That may be an exaggeration but no one is talking about Sound of Freedom and it's almost 200 million dollars in ticket sales. Barbie... what a dung.

Yes, it is an exaggeration.

Barbie $155 million in a weekend. The film you are talking about $100 million, not 200, over 3 weeks.

Ben Shapiro DESTROYS The Barbie Movie For 43 Minutes

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ynU-wVdesr0

This is Ben Shapiro in his most childish cringey toe curling gibberish bellyaching self-flagellation embarrassment.

Did not Ben Shapiro take a breath after just ten minutes to look into a mirror and think I am making a complete fool of myself.

Have the rightwing North American podcast watchers been misinformed again?

This keeps happening.

Ben Shapiro DESTROYS The Barbie Movie For 43 Minutes

I’ve seen this clown before. He’s the fella who had close to a hysterical meltdown on BBC calling a rightwing host a leftist.

Disgraceful. Like a child throwing toys out of a pram.

Do people still take him seriously?

6 ( +10 / -4 )

I will possibly watch Sound of Freedom in Nagoya or Kochi soon.

In all honesty Barbie is a struggle, the genre just isn't my cup of tea.

You know I think Ben Shapiro hates himself for liking the film.

No one gets that angry, a full on huff puff for 43 minutes if they there wasn't a certain enjoyment level reached.

A serious meltdown.

A serious meltdown.

You find some of these rightwing North American podcast hosts aren’t playing with a full deck.

Some may be just winding up morons for the money.

Getting outraged over films and women’s football is relatively harmless, but some people are getting their opinions on matters of science from these people.

Disturbing stuff.

Andrew Neil may be a right wing, long time Murdoch employee but his total evisceration of the clown Shapiro was something to see. Brutal.

I am astonished, that Ben Shapiro, insisting his producer forced him to watch 'Barbie', I am visualizing this producer stapling Shapiros eyelids to his forehead.

Ben Shapiro set about penning reams of notes throughout the screening.

Ben then turning himself, morphing if you will into an angry fur ball.

Over something as unmuscular, inconsequential as Barbie and Ken.

To quote.......“Ben Shapiro is a 40-year-old man who’s so upset over a kids movie about Barbie dolls that he made a 43 minute review”

Ben Shapiro graduated from the University of California, Los Angeles, in 2004, at age 20, with a Bachelor of Arts, summa cum laude, in political science and membership in Phi Beta Kappa. Afterwards, he attended Harvard Law School, graduating in 2007 with a J.D., cum laude.[11]

Yet never thought for a moment reviewing that YouTube rant that a few pages might be stuck together.

I’m a firm believer in the ‘vote with your wallet’ philosophy. If you want to pay for something go ahead, if you want to boycott something, sure.

The numbers will show what is popular and what isn’t.

Barbie is extremely popular.

Barbie... what a dung.

Have you actually seen it or at least a trailer? I’ve seen trailers for all three (films not released here yet). “Oppenheimer” looks compelling, but isn’t a topic I’m particularly interested in. “Barbie” looks surprisingly fun and not what I was expecting. “Sound of Freedom” looks okay (depends how it treats its sensitive subject matter). Will probably wait for rentals if I decide to watch any of them.

I too find the situation to be somewhat peculiar.

If you are a left-wing critic, then "Barbie" is a good movie, and "Sound of Freedom" a bad one.

If you are right-wing, the "Barbie" is a bad movie, and "Sound of Freedom" is a good one.

It wasn't always like this.

Movies such as "Jaws", "Godfather" and "Star Wars" were judged to be good or bad, independent of the critic's political persuasion..

What happened?

9 ( +10 / -1 )

(as well as every Marvel movie this year)

I think a lot of people are just really getting sick of Marvel movies.

5 ( +5 / -0 )

If you are a left-wing critic, then "Barbie" is a good movie, and "Sound of Freedom" a bad one.

This is an obvious example of the right-wing dichotomized mind and typical of the SNS faux-intellectual griftosphere.

Anarcho-communist here and have no interest in either movie.

Oppenheimer on the other hand is a must see.

My worthless fiat currency 2 cents/pence there.

I won't pay to see Sound of Freedom because I don't want to fund QAnon, and I won't pay to see Barbie because the makers submitted to China's wish to show a map with China's 9-dashed dotted line(*).

(*In fact they only used 8-dashed dotted line, perhaps in attempt to evade responsibility - maybe that's why it only grossed 8 million in for the opening weekend in China.)

Have you seen the map? Japan isn't even present.

Ben Shapiro is great.

He dominates everyone who tries to argue with him. Melts the lefties like an ice-cube on a grill.

-9 ( +3 / -12 )

cuddly., am sure reading Ben Shapiro profile he is a skilled debater political commentator,

“Barbie”, the subject matter, I have not viewed the film, I have viewed Bens review, its just so politically inconsequential, immaterial, irrelevant.

I understand your narrative, Rolling Stone, headlines ‘Barbie’ May Be the Most Subversive Blockbuster of the 21st Century.

https://www.rollingstone.com/tv-movies/tv-movie-reviews/barbie-review-margot-robbie-ryan-gosling-greta-gerwig-1234784040/

CNN take...

‘Barbie’ delivers a feminist message dressed up in all the right accessories

https://edition.cnn.com/2023/07/19/entertainment/barbie-review/index.html

Sorry cuddly. ‘Barbie’ if there is a underlining theme, a sophisticated message about feminism and the patriarchy, the subject matter is not remotely something I would take politically seriously.

I certainly would not waste my time ranting a 43 minute review over a film, barbie and Ken, so politically trivial.

As a women, this is the last movie that would provoke a reasoned debate about how to solve the co called problems of sexism and patriarchal control.

I am not going to be throwing my hard earned on Barbie.

