I just saw him in the new Hunger Games. I wonder how they will continue his character.

A family man with all that success and he's shooting up heroin in the bathroom. I don't get it.

I am very sorry to hear about this, it's a terrible shame. Such a young man. Addiction and mental instability can and will take over anyone, no matter how well-loved, wealthy, successful or famous they may be. Hoffman will be much missed.

'Tis a shame... A fine actor, but I respect him a whole lot less knowing how he died. All the same, a loss to the acting community.

Quite judgemental. He went from drug and alcohol addiction in his early twenties to spending over two decades sober while doing some amazing work, that will still be enjoyed after we're all gone, and leaving his family financially secure for life. I can respect that.

A shame.

He was becoming one of my favorite actors. He was a reliable and an awesome performer in so many movies.

Charlie's War was one of his best characters and performances. Watch it if you have a chance.

His latest role in the Hunger Games was very subdued, but I suppose he was building up the character for the third movie, which will need a lot of creativity to replace him while keeping in line with the books.

It says on the net that he finished his scenes for Mockinjay part I and he was about to start for Mockinjay part II I haven't seen yet Catching fire but I know he was a great actor, I liked him in Along came Polly, scent of a woman and Hannibal

That was some awesome work for sure. For me, it was his (relatively) minor role in The Talented Mr Ripley that I will always remember. Still gives me shivers when I think of Freddy Miles. Matt Damon and Jude Law in their prime, and PSH stole every scene he had in that movie imo. RIP.

Philip Seymour Hoffman portrayal of addiction in 'Owning Mahowny' (2003) held some deep awareness of the helplessness and suffering of addicts.

Mr. Hoffman's sensitivity was evident in every role and at some level in what appears a tragedy for everyone. Hoffman's gift was he made us feel his characters' conflicts. How he could have been so alone in the end is incomprehensible.

Somehow, even in his honesty about addiction, he had insufficient help that could have saved his life. How could that happen? Just incomprehensible and so needless.

Really, really sad to see an artist of that level go away so young. He was amazing and I had looked forward to more from him. He really resonated with the feeling of the viewer. At least this viewer.

I don't get ppl saying they don't respect how he died. Are those who said that all planning heroic and morally laudable deaths somehow?? Addiction is powerful and tragic. Presumably there was something (personal pain) behind the addiction as well.

I thought Daniel Day Lewis was "the finest character actor of his generation". Media really do overcook everything.
