Some folks just gotta bitch for bitching sake! It's just a movie and not a social revolution!

the viewing audience is overwhelmingly white and male. Yet producers force women and minorities into starting roles for no other reason than to appear diverse.

No one should be surprised it sucks just as much as 7

Maybe in America. But I don't think that's accurate for the rest of the world.

I thought it was too long and dull in places, the same criticism I directed at The Force Awakens. The CGI was bad too. Disney is flogging a dead horse with this franchise, the law of diminishing returns being ably demonstrated.

Jpn_guy - calm down, calm down.

was what I said factually wrong? No.

Young white males, who are the overwhelming audience for this movie, naturally want to imagine themselves in the lead roles.

If they can’t, game over. The movie will be seen because it’s Star Wars, but not enjoyed, which is the overwhelming response after the first weekend.

the worst Star Wars episode ever. The Phantom Menace is way better than this.

It was slow and felt like the whole movie was a plot based on pulling the rug out from under the feet of viewers.

The director telegraphed many scenes only to turn on that telegraphed expectation at the last minute as another gotcha. That happened throughout the movie and started to get old.

Then there was the serious plot holes. The fleet is running out of fuel, but the first order doesn't just jump ahead of the fleet and surround them. First order fighters cannot overwhelm one rebel cruiser. Stealth technology that works when the plot needs it and stops working when the plot needs it. Luke is a whiny cry baby (not much a change in character) until Yoda schools him about the virtue of rebounding from failure. Why didn't Yoda give him that speech earlier before Luke was self-exiled?

The acting was the best of any star wars. I'll give the cast and director that. Still, I've never seen so many close ups and constant tears in a star wars movie.

I really enjoyed it--exciting, entertaining movie with lots of scenes and tropes from the original trilogy with cool new twists. There were a couple plot holes/unnecessary bloated parts (was Poe's mutiny and the casino planet detour really necessary? Rey's mastery of the Force was a bit sudden) but the characters that were flat and stereotypical in TFA became more 3D and likable, and the story can definitely go in many more directions.

Saw the 3D version this past weekend. An amazing film. It needs to be seen on the big screen in that format. . . .

some people need to learn to spell "spoiler alert".

Especially when it comes to gender, it is normal for people to need to see role-models who are superficially similar - when they're preschoolers. By the time a person is done with adolescence, they should have enough life experience to be able to relate to anyone of any gender or ethnic group. An inability to do so is a sign of seriously impaired psycho-social development.

Yeah... That casino planet part for me was pretty bad. The rest of the movie I enjoyed though. Even liked the porgs more than I thought I would... and BB8 just gets better.

Laughed quite loudly at one point and nobody else did so I'm guessing people in Japan don't know about Hardware Wars.

Well, I loved it. One of the pleasures of the series is being caught up in the sheer joyous journey of it all. The epic battles, characters you love and the battle between good and evil. Not surprising that Lucas had a template all ready to go, his love of Flash Gordon shines through the original trilogy. Not to mention the Kurosawa influences (The Hidden Fortress) which led to bickering droids; C3PO and R2D2.

And of course, the aliens. Whether it’s banthas, bothans or bewildered (mmmm) porgs – everybody has their favorites. Who didn’t want to be in amongst the scum of the galaxy at Mos Eisley? Or pod racing in the much-maligned Phantom Menace?

Star Wars has always highlighted diversity; from the first trilogy one can clearly see that space is not just filled with white males. You can leave that to the likes of Robert A Heinlein, if that’s your thing. Strong females like Leia, Padme Amidala (Israeli). African American actors like Billy Dee Williams, James Earl Jones, Samuel L Jackson. Those who complain of diversity are missing the point. Why on earth should the galaxy be anything but diverse?

Lucas himself is married to an African American, Mellody Hobson. If the Star Wars universe can’t reflect the modern world with all its myriad of different peoples it would be a very monotone place indeed.

Sure, the Casino world was a diversion and not entirely necessary but I think it's leading to something in the future. We'll see, I guess!
