Actress Kazuyo Matsui talks about husband’s affair; asks foreign media for support in YouTube video

By Alexandra Hongo

In a country where family affairs are for the most part kept private, Japanese actress Kazuyo Matsui’s recently posted YouTube video, where her husband, actor Eiichiro Funakoshi’s deepest secrets are revealed, comes as a surprise.

Titled “The Truth from Kazuyo Japan,” the video posted on YouTube last Friday shows Matsui, 60, a popular Japanese actress and TV personality, wearing a black T-shirt and no make-up, revealing secret after secret about her husband, including his extramarital affair, his medical condition, and even his “fake hair.”

“My husband and I have been married for 17 years,” Matsui says in the opening of the video. “However, I have found that my husband is having an affair with my best friend who lived in Hawaii,” she continues with a raised voice. “She is married and even has a daughter!”

Matsui further reveals that Funakoshi has Type-2 diabetes “and also he has fake hair.”

“Therefore I’ve known that he could not have sex. However, I found out that he had been taking a 100-mg Viagra,” she continues, pronouncing each word strongly, accompanied by repetitive insisting gestures. “Using Viagra he had been having sex with my best friend.”

In the video, Matsui also accuses her husband of being “after (her) money” together with his lover, and for attempting to damage her reputation by leaking stories about her in Japanese tabloid magazines with the cooperation of his production agency.

“I have cried for days, and even considered ending my life,” Matsui says in the video, adding that after turning 60 this year, she had decided to “fight against the dark shadows and (her) husband.” The actress further says that she is fighting against the Japanese media, which she considers distrustful, a reason that led her to take her “battle” to social media sites and appeal to foreign audiences, asking for support.

Matsui and Funakoshi, who got married in 2001 despite strong opposition from Funakoshi’s father, also an actor, had been for a long time considered one of the most ideal married couples in the Japanese show business world. Their perfect family image, however, was destroyed in late June this year, when Matsui began posting partially senseless articles on her blog, saying that she was being followed and was on the run to protect her privacy. In early July, she posted an over 10-minute-long video on YouTube in Japanese, revealing Funakoshi’s affair and medical condition, going as far as to show his medical records and medicines, as well as a partially revealing photo of Funakoshi’s presumed lover (Matsui’s best friend). The video went viral in the Japanese media, with many expressing their concerns over Matsui’s mental health.

Though Funakoshi had kept a relative distance from the media since the outbreak of the scandal, news that he has filed for a divorce settlement was recently announced by the Japanese media. Following Matsui’s latest video, his agency, HoriPro Inc, revealed on July 21 that they have taken legal measures against Matsui for defamation and business obstruction over the series of web accusations she has posted over the past few weeks against Funakoshi and the agency, Japanese media reported.

“SOS, SOS from Tokyo, Japan,” Matsui ends the video, sparing a moment to add that “Japan is a wonderful country,” that everyone should visit.

Matsui’s acting career was at its peak in the 1980s and early 1990s, during which time she starred in nine movies and 12 dramas. Following her marriage to Funakoshi, she focused on expanding a home cleaning and cooking business, including publishing a number of books on the topics.

Funakoshi is a veteran actor and TV presenter with over 100 movie and drama appearances.

Not defending her husband's actions but she really needs mental assistance. Airing out her dirty laundry on SNS is really the lowest any person can go. She is embarrassing herself more than damaging her husband's rep. After viewing the video, I can clearly understand his actions, if true. Not making light of it (at my age of close to 60) but I really think she needs psychiatric help for her beginning stages of menopause.

This video is because of all the bitterness Kazuyo-san has. Hope Kazuyo-san overcomes her grief and bitterness and moves on for a better life. There are rats who wouldn't think twice before having an affair with best friends or family of their spouse (don't know if it is true in her Kazuyo-san's case). Please be strong and think positively.

“I have cried for days, and even considered ending my life,” Matsui says in the video,

How hurt she must be at this betrayal. Equally saddening are the sneers, the casual sexism and willingness to turn it all back on her.

Sad story. Ugly and telling comments.

While this guy is scum, she went about it the wrong way, fake hair, viagra and heath issues have nothing to do with an affair and it is defamation that will bite her in the butt during the divorce

7 ( +8 / -1 )

While I feel sorry for the situation she is in, that doesn't change my comment on her. When I first saw her on TV (she initially released some videos in Japanese before these English ones), my wife and I both agreed that her complaint is valid (no one likes getting cheated on), but that she comes across as crazy. If you can understand Japanese, and you listen to those original videos, she's definitely lost the plot. I know that if I was with someone like that, I'd definitely file for divorce, and if I recall correctly, her husband already tried last year.

4 ( +5 / -1 )

I can't quite grasp the link between her "hesbands" fake hair and his impotence that she seems to imply.

