The evidence of free speech and thought is obvious; the 24/7 onslaught of hate towards Trump would never be allowed under Obama; he got a free pass for everything he did

Obama grew the economy for 8 consecutive yrs DOW rose by 230%, unemployment went from 10%-4%

he created more jobs in his last 4yrs than Trump's 1st 4yrs. consistently had quarters of 2%+ actually higher than Trump. He did this after being handed the GFC and while the Republicans held the house and senate. He managed to do it without insulting every second person and dividing AMerica more than anytime in modern memory. No Obama wasn't perfect but he did a hell of a lot better job at running American than Trump or Bush

but in the real world it is leftist politics that lead to antisemitism.

That's what the far right would like you to believe.

Conveniently forgetting that left wingers were the first to be locked up and beaten on the streets, in Nazi Germany.

As for Israel, people of all religions, races and nationalities have been speaking our against its illegal acts for 70 years. Including Jewish intellectuals and authors of great standing.

Speaking of which, maybe those who are quick to offer up their own alternate takes on factual history should actually read the novel?

Reading most of these comments is like passing through a portal into an alternative reality.

Right wing nutters don't need to worry, most do not read!!!

This isn't true, actually.

Biggest racism gigs today are anti-White brown supremacism and Christophobia in support of Islamic terrorism. Both flourished under Obama.

Reads to me as Qanon filth.

And an excuse for all the excess of the far right. Shame to see this get another outing here.

Unfortunately, with more and more people online become of social isolating, this kid of putridity will be more and more common.

So a story about how no banksters went to prison for the 2008 banking/congress greed is next year? Got it.

and do you really think anybody in wall street or bankers are going to go to prison this time around. Trump is preparing his own tea party as we speak.

trump is not for anybody, he is for himself.

Trump can't/doesn't read books which makes him the kinda guy his base can root for. Their presidunce has even admitted at Trump rallies that the admiration is mutual since he loves "people who are poorly educated" (as long as they vote for him, natch). Without the benighted support of these "ordinary" folk the fictional demagogues lampooned in "It Can't Happen Here" and "The Plot Against America" could never have risen from the swamp to take power. It is uncanny that America has spawned a real-life windbag avatar of "Buzz" Windrip, suggesting Sinclair Lewis's prediction that " fascism will come to America wrapped in a flag and carrying a cross." is also a warning the world cannot ignore.

How can a 16-year-old novel be ‘daring’ when the moron-in-chief is so much more over-the-top than a well-written novel by an intelligent author?

Bought this book in a second hand book-shop in Chiang Mai last year and was surprised at Roth writing uncannily accurate stuff in 2004 on what is happening in America in 2016.

Recommend reading for all rational minded people.

Milosevic pulled that same sob story that Trump is pulling today - 'Oh everybody is persecuting us (Serbs, White Americans, whatever)' and then they commit gross atrocities against their alleged 'opponents' thru concentration camps, genocide, rape, etc. Milosevic committed 'ethnic cleansing' in the former Yugoslavia, Trump kidnaps ethnic children and puts them in concentration camps like the Dirty War regime of Argentina did.

Fascism is fascism. The actions speak for themselves.

All of this is untrue, actually.

"How wrong I was," he said.

Nope!

You're still wrong.

So a story about how no banksters went to prison for the 2008 banking/congress greed is next year? Got it. Keep the sheep grazing on how anti-semetic, racist, misogynist, et al, we all are.

Sorry I wont be reading it. More searching for a bogey man to blame, more PC elitism that segregates us more, more butt hurt that Hilary lost, more nostalgia for a paradigm in decline, just camouflage for elitist thought control.

It was written during the Bush regime and has nothing to do with Clinton.

It's a warning, like Orwell's books.

the 24/7 onslaught of hate towards Trump would never be allowed under Obama; he got a free pass for everything he did.

Really?

I guess some people have their own alternate history on what went down back then. Every day of his presidency the far right and their media allies were on his case.

Bitherism, anyone?

Another trash media article showing that, as usual, the real fascists/racists/violent extremists/bigots are accusing everyone else of exactly what they are guilty of.

Many people have gotten sick of this blatant hypocrisy and thus the electoral backlash of Trump, Brexit and Australia's Scott Morrison.

Under Trump, there is actually more freedom of speech, because under elitist rule, you must tread carefully; the world is to be viewed and crafted according to what they think, and we must all agree...or else. They used fear and other tactics like firing people who disagree.

The evidence of free speech and thought is obvious; the 24/7 onslaught of hate towards Trump would never be allowed under Obama; he got a free pass for everything he did.

The world has changed. The millennials are more woke and holding politicians accountable. Right and left wing paradigms are exposed and transparent now.

Biggest racism gigs today are anti-White brown supremacism and Christophobia in support of Islamic terrorism. Both flourished under Obama. Fortunately Trump trying to stem the tide. This adaptation 180 degrees from the mark, though the book not much better, dreaming about Lindbergh while ignoring actually facism of Roosevelt, who confiscated private property and did away with separation of powers by threatening to pack the Supreme Court.

the Fascist left in Russia in 1917.

Nope. The people revolted against the elite. What came later was tyranny, and needless death and retribution.

Tyranny can ruin the most noble of revolutions.

And now we have a fascist elite in the US.

Harking fondly back to isolationist and anti-Semitic ideologies of the America First movements of the 30s.

Some people just don't learn any lessons from history.

'Goes for daring Trump parallel? Are they kidding? This sounds exactly like extreme liberalism and the modern Democratic party/media cabal.

Little by little, the series depicts the tilt of American society towards fear, racism and violence.

Fear: You don't agree with us and we will come after you, slander you, fire you, etc.

Racism: Against whites

Violence: ANTIFA

Conveniently forgetting that left wingers were the first to be locked up and beaten on the streets, in Nazi Germany.

Yes. Fascists of the left and right saw themselves locked in a life or death struggle since 1917. The Fascist right got the upper hand in Germany in 1933; the Fascist left in Russia in 1917. Both liquidated their rivals when they got the chance. (PS Howard Zinn didn’t devote a chapter to this.)

You read the book by Roth, then?

It exposes statements like yours rather brilliantly.

Don´t know the novel or the film, but in the real world it is leftist politics that lead to antisemitism. In Europe, thanks the mass migration of islamists, you now have massive violence against Jews, and the leftists governments and media are increasingly buying into the islamist narrative about Israel. Talking about an upside down world view.
