40 fans chosen for chartered flight with Tom Cruise

Forty lucky fans, chosen by lottery from about 3,000 applicants, will travel aboard a chartered aircraft with Tom Cruise on Thursday. Cruise, who is in Japan to promote his new movie "Valkyrie," will attend the Japan premiere in Tokyo on Wednesday night.

On Thursday, the Sky Cruise flight will leave Haneda for Osaka. During the flight, Cruise, 46, his wife Katie Holmes, and daughter Suri, will interact with fans and pose for photos.

During his last visit to Japan in 2006 to promote "Mission: Impossible - III," Cruise joined 250 fans on a specially chartered bullet train from Tokyo to Osaka.

Cruise and his family arrived at Narita on Sunday night and were flown into Tokyo aboard a helicopter with the name of "Valkyrie" painted on it.

I want his money! He can keep the helicpter ride, don't want it.

Bet they can't wait for the "You handsome. You like sushi?" and other breathtaking conversation on the flight

M:I3 was way better than M:I2.

The flight gives new meaning to fan-meeting. One day, Suri may have enough material to write a digital book about being among strangers so often.

Well hes taking a bit of time to at least meet a few them. Not bad for a "mega celebrity." Tom seems to chat to his fans a fair bit when hes out and about.

Wonder how happy these fans would be to learn this film opened in Soutrh Korea on January 22nd?

I have to say, it's a pretty good stunt, but would have been even better if he hadn't had to pretend japanese fans are some kind of special favourite, but don't get to see the film until it's been released absolutely everywhere else.

Oh, shucks! I missed the lottery!

Wottock Hunt - Japanese fans are special as they get to see the film at a special time (just don't mention that this time is after everyone else).

He may genuinely like the Japanese and appreciate them as a people. Some people do.

Bebert is right -- It's been noted that Cruise is sincerely appreciative of the people of Japan and is very respectful of Japan's culture. Problem is, though, he tends to make an appearance at these "lucky fan" events and bows out very quickly. Catch'em while you can.

Actually, you are mistaken. Cruise doesn't bow out quickly. He goes out of his way to spend a long time with his fans, for example, the chartered jet and bullet train rides. It is the other stars who show up at red carpet events, sign a few autographs and then disappear back to the Ritz-Carlton.

Cruise is a genuinely nice guy, despite what his detractors say. Yesterday, for example, he and his family showed up at the park and chatted with Japanese moms and their kids (through an interpreter, of course). Suri had a ball running around with the Japanese children.

If I were there I would probably berate him for portraying Claus Schenk Graf von Stauffenberg against the wishes of his family.

Have not seen the movie yet, but I doubt Hollywood has done history any more justice than it usually does.

I would love to hear Tom's excuses.

The film actually wasn't that bad, surprisingly. I agree, I think Cruise is a sincerely nice guy... the only complaint I have about the guy is the whole scientology thing.

Moderator: Tom Cruise's religion is not relevant to this discussion.

I am afraid that I too will like the film despite myself.

I must admit, despite his occasional lapses of common sense (we all have them - the only difference is we don't have paparazzi following us everywhere to report them), he seems to be one of the more genuinely "nice" celebrities out there. Now time for me to go and watch Top Gun for the umpteenth time...

I think Tom Cruise is a very handsome man, his facial features are very attractive and on top of this, his bosy is very well maintained, strong muscles, great shape. Abotu his character - he could be the nicest guy but I do not like how he had treated his ex wives. I man does not leave his woman...i think such men should not be trusted.

"...will interact with fans".

So, Tom Cruise is like a computer game? I thought we talk to people, stuff like that, but I guess Tom must be a robot of some kind.

@likeitis - He's got plenty of reasons for taking the role! 60 million of them! (his average paycheck per movie...) ;D

Smartacus,

I base my comment on a recent on a first hand account: last year 20+ people won a contest to watch a movie premier with Cruise, in their own city. He flew into town, shook hands and was very gracious, then within 20 minutes of the film starting he snuck out the back door and was gone. With that I am not wrong, but I do agree that he is a very nice man and he does what he can, with his limited time, to meet his fans.

i think its funny, that he tried to take shinkansen with fans from Tokyo to Osaka, probably not realizing it took 4 hours. Now i think he learned his lesson and opted for a much shorter flight. haw haw, like it all hurts him to "interact" with common folk. I hope that dude get stuck on the plane longer than the shinkansen takes.

You are wonderful, Tom, though I have no respect for men who break the heart of their ex-wife or girlfriend. I find them cruel and lacking consideration for the pain of others. Otherwise you can show how big your heart is but I do not believe you. Men like you are the worst.