4 ( +4 / -0 )

Quite similar to 'revenge porn' actually.

Was told that Matsui's so called best friend had actually denied cheating with Matsui's hubby and that a lawsuit had subsequently been filed (in Hawaii I guess). Didn't know Matsui before so don't know if she was neurotic before being cheating on/thinking she was being cheated on or if she's always been a bit loopy/eccentric.

Her vid is quite sad actually; if he's really cheated on her then I can sort of understand her 'cheating revenge' mindset although I reckon this type of vid only shows how humiliated/vulnerable/hurt you are. The same vid in a measured, dispassionate and calm manner would have been 10 times better. Being irrational/hysterical was imo counter productive.

Ive got no sympathy for any fool that has an affair while still in a relationship, if your a man or woman and not happy in a relationship , leave! this boat hoping from one relationship to the next without actually getting your feet wet in the waters of being single just shows how pathetic many are. too afraid and insecure to be alone for any period of time.

3 ( +4 / -1 )

Every family has it's own affairs, no exception to a celebrity lady in Japan. So, why did she have to expose their private life? That's shame her way to show that in SNS!

3 ( +3 / -0 )

While her husband obviously has faults of his own, she has lost the plot, and will probably lose out more from this too.

She publicly shamed him, and kinda shamed herself too.

These kind of public details need not be unleashed to everyone and anyone.

If she's about to go through a divorce, this video could really hurt her...in the very least it makes her look unstable. And clearly he could have sex, he just couldn't do it with you anymore.

If you can understand Japanese, and you listen to those original videos, she's definitely lost the plot. I know that if I was with someone like that, I'd definitely file for divorce, and if I recall correctly, her husband already tried last year.

If that is true, you can't really blame him for "cheating."

Plus, considering she is obviously psychologically not well, the affair could potentially all be in her mind.

3 ( +3 / -0 )

Just divorce. Move on with your life (what's left of it). I know she's probably of the typical 10 year old mindset), but come on - making YouTube videos filled with comedic fodder about your separated husband? Is it going to bring him closer to you, have him apologizing for all his misdeeds, etc? No. The marriage is over. Accept it, file the divorce papers, go find yourself a younger guy who's into semi-famous/famous, semi-wealthy/wealthy, older ladies. Let the good times roll.

2 ( +6 / -4 )

Hmm, although he sounds like a major douche, I think he does have grounds for a defamation case here. Her showing his medical records by itself is grossly illegal I presume

2 ( +3 / -1 )

Love ❤️Japan , I've been to Japan and love the people. I've seen that actress in a drama , she is excellent. It's hard getting old , and harder that your husband is cheating on you and what's worst that it's with your best friend !i understand her going public ! Good for her to go on YouTube ! Power to you Girl ! Be strong ! You have no reason to be sad !

2 ( +7 / -5 )

Why would the husband be stuck in this marriage? He could have just left (hasn't he anyway?).

TV news (not NHK) were reporting so much about this last week and yesterday, it is becoming sensational. Japan Today has just picked up the story, but, for better or for worse, is not reporting on what some health care experts are saying.

2 ( +3 / -1 )

She definitely knows that infidelity/adultery is culture in japan.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

Mental!!!!! This is disgusting. You don't go and air your dirty laundry like this. First of all, she is doing this because she thinks that foreigners might understand her better, because the Japanese don't. She thought her videos would be a huge success and people all over the country would encourage and support her, which for obvious reasons, it does not. To be honest, nobody really cares. Yes, he is schmuck. Maybe he cheated, but this is not the way to go about it. You don't talk about your husband's fake hair and erectile dysfunction meds. You don't throw his privacy out the window like that just because he fooled around on you. I hope I never hear this nutcase talk about her privacy being invaded or a need for it. She has absolutely no right. She went from victim to criminal in my mind.

As for him having an affair with her friend in Hawaii, if I am not mistaken, she has a restraining order against her in Hawaii because of well..... well, stuff like this. Her husband is extremely angry with this crazy woman as well. From what I hear it is not a thing, just something that she has in her head.

She needs medication and counseling so badly. The Japanese didn't like it, and running to the foreign media is just making her look worse to more people. Truly pathetic. I hope he sues her pants off.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

Give me a break. This has nothing to do with sexism. It has everything to do with the wacky way she is behaving. She is embarrassing herself, and her soon-to-be-ex. She is dishing out very private and sensitive information about him without his approval. She deserves whatever is coming because she is going way too far. If it were a guy talking about his wife's inability to sexually perform with him, but taking meds so that she could with other men, and that she wears a wig, I would say it is wrong. Two wrongs do not make a right.

