Funny how some people think that anyone not white is somehow inferior. It's film making and acting. give your racism a rest...it's getting tired.

The awards are voted on by Members of the Academy-doesn't that mean the awards are voted on by academy peers as in Actors Directors Producers so on & so on? WHAT'S The BEEF?

The 'Hollywood industry' that is doing the 'bashing' is the actors and actresses. They aren't the ones who do the casting for movies for the most part. So the two groups you are equating, are not the same group.

But they are the same. It is the ones behind the scenes in the industry that decide what actors to back. Why is it that if an actor declares to be a conservative, all of a sudden they don't get the big roles that they used to and get ostracized by the rest of the actors. These same behind the scenes people are the ones who the big Dem candidates fly out to Hollywood for to attend fundraisers. Sure some A list actor/actress will be the "host" but whom are they hosting? The big money studio and entertainment execs who will donate as much as they can to their political candidates who express their views. When was the last time you have heard of a big Hollywood donation event for a conservative in the news?

Actors/actresses for the most part know that for them to keep getting the jobs, they will go along. Notice some of the response to Will and Jada Smith's boycott. Some of the Black blogs and media are saying not so fast, what about the rest of the ones who are not in their position to make such calls and need to get chances to make films and finance movies and haven't won an Oscar to be able to be in the forefront to make such a call. There are some who do not go along with this plan.

Funny how it is this very same "Hollywood industry" that is bashing America as being too racist, all the GOP and other non-Democratic party affiliations as being racist or homophobic, and yet when the curtain is pulled back look what we see? A closed off group of similar people who are dictating what we should like and dislike.

Their composition should be similar to US demographics so that it's representative of the movie-watching audience.

@ lostrune2: It will not be like that simply because the proportion of demographics in the industry is made up of white males and does not reflect the general population. Don't think it s a good move to have "diversity" amount of awards. If a movie is good, then it should be able to stand on it's own. The only thing I would recommend is that those movies that may be produced or have minority actors in them are given the chance to be voted on, and if they cut it then they should be nominated. If not, and they are truly bad pieces of work, then they lose.

Edojin, ever think that you may have been seeing inferior winners since the beginning? Think an almost all white NBA, MLB or NFL would make those leagues superior? How about an almost all Japanese makuuchi in sumo? Give those a thought and see what you think.

None of it really matters. People in an industry patting each other on the back. Why in the world does the public even care?

According to a 2012 study by the Los Angeles Times, nearly 94 percent of the Academy voters are white and most of them are male.

That's way more than their portion of the US population demographics.

Their composition should be similar to US demographics so that it's representative of the movie-watching audience.

A rule they're considering is, instead of voter for life, if an Academy voter has been out of the industry for a decade, that person would lose the privilege of voting. In effect, the voting pool becomes those still working/recently left the industry and thus more representative of the current industry environment, and also weed out the old-timers who are decades-retired thus making the voting pool younger.

Does this mean that we will be seeing inferior winners in the near future? There are so many problems in this kind of racial prejudice on one particular side that murky-talented candidates will become the norm.

"...and the winner for best director is........Spike Lee!"

...but then there will be something on top of people's minds as to why he won. Or person of a minority background really, no matter how talented. This is what this "diversity row" leads to, unfortunately. Not that it has no merit, but you know how people are like. It's going to be similar to Affirmative Action. It kind of is, really.
