual friend at the beginning of the year, and instantly hit it off. They began formally dating in April, and after immediately knowing they were meant to be together, they registered their marriage on Monday.

Yamasato was seen talking about Aoi in January, saying he was thankful for the care and respect she’d shown to him. Anyone who’s watched Yamasato on "Terrace House" will know that he’s often the butt of jokes doled out by the other commentators, so it’s nice to hear he’s getting some respect for a change.

Now that Yamasato has tied the knot with one of the most beautiful and talented actresses in Japan, we can’t wait to see whether or not it will affect his onscreen persona. Will he become more soft-hearted and forgiving towards the house members on "Terrace House?" Somehow we don’t think so. In fact, maybe the shot fired by Cupid’s arrow will fire him up to become even more involved in the lovelorn storylines on the show.

You may still be right, would not be the first time such arrangements have been made or PR reasons. Yukio Mishima for example.

This is like when Domino's tries to get me to eat pizza with corn and mayonnaise on it. I'll choose what I watch and eat, thank you.

She's much taller than him, if he steps out of line, she can squish him like a bug

Terrace House might be good for people start learning japanese.

For people with a good command of the language, it can also help if you have insomnia or other sleeping problems.

''I will go buy some bread. Tadaima. Okaeriii. What did you do today? Nothing unusual. I will go to the toilet'' zzzZZZ

The slow pace and dull gaps in Terrace House coupled with the obviously “set-up but unscripted” situations is something stoners enjoy, or so I was told....

A garbage article from the garbage dispensers at SoraNews. Thanks again

Congratulations! A lot of comedians here usually strike it big with the ladies no matter what they look like or age.

My wife usually skips the commentary part of Terrace House. It saves time.

You can't beat a good laugh to start the day. No ta, it's garbage as Belrick says. I'll stick to Russian Doll, Lodge 49 and Catch 22 for the moment. Good luck to the happy couple.

More people talking about Terrace House than the actual couple. For people that dislike TH you guys sure do talk a lot about it in the comments.

I confess I watched the whole Terrace House Aloha State with my wife, purely out of curiosity about the mindset of "halfs" and how they cope with life in Japan and overseas, almost all of them so open minded and easy going it made me wanted to watch the next season... just to find it unbearable.... as someone pointed, totally dull, unnatural and very japanese, people anxious 24/7 about what the others might think about them and planning the smallest actions in the house so not to 'disturb' the others. There was a whole episode revolving on an 'argument' when one of the participants tried to virtue sign telling others not to sleep in the common room.

Not surprised. I knew from her acting that she like the guys who can make her laugh. Her beauty is average but acting is little bit above average, like 6/10.

True. But Yu Aoi isn't really the most attractive either. I guess both just enjoy each other's company, based on things other than superficial matters? Not everything is a beauty contest.

Now, if he were marrying Aoi Sora on the other hand...................

the whole show is just one big couch potato commentary show. Its one big snooze fest, great way to put you to sleep if you have insomnia

That one comment from Soranews about Japan Today's comments always being so negative just feels so true now, 99% of the articles I've read here had a bunch of negative comments, have just looked up the 'terrace house' thinking it'd be bad and utter garbage like the people here says, I must say, it's much better than 'big brother' at least :/

Terrace House is utter garbage

It’s a rehash of “The Real World and Road Rules” combined into an awful boring TV nightmare although their crib looks fantastic, but that’s about it.

"This is like when Domino's tries to get me to eat pizza with corn and mayonnaise on it."

Domonoes regardless, corn and mayonnaise are my favourite pizza toppings, as long as they are accompanied with shyake (salmon) and grated onion...
