The original was a box office flop, too. As for people being afraid of long running times; their loss. There's a cut of Blade Runner that Ridley Scott brought to the studio execs back in the day that was something like 3 or 4 hours long! Having seen all the other versions; I'd love to see that one.

Any film with a modicum of intelligence will struggle at the box office, but be watched for decades afterwards. Look at the typical box office hits - plots and characters so dumbed down that a goldfish would get bored.

I watched the movie yesterday and I can say it was actually incredible, an amazing sequel to one of the best movies of all time. The world building and atmosphere was possibly even greater than the original and everything about the production was perfect. I can see how modern audiences might not like these types of movies, where the only things that sell are garbage cartoon superhero sequels, but I really do hope they find the funding to keep going with this series as there is so, so much potential there

The original Blade Runner was not only a box office disappointment - it was not critically acclaimed neither

So at least that's something BR 2049 has

(Or maybe that says something how critical acclaim matters?)

That's the nature of cult classics - appreciated only by a specific niche

Like the original, BR 2049 may not be appreciated until years later to become another cult classic

I was quite skeptical when I heard they were making a Bladerunner sequel, but all of the reviews I have read are making me quite interested in seeing it.

And a 31.5$ million North American weekend is hardly anything to sneeze at. It'll definitely make its budget back and then some, though I guess it won't be a blockbuster money maker like they had been hoping. Which might be a good thing anyway.

Watched the orginal (or at least; the "final cut" last night) and still blown away by it. Even though Deckard comes across as a misogynist in his treatment towards female replicants. One wonders how Dustin Hoffman or Robert Mitchum (noir king) might have done in the role, as some of the producers wanted.

Metropolis (another influence on the film) was a relative flop at the box office, too. And 90 years on is regarded as not just a sci-fi classic but a classic of cinema in its own right. Despite the cheesy ending.

Maybe the box office returns will limit this "franchise" to just two films. Which, as the above poster says, may be a good thing.

Intriguing

The noir sci-fi sequel took first place in 45 markets, led by $8 million in the U.K., similar to “Interstellar” and 15% ahead of “Mad Max: Fury Road.” Russia followed with $4.9 million, topping “Gravity” by 16% and “Mad Max: Fury Road” by 1%.

Australia launched with $3.6 million, beating out “Interstellar” by 9% and “Gravity” by 28%. France also took in $3.6 million, followed by Germany with $3.3 million, Spain with $2.6 million, Italy with $2.5 million, Brazil with $1.8 million and Mexico with $1.6 million.

What does that say about those countries

First of all, "Critic" Reviews don't mean people will actually go SEE ANYthing.

Secondly, the reason it was a Flop in the USA, is likely because enough people (white) aren't being killed by the hand of " Minoritys " & no one running around with signs in the movie that say: "Trump Lives Don't Matter" or the like.

Make a movie with those traits and it's SURE to be a HIT in North America.

Maybe. I guess it's nice to have critics on board.

It made $36.7 million and was still number one at the box office. Hardly a flop.

The rest of your post is unintelligible nonsense.

Good to see the UK leading the way in international ticket sales, pretty huge fan base of the original film in this country.

Not watched the film myself yet, will be doing that this weekend hopefully if I can find the time, glad that their hasn't been too many trailers so I'm still pretty much clueless as to what to expect from this film... which is nice.

I saw the movie this weekend. I thought it was great, both visually, and as a story. It definitely met my expectations as a sequel.
