Spin-offs! They've been around for ages...
MASH the film spawned MASH the series which spawned Trapper John and the lesser known AfterMASH.
Happy Days gave us Mork & Mindy, Joannie Loves Chachie, Lavern & Shirley.
Mary Tyler Moore Show gave us Rhoda, Lou Grant.
Cheers gave us Frasier and er, The Tortellis.
If it's done well; why not? If it's not, it will be cancelled. Personally, I eagerly await the Hodor spin-off...

He's already written multiple spin-off stories.
I wish he'd instead focus on finishing the original story first.