The tragedy from my point of view, is the lack of a screening or a release date for ‘Oppenheimer’ in IMAX 70mm

3 ( +3 / -0 )

Barbie and Ken are children's toys, all the accessories marketed to young children.

No political message to he had here.

2 ( +4 / -2 )

Mickey Mouse and Barbie - the far-right's two biggest threats to "Amerika"....

The ridiculous far-right opposition and outrage over a fictional movie based on a child's toy is just another example that MAGA-world survives because "there's one born every minute"...

Keep the rubes distracted and angry with made-up culture wars while the Repubs give $1.9 trillion tax breaks and regulation rollbacks to their fat-cat donors and global elite...

4 ( +8 / -4 )

He dominates everyone who tries to argue with him. Melts the lefties like an ice-cube on a grill.

Unlike you with your lack of facts and logic and warmed over metaphors.

Culture warriors are really having to search far afield to support their grift, like with Barbie or Little Mermaid etc, in the service of their corporate masters who want to distract and divide from actual catastrophic class divisions in America

3 ( +5 / -2 )

Ha ha, there is no way the Barbie movie is "left wing". It is a basically an advertising tool for a mega-corporation's plastic toys. The characters talk about feminism but only to make everyone look good and basically distract from the basic premise of making as much money as possible.

I thought the movie was quite good fun, but the songs in it are weak. I saw it on a dodgy download and had to fast forward through them. More La la land than Grease.

You have a point.

It's almost as if barbie & oppenheimer were deliberately hyped up to overshadow Sound of Freedom.

I wonder why Hollywierd is so against a great movie that actually brings worldwide awareness of child trafficking.

-7 ( +0 / -7 )

A bit sad that barbie grossed more than oppenheimer and what that implies bout society as a whole. Guess marketing trumps all.

-4 ( +0 / -4 )

Now, the corporations and capitalists are called leftists and the blue collar people and laborers are the right wing.

How the world, or just USA, has turned around.

Lol, no it isn’t.

I wonder why Hollywierd is so against a great movie that actually brings worldwide awareness of child trafficking.

If something isn’t as successful as you hoped it isn’t because of frazzledrip and underground pizza parlors.

I wonder if seagal uses the same excuse for being so crappy recently.

Do you think this is a recent trend or has society always been more interested in light entertainment than serious drama?

You know the answer to this already.

The world has room for both, always has.

2 ( +4 / -2 )

I wonder why Hollywierd is so against a great movie that actually brings worldwide awareness of child trafficking.

You know, there are other films that also deal with child trafficking. Have you tried watching or pushing for any of those? Or can it only be "Sound of Freedom" for whatever reason?

4 ( +5 / -1 )

I wonder why Hollywierd is so against a great movie that actually brings worldwide awareness of child trafficking.

We're not. We're against Q-level conspiracy theories about democrats running child-pedophile trafficking rings out of pizza basements in order to get adrenochrine from the children's blood.

Some of us aren't into right-wing extremist fantasy. To each their own, right?

Barbenheimer was very successful, why would that make Hollywood change?

6 ( +6 / -0 )

Barbie had the highest opening weekend for a movie with a female director ever.

This is good news, it means we'll see a lot more female directed Hollywood movies moving forward, which will have the extremely pleasurable side-effect of enraging losers.

Angry crowdfunding for "Sound of Freedom 2: Sound Freer" incoming.

‘Go woke, go broke’

So the hugely successful Barbie film can’t be woke.

Is that right?

5 ( +5 / -0 )

I hope the woke attitude of Hollywood changes as a result.

As a result of one of the highest grossing weekend openings, directed by a woman. Yeah sure, that’ll show ‘em.

The “Barbenheimer” phenomenon may have started out as good-natured competition between two aesthetic opposites, but, as many hoped, both movies benefitted in the end. Internationally, “Barbie” earned $182 million from 69 territories, fueling a $337 million global weekend. “Oppenheimer” did $93.7 million from 78 territories, ranking above “Barbie” in India, for a $174.2 million global total.

Both “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” scored well with critics with 90% and 94% on Rotten Tomatoes, respectively, and audiences who gave both films an A CinemaScore. And social media has been awash with reactions and “takes” all weekend – good, bad, problematic and everywhere in between – the kind of organic, event cinema, watercooler debate that no marketing budget can buy.

Due to synergy, both films exceeded expectations by a lot. One couldn't have done that without the other to play off

This is the first time in US box office history that 2 films debuted together one with $150 million and another $80 million. That's a lot of money spread amongst a lot of people

But it wasn't just an US phenomenon - many other countries are into that phenomenon too. That's how the contributions abroad are greater than half the global totals of $337 million and $174 million respectively

Plus, a lot of girls grow up with Barbie, and this is her first live-action film after all these decades. It even outdid the Super Mario Bros movie opening earlier this year (another one based on a plaything property)

It's almost as if barbie & oppenheimer were deliberately hyped up to overshadow Sound of Freedom.

I wonder why Hollywierd is so against a great movie that actually brings worldwide awareness of child trafficking.

"Barbenheimer" is a creation by people in the internet that grew organically. Hollywood media hype didn't even think of it

Do you think this is a recent trend or has society always been more interested in light entertainment than serious drama?

You know the answer to this already.

The world has room for both, always has.

The world does have room for both, not doubting that. It just re-proves the point of if you want to maximize profits you must market to the mass. Marketing / aesthetic / the fluff is more important than substance.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

I went into Barbie wanting to like it, but it’s just not a good film. The movie flounders after the first 30 minutes (which are great) and doesn’t know what to do with itself. The film lacks any type of nuance as to the message it’s trying to get across and resorts to having a character basically monologue the message of the film to the audience. I’m not saying I disagree with the message, but if you can’t get the message across in a way other than a lecture you’ve failed as a writer / director
