One of Huston's finest along with The Treasure of the Sierra Madre (also starring Walter Huston).

Man, I loved this movie, and the whole noir genre, as a child. Still watching them now.
Speed
What a coincidence. I just watched it again yesterday. The story is a little hard to follow but the characters are very memorable esp. Sam Spade.
BTW, I don't know why Spade, Archer and Spade's secretary thought Mary Astor's character Mrs. O'Shaughnessy was such a knock out. She looked pretty plain Jane to me.
