Awards ceremonies are tiresome.  And pretty meaningless in terms of artistic merit.

I don't watch but I do check the lists of winners for ideas of things to watch. A film about Dick Cheney wouldn't have been on my radar, but I'll now know to watch for it.

Glad to see that Rami got the acting award. (Not sure who else was nominated among the leading men). He was brilliant as Freddie.

"Few nominees were considered more of a sure thing than Lady Gaga as best actress in a drama. But Glenn Close pulled off the shocker in that category, too, for her performance in "The Wife,"

Glenn Close was brilliant as Cruella de Vil in 101 and 102 Dalmations.

Serrano,

Check her out in Fatal Attraction. Same role basically

Close said she was thinking of her mother, "who really sublimated herself to my father for her whole life."

Did she actually mean to use that word? If so, what does she mean?

Also:

[Bale] thanked the antichrist.

The Antichrist, or anti-Christ are standard. antichrist is not. Why make a point of not capitalising it? It's a title just as christ is. In fact, if the author is using lower case so as not to elevate Satan (which they did capitalise), they ought not to diss Jay-to-the-Cee by using lower case for Christ.

Just an observation.

And changing the subject:

Ben Wishaw took best supporting actor in a limited series for "A Very English Scandal."

This is an excellent series about the Jeremy Thorpe affair, and I highly recommend it. A shame Hugh Grant wasn't recognised, as he was excellent too.

While I'm here, Michael Douglas does not look at all well, or is it just the lighting? Whereas Bradley Cooper's skin look very finely polished and tight.

Of all the titles mentioned in this article, the one I'd most like to see that I haven't yet is definitely "The Favourite". Olivia Colman is sublime (there, that's how to use the word) in everything she does, be it comedy, drama, fast-paced or slow-moving - she is extremely talented, and personable to boot.

I'll get my coat.

To sublimate is used in a religious sense, meaning that one is consciously dominating his/her feelings.

Ah yes, I have looked up the many uses of the word sublimate. So, within Ms Close's sentence, she means that her mother dominated her own feelings to her father?

Because if that's what she means, it doesn't make sense.

I suspect Ms Close meant to use a verb like subordinate, or even subjugate, but then got over-excited during her speech.

But nothing she does will ever top Peep Show.

Just came back from watching Bohemian Rhapsody. Quite good, and got better towards the end.

Rami Malek deserved it:

I saw The Favourite today and can't understand why Colman has been nominated for awards while fellow lead Rachel Weisz has received none, yet was wonderful in her role. The film itself was a bit meh and took liberties with history far too much.

People still watch these shows? What in heavens sake for?
