Gosh, what a stunning, beguiling movie all these years laters. Novak, Stewart, the Saul Bass titles, Bernard Hermann score and of course, Hitchcock.

They really don't make 'em like they used to.

Director Hitchcock's most enduring movie while the stock of his personal reputation most likely will continue to fall.

There are people in my office who have never seen a Hitchcock movie or even heard of him. I wonder if today's movie-goers, under 30 years of age, for example, would even like "Vertigo." Nowadays, young people are bombarded with Marvel movies, remakes, endless sequels. I don't think they would appreciate a Hitchcock film with no sex, gratuitous violence or swearing. I recently watched "Vertigo" and "North by Northwest" again after about 15 years. Loved them.

I tell people I like Vertigo just to sound cool and pretentious. The same when I excoriate Marvel films.

And I use the phrase "They really don't make 'em like they used to" to sound like an old geezer who just doesn't get the artistry of Transformers 3.

I'd give them more credit than that. The skill and craftmanship of Hitchcock tends to shine through, regardless of how old his films may appear to some.

As fir gratuitous sex/violence/swearing, it doesn't bother me. When it's integral to the essence of films like Goodfellas, Do the Right Thing or The General, it works.

Or indeed, Psycho which still sends shivers down my spine!
