Unfortunately Mr. Petty was taken off life support. R.I.P. Tom. You sure knew how to put on a great show!!

He lived an amazing life. Without details, I would never second guess a decision NOT to be placed on life support for very long. He had a DNR. That usually means someone has a serious illness.

If you haven't been clear with your family, best to have the discussion now so your wishes are followed.

RIP Tom. 66 is no age, at all.

Free Fallin forever!! RIP, TP!!

I'm glad Petty finally found happiness with his second wife. The abuse he suffered as a child was horrendous, and ultimately led to the heroin addiction which finally killed him. RIP

" and ultimately led to the heroin addiction which finally killed him"

Although T.P. by admission did have a heroin problem in the 1990's he died from a heart attack. Come on Lizz

And then there is addiction to wildly speculating about celebrity private lives. Not lethal but deadly dull.

Boy, I'll miss his music (and the Traveling Wilburys); but a heart attack. Gosh oh mighty. Rest with the superstars, Petty.

Just for the record, the cause of death according to Petty's manager was cardiac arrest, not a heart attack (although that could have been a precipitating factor). And yes most cases of cardiac arrest occur in people who have coronary artery disease. Particles in the drug build up around the arteries, around the heart and the heart muscle itself. Obviously it isn't the only or even most significant consequence of long term use but it can be a factor in sudden heart failure and death.

RIP Tom. You were the real thing, your music loves on brother.

Lizz, how 'bout letting a music legend RIP instead of examining his ear wax, bellybutton lint, and fingernail clippings. The guy was retirement age--a time when people pass--so we can skip the medical minutia.

But 66 is no time to die unless there are mitigating factors.

Long-term drug use cause the damage in the past it was just a time bomb waiting to go off

Petty himself talked about how "downright stupid" it was to ever get involved with heroin in the first place and would be the first to want the drug conversation to continue after he was gone, regardless of the cause.

But 66 is no time to die unless there are mitigating factors.

A much loved family member died when she was that age from a massive stroke. Apart from a glass of Guinness at xmas; she wasn't exactly overdoing things.

Tom Petty fought to keep his album prices down

Among the most famous examples: In 1981, Petty's new label was proposing a new pricing scheme for "superstar" artists that would charge $1 more for their new albums — $9.98 instead of $8.98.

Petty, who was about to release Hard Promises (most famous for "The Waiting") wouldn't hear of it, and at one point, according to reports, threatened to rename the album Eight Ninety Eight.

"A lot of our fans have been with us for a long time, and I think they trust us," the then-29-year-old singer, songwriter, and guitarist said according to the New York Times. "MCA [Records] has done a great job selling our records, but they couldn't see the reality of what it's like on the street - they couldn't see that raising the album's price wouldn't be fair."

He insisted he bore no ill will toward MCA in particular, but was concerned that the decision was an ominous sign of an emerging industry-wide trend. Petty said at the time:

"Every other company would like to push record prices right on up there. I'm not usually as concerned with record company business as you might think; I like to devote my time and energy to being a musician. But sometimes there's a communications breakdown and, when that happens, you just have to stand up for yourself."

As he also said at the time, "If we don't take a stand, one of these days records are going to be $20."

Just remembered my favorite Tom Petty song. Off of Hard Promises (1981) mentioned above..

"A Woman in Love (It's Not Me)" (writers: Petty, Mike Campbell)
