Simple, banal stories with high quality CGI by a director with a great track record = box office success. Giving people what they expect. Didn't hurt that there's basically no competition and that it's available in China. Good marketing to choose the right release time. Didn't really like the first one so I'll pass unless my son wants me to watch it with him.

I haven’t seen it. Saw the first one at the cinema years ago and thoroughly enjoyed it. The ‘Dances with Smurfs’ tag was legit but it was still a good time and visually very impressive.
I don’t feel a burning desire to see this one, would rather rewatch The Abyss. But hats off to the man for making another record breaking blockbuster.
Cameron has been making SF movies with an environmental message for decades longer than the “go woke go broke” parrots.

This pandemic has given Hollyweird so much time to come up with some original stories with original plots and not cliched recycled trash and usually-not-needed sequels. But noooooooooooooo.........................
'Avatar' stole every sci-fi, adventure, military, etc. cliche in the book. My BS Detector went off in overload when I saw the first film, had to toss my detector into a dumpster before it blew up.
You know what P.T. Barnum said all those years ago. Go to a carnival/circus/state fair and pay $2 to view a 'snake woman', then you'll know what I mean.
