Hollywood actresses wearing black to remind everyone they all knew what was going on for decades while keeping silent so as not to hurt their careers.

I just don't get it.

But then again, they are actors. They know better than the rest of us..

Virtue Signalling from the Hollywood Community again, the "look the other way" to further their careers attitude is a joke.

A lot of bad things happen to non-Japanese in Japan - even those with permanent residency or citizenship. The only way to deal with it is to recognize it and ignore it. No amount of protest will effect change - it will only restrict your own progress. Just deal with it.

Women in America (and in most - all? - other countries) face a similar fate.

One would think that non-Japanese residents of Japan would recognize this.

I am so very much going to remember those words and this day they were uttered.

I just don't get it.

The only people that care about Hollywood is-“Hollywood.”

These kind of award ceremonies for actors always have me reaching for something to be sick in.

Self-congratulatory, ego-massaging and balloon-headed garbage from celebs largely in love with themselves. It’s like following B-list, reality TV star Trump on Twitter.

Accepting her award, McDormand granted she was befuddled at the identities of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, but gave them credit. "At least they managed to elect a female president," she said.

That's an absurd correlation. Obliquely inferring that Hillary Clinton lost because she is a woman, while ignoring the predatory behavior of her husband.

With a red carpet dyed black by actresses dressed in a color-coordinated statement, the Golden Globes were transformed into an A-list expression of female empowerment in the post-Harvey Weinstein era.

Cancelling/not attending the event would have been a much stronger statement i.e 'from now on we Hollywood women will always choose self-respect over career and name/shame the Harvey Weinsteins of this world."

Oh so Oprah doesn’t know Weinstein now?

I don’t know how it is that Hollywood creates their own scandal and then uses it to preach to US?

It always amazes me how many people just seethe with fury any time any Hollywood actor makes it into the news. Like, obviously these award shows don't mean something to everyone and it makes sense that if you don't care you don't read the story. But to just hate so much that you can't even let the story pass without commenting... How do the Golden Globes even affect you if you aren't interested in them?

This is just silly. Hollywood is a bunch of people, just like on this board. There is no central governing body that 'creates scandals', there are just people in it who do. And other people who preach about it. Same as on this board.

Cue the predictable disparaging comments.

Why can't actors speak out against abuse? Because they are privileged? If so, who can then? Me, my colleagues, my sister in law, the woman that serves you in the shop? Who is qualified to complain.

it is very telling that whenever anyone speaks out about sexual abuse and harassment there are huge numbers of individuals or organisations that immediately start to discredit or disparage their claims due to perceived privilege, lack of privilege, age, appearance, job, race, income etc. it doesn't matter who you are, if you speak up someone will use something about you personally as an excuse to dismiss anything you say.

Did not watch - the show was on the same time as an Italian crime show in Italian which, though understood mostly through sub titles, was more interesting.

who gives a rip about hollywood or Opra? All that money she is still a whale

Why can't actors speak out against abuse?

No one said they couldn't. But if you're going to suddenly pontificate about sexual abuse after having ignored it for years to further your career, you can expect to be called out on it.

No one said they couldn't.

Plenty of people have, here and elsewhere.

examples of where anyone said they should be legally obligated to keep quiet about politics please.

No one said legal until you did. Any other goalposts you'd like to shift?

Not free to do something is de facto “illegal”

thats common sense.

Not free to do something is de facto “illegal”

No. Illegal means agains the law. There are plenty of other obligations that have nothing to do with the law.
