When you're 84, these are the kinds of things that start happening, no matter how healthy you are.

Hanoi Jane......

It was a foolish and useless publicity stunt that backfired on her. But she was right. It was foolish and useless war.

Barbarella! Best movie ever.

It was the best for Fonda in various states of undress. Not complaining. She was gorgeous. It's a great party film to play with no sound as background entertainment.

bringing up her traitorous past in which she posed on the seat of an anti aircraft gunned to kill American pilots -as disgusting as it was- is not appropriate at this time.

She has cancer and likely has little time left.

I didn't bring it up.

Very innappropriate.

I'm sure she's doing everything humanly possible to make her own carbon footprint as small as possible....

Get well soon (I doubt she’s reading the Japan Today comment feed on this story, who knows though?)

@MilesTeg which its why its so bizarre that you'd think I was referring to you.

I don't see how it's bizarre. You quoted me and made a response. It was ambiguous as to which post you were referring to. Why not respond directly to the post that brought it up in the first place?

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

right. I was referring to your first post which referenced her actions in North Vietnam. Thought it was another poster.

In any case when death or illness is announced, its in extremely poor taste to immediately pontificate whether or not the person was "good" or "bad".

Poor taste.

Your very first sentence in this thread was to call her ‘traitorous’ and ‘disgusting’.

I was obviously addressing a former poster's comments. You make an obvious attempt not to mention my further comments condemning bringing up Fonda's past at all.

I was referring to your first comment. The one where you brought up Fonda’s ‘traitorous’ ‘disgusting’ past.

The comment you made before you condemned anyone except yourself for bringing up Fonda’s past.

Thats such an interesting take since your comment immediately after mine was,

and I quote:

Hmm. In full agreement with me one moment, triggered the next.

Provocative...

That moviw is Z-grade dumb fun. Yeah, the nude scenes...... but she probably would've loved to forget that film and be recognized for her more 'serious' work.

And yet she gets reminded all the time of it because of the band Duran Duran, who I grew up with and love very much. And they're getting inducted into the Rock'n'Roll Hall of Fame this year! This month. You could call that karma if she did actually do anything wrong.

As for her being 'traitorous', Donald Trump is far worse and is a far worse traitor than 'Hanoi' Jane Fonda could've ever been.

She never really was known for serious work in Hollywood and was not even an A-class actor. She has been a legend in the B-class genre for doing Barbarella which was for the most part the high point of her career.

Well, that's not even remotely close or what the history books say, that stunt that she pulled in Nam, she never recovered from that and she made a ton of B-movies but that is as far as her career would go. Feel bad for the woman to have to go through this difficult phase in her life, best luck to her and her fight with this disease, but having said that, she made her bed, she dove into politics at a very sensitive time during a war and it rubbed millions of Americans the wrong way.

She won 2 Oscars and was nominated 7 times. Very well known. A-class stuff. Her very numerous awards form other organizations in the industry are very impressive too.

This is not B-Movie stuff.

You can argue about her politics but let’s have some respect for facts.

'Barbarella' is far from her career high point. I remember her from the film '9 to 5' which got acclaim in the early 80s but I thought was lame. But she did a lot of fitness videos and in some of them she revealed to have the anatomy of a snake! I'm talking some strange stretching out exercises that most people can't do.

However, her Vietnam past one way or another has still dogged her to this day. There are so many rumors and I'm too young to remember it. Nonetheless, that photo shoot of her which she posed on the seat of an anti-aircraft gunned to kill American pilots whatever her intent, was turned into VC propaganda and it was DUMB. And even today she gets hateful flak about it, strangely from the armchair generals who never served but rah-rah wars all the time.

@Starpunk

Klute and Coming Home are very good films and she received Oscars for her performances. I’m not a big movie watcher but I’ve seen them and enjoyed them. She was talented as well as stunningly beautiful.

I know you were a member of the US armed forces and take your views on her Vietnam past seriously on this.

Fonda went on to establish herself as one of the most acclaimed actresses of her generation, winning the Academy Award for Best Actress twice for Klute (1971), and Coming Home (1978). She has scored five other Oscar nominations in her career, four of them for best actress.

I am a veteran, but I also have no opinion about Jane's views on her Vietnam past and there's some others like me who are the same way. OK, so say she did oppose the Vietnam War. Cool. It was wasteful, unwinnable for many reasons and was more than a little stupid. Some wars are unavoidable but most of the ones after the Cold War (and even after WW2) were. They were not necessary, and Americans have every right to oppose one. I served in the later Cold War years, and I took part in an anti-Desert Storm rally in 1991. I didn't want a war with Iraq, we didn't need it. And it led to further unrest, instability and even more wars in the Middle East.

I defended our Constitution, and it says that peaceful demonstrations are protected. That means opposing a war. There's always these lunkheads who claim that nobody has that right but we DO. And that includes Jane Fonda. Going over to NV might not have been the best idea however. Whatever her motive or intent was, posing at that anti-aircraft gat or even talking with them was just fuel for the VC propaganda machine. They used her. If her intentions were peaceful and good, she did it the wrong way because it blew up in her face. I was just 2, 3, 4 years old at that time so I can't truly have an opinion on it. I was around or even there to witness it. But I DO think that if Jane Fonda committed a treasonous act, she would've been arrested upon return and her passport would've been confiscated. As far as I know, she never renounced her US citizenship, nor did she collaborate with the VC to actually kill American GIs. That's why I (and many other vets) really don't have a solid opinion of her on that. And she did apologize for any trouble she may or may not have caused back in the late 80s.

OTOH, there have been some true bonafide actual traitors. Real ones. Every 36 blue moons an American GI has defected across the DMZ into North Korea. I remember the Walker family scandal; it happened when I was in the Navy. They are traitors and scum. And I remember this woman pilot who defected to Iran a few years ago too. Then there's that now Caitlin person who served several years for giving Top Secret information to an American media source. But (s)he's not a traitor, that person had the clearance but violated the 'need to know' clause and that is still a crime. But not a treasonous one.
