Talent and grit. In a doll movie. Gritty role for Barbie, eh. Well, the Oscar people do get a lot of things wrong. But for a Barbie, with true grit, I can see their point.

"Nominating Ken but not Barbie is literally the plot of the movie," novelist Brad Meltzer wrote on social media.

An example of life imitating art?

The only explanation for not winning the first prize is oppression.

What "first price" are you talking about? this is not even about the actual award but the nominations.

And the problem is not that they did not win, but that roles that have been widely recognized as worthy of a nomination by the critics were passed over while a relatively less acclaimed Gosling was nominated instead, it simply resonates too much with the story of the movie.

Get over it. While it was a funny movie, it wasn't that good to deserve any rewards.

Every angle of this is utterly pthetic..

The biggest garbage movie of 2023..

So now there's an assumption that woke should win?

Don't worry, though. The way the film industry is bending over backwards to appease the loud, anguished minority, there won't be any non-woke films left to lose.

The Oscars are a meaningless popularity contest. Most of the voters don't even watch enough movies to be able to adeuately assess a field of nominees or winners, and industry politics play a huge part in their decision-making process. This is the truth of every intra-industry awards ceremony. "Fans" need to chill and realize they're angry about something that is utterly devoid of real importance.

So does that mean the Oscar people aren’t woke?

Those who get themselves into a terrible state over woke must be delighted if that’s the case.

love me some "non-woke" films. the minions is my favorite.

how could there be outrage in an event that only 11 people watched?

1 ( +6 / -5 )

Maybe it wasn’t as good as some people thought it would be…; I watched the movie and, imho, the best thing that came out of it was Ryan’s performance and my favorite part was the “I’m just Ken” scene (what a coincidence…)… and a lot of people are saying the same thing—Ryan Gosling is amazing and the I’m just Ken song is incredibly popular…; idk… maybe that means something(?). Congratulations to all the nominees.

So, Margot Robbie was passed over for Best Actress in favor of five other actresses.

Sorry, I don't see the sexism there.

It would be as if Jamie Foxx was passed over for an award in favor of Denzel Washington, and then claiming it was due to racism.

As for Gerwig being passed over, one of the Best Director nominees -- Justine Triet -- is also a woman.

So, I don't see the sexism there either.

And Heaven forbid it should actually be considered that maybe, just maybe, the ones who were nominated for Best Director simply did a better job on their films than Gerwig on hers.

Are we allowed to even consider that as a possibility, or no?

At the end of the day, of course, being "enraged" about this is over the top. The textbook definition of a first-world problem.

Nothing to complain about here. The judges got it right. Looks like Oppenheimer will get the last laugh.

"Nominating Ken but not Barbie is literally the plot of the movie," novelist Brad Meltzer wrote on social media.

Sorry, but it isn't. And your biases are showing.

The plot of the movie is Ken getting benefits for no reason other than being male, while Barbie struggling against a stacked system simply for being female.

The Oscars are an attempt to reward to best performers, based on their performance - only. If a male actor performs better than a female actor, then he should be rewarded, and she shouldn't. That's feminism - the equality of men and women.

If Mr. Meltzer wants the actors to receive rewards based on who's a man and who's a woman, then he's not a feminist. He's a female-supremecist.

This is a good point. The woke and anti-woke are very delicate and get upset easily, but on balance, I’d say they anti-woke are the most easily triggered.

Margot Robbie is a very talented actress , deserving of recognition and awards, but a movie about a doll is not really worthy of any Oscars, no matter how many immature adolescents are infatuated by the color pink.

1 ( +8 / -7 )

Why did they need a female actress for Barbie anyway?

This is hilarious! You got triggered by invisible outrage over outrage.

Riiiiiiight! So people are ticked off cause a couple of women didn't get nominated for a PINK BARBIE MOVIE, rather than jumping for joy at the first-ever Native American woman to be nominated for an Oscar whose performance was awesome. The French movie Anatomy of a Fall, about a woman in court and directed by a woman was also excellent. This really, really shouldn't even be here for us to read. Just another negative moaning, complaining article. and another clickbait whining, complaining Barbie article. The judges got this right. Let celebrate those women.

Feols like the Oscars are more cerebral.

Stop it. You're making too much sense.

What's side-splittingly funny is the belief that Barbie is under represented when it got 8 nominations.

Seems they got it right! Clearly Ken was more deserving of nomination than Barbie!!

Then trying to equate them is well just STUPID!!!

Sad to see Gosling being a super simp at all this, or perhaps he is just trying to deflect potential drama that might come his way given Barbie couldnt make the cut!!!

Ken was after all the real star of the flick......so maybe the category he was nominated should be changed LOL!!!

I don’t recognise these women.

-8 ( +0 / -8 )

I really don't care what fans think of such a snub, especially with such a movie.

What? A native American woman was nominated for Best Actress, while beautiful Margot Robbie with her blonde hair and blue eyes, wasn't? This is the BARBIE movie. You know the doll that was used in those child experiments to see which color skin they thought was beautiful. Unbelievable!

Decades of hard work, brainwashing and oppression down the drain. Barbie, I mean Margot Robbie, was supposed to win.

Thank you Abe234! You were spot on!
