Interesting fact: “Shogun” was filmed entirely in British Columbia, Canada.

We enjoyed the series and look forward to the next season.

Finally got to watch Episode One last week. Names and places have been changed, as in the novel, making it somewhat confusing, and I can't hear a word of what most of them say, but it's fairly evocative of those times.

The original Shogun series was something that captivated the attention of the whole family in my childhood home.

The new one was similar. I watched it with my parents, who were nostalgic about the first one.

Could not get the kids interested yet, but that’s probably because they are not from the TV generation.

Shogun - The Woke Version. No thanks.

Deserved it. Shogun (2024) is miles ahead of Shogun (1980).

Congrats to all - definitely on my watch list.

Shogun - The Woke Version. No thanks.

The New York Times wrote this big long piece about how racist this TV show because the series is about Japan, but focuses on a white male.

That was a bit puzzling, seeing as it's based on a book all about a white male in Japan.

The novel is from 1975 and the old adaptation is from 1980, long before I was born, so I didn't hear about it until recently when this new version came out—

interesting story, high quality TV show, great actors and visually stunning—it's good to see Japan represented like this;

Hiroyuki Sanada was also a producer, one of the reasons feudal Japan was portrayed so beautifully and realistically; —

“ I wanted to introduce our culture to the world correctly. That was my dream. Everything—language and movement are an important part of our culture. “

(In another interview—)” I checked the first draft [in English] to see whether there’s anything culturally off. Once the draft was translated into Japanese and examined by history experts for authenticity, a scriptwriter created the dialogue. Then, I changed them to suit each character, which was then translated back into English and brushed up before being approved as the final version. “

Sanada could tell the difference when it came to having his voice heard especially in discussions about how Japan is portrayed. "Before, just as an actor, it was so hard to correct every detail of our culture," Sanada shared. In the past, he had to consider factors like the right timing to speak up, and with whom. "And don't break their pride," Sanada added. But that was not the case when filming Shögun. "Everyone listened to me," he explained. The actor realized just how important having a title like "producer" was. "It was so effective."

Note: The only thing I found unrealistic was the replacement of the Portuguese language with the English language, but other than that, the whole thing is incredibly realistic.

( Shogun won the most Emmys ever for a single season of a television series with 14 at the Creative Arts Emmy Awards on Sunday night.

Presenters were saying “Shogun” all night at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles on the second night of the two-night Creative Arts Emmys, where awards are handed out that don’t quite make the main Primetime Emmys ceremony. It broke the record of 13 set by the 2008 limited series “John Adams” before even reaching the Sept. 15 main Emmys ceremony, when it can pad its record with up to five more. )

So cool. :)

Congratulations to everyone involved in Shogun. Can’t wait for the second season.

Pfft. It's literally 44 years behind.

Agreed, but it would have meant that almost the entire series wouldn't have had any English spoken. Probably too much of a commercial risk.

I quite enjoyed it, although it tailed off and the ending was a bit rushed. Needed a bit more action; a bar room brawl or a car chase. I wouldn't ever watch it again, but then again very little telly warrants a second look.

Tadanobu Asano was brilliant, as was Fumi Nikaido.

I watched and enjoyed the 1980 version, which had a huge impact on interest in Japan back then. We can see how much more sophisticated the scripts, direction, camera work, special effects, acting, etc., have become, and also of course appreciate that today's audiences take an interest in the real William Adam's adventures from 1600.

I like to re-watch Japan themes shows. Re-watched Tokyo Vice multiple times. Yes I know it is also about another white male but at least it is a bit entertaining.

Shogun was more like European film festival movie that is not bad but on the boring side. Perhaps not shooting the tv show in japan might have taken away the flavor that we needed.

White males make the best movies.

Confirmation that the overall level of TV programming is garbage. Shogun was fine. I will watch season 2 but I'm not going to schedule my life around it. Please give me more Fuji. She got bundled off to a nunnery but that doesn't mean she has to stay there.

Also, do consider shooting season 2 in Japan.

As much as I know your comment intended to just troll, I would like to explain perhaps someone else might get a glimpse of what we mean when we say that.

If I am going to consume some content about Japan I would rather see it through a Japanese perspective. if that is not possible then at least from perspective of someone I can emphasize with.

The world changed. The consumer base changed. Their appreciation changed. And it will keep evolving. This might be hard to swallow for some people but it is what it is.

Callbsout- actually it’s demonstrably true. But also funny because it comes off as a troll.

The TV show was so good because everything was almost 100% authentic.

The dialogs, the acting, the atmosphere, the stage, the clothes, everything.

One negative thing about it, was that the last 2 episodes seemed to be very rushed, something like season 8 of Game Of Thrones.