Also, as for her accusing him of having sex with her best friend in Hawaii, that does not appear true. Like I posted earlier, a restraining order has been placed against her in Hawaii. The so-called best friend's husband is rightfully angry a lawsuit pending against her. They sent people to investigate the claims but they came back with nothing. We really don't even know if the viagra part is true or not.

As I said before, he might be a schmuck. He might have fooled around. But that proof has yet to be seen. What does seem to be true is that she has a very bad temper, over emotions and need some serious counseling. She is angry that the Japanese public does not like her videos and is trying to reach out to the foreign media because she can't accept that what the real problem is, is her posting those abnormal, over-dramatic videos in which she tells us about her husband's private business. But from what I gather about from reports about her, she is a nutcase. She actually threw his family's butsudan out on to his apartment entrance. Pure evil.

Frankly, I have to admit, if that were my wife, I sure would not be sleeping with her either. And it has nothing to do with HOW she looks. I would also rather prefer sleeping under a bridge than going to home that face. That face, does not mean HOW she looks. It means how crazy her face is and what is coming out of her mouth. Just pure psychotic.

@thunderbird 2 - Empathy? How can you say, we lack empathy? You show a surprising lack of empathy for this man who just had his private life exposed to the whole country, without any proof of it being true or not. You just assume that we she says is true. Is that because she is a woman and so are you? Would that not be biased? We really don't even know if he fooled around. is a diabetic, taking viagra or anything else. We do know what SHE did. As far as I can see, she is the only one who I can definitively say is, or has done anything wrong at all.

There are better ways to do this.

I'd think the husband could get the video taken down rather quickly.

He probably can, but better to leave it up. The videos make the woman look like she's batsh*t crazy. Give a person enough rope...

A semi celebrity psychiatrist is getting flak on twitter for suggesting she drop by his clinic for a checkup.

he mentioned symptoms of bipolar or schizophrenia in a tweet and "Team Matsui" (her aides who are assisting her video production and hideaway) trolled his account to the point it was temporarily shut down.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

She was deeply hurt. She feels that she's the only wife in this world that was betrayed by husband and a bestfriend. I guess she doesn't have a true friend, or a family that she can talk with about her sad sad marital experience...

Kazuyo! just cry until the pain goes away.

forgive them... continue with your life, there's more for you... Calm down yourself, for your sake.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

What she's done is illegal in violation of privacy and anti-defamation laws.

That's a stretch. It's only defamation if it is untrue, and he can prove it is. She has managed to come up with documentary proof, like his Viagra prescriptions, his air tickets and hotel bills in Hawaii, not to mention exchanges between him and his mistress.

As for violation of privacy, she is his wife, and has some legal freedom in regards to her husband's affairs.

She's a nut, and her husband is a sleeze, a match made in hell.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

As for violation of privacy, she is his wife, and has some legal freedom in regards to her husband's affairs.

As his spouse she certainly has the right to her husband's personal affairs, naturally including information that would be covered laws protecting personal privacy. However, she absolutely does NOT have the right to share that privacy information with the public, which she has done now on multiple occasions. As I and others have said, she has sabotaged her case in the divorce proceedings that I'm sure will follow.

One thing this article doesn't mention, is that before she created the Japanese youtube videos which preceded this English video, she had taken her allegations to one of the weekly rags, to get them to publish it. They spent a bunch of time researching her claims, going so far as to send someone to Hawaii to confirm, and they didn't have confidence in her claims after all this that would allow them to publish her allegations. They didn't come out and say she was lying per se, but one still go that feeling from hearing their press release on the matter.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

I agree that there is rampant sexism in this thread towards the poor husband. I can't believe people support this nutcase's actions - regardless of what her husband did. She's sixty years old not a child.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

AMEN Mike L!!!!

1 ( +2 / -1 )

A quick thought - wouldn't a video such as this go against YouTube's terms of service? Whether a stranger, friend or family member, I'd assume you can't just post a video on YouTube personally attacking someone for 4-6 minutes, and kinda threatening to fight even harder, etc. I'd think the husband could get the video taken down rather quickly.

0 ( +2 / -2 )

0 ( +2 / -2 )

Not very dignified.

0 ( +2 / -2 )

wouldn't a video such as this go against YouTube's terms of service?

That was my first thought as well, but I don't believe it does. Ultimately, she is only giving a subjective account of something negative that happened to her. Thousands of youtubers do this everyday without violating the terms of service. Notice that she is careful to never name the husband, the friend, or the production company. Unless you have prior knowledge of who these people are or make an effort to connect the dots by searching beyond the video, you will have no idea who she is talking about. I certainly don't.

That said, it could very well amount to defamation depending on the circumstances.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

IMO she deserves everything anyone is saying about her on this thread.

Are you a male? Would you mention a person's looks, her mental state, her age and so on if it was a man who posted the video?

Her premise that any English speaking person outside of Japan would care one iota about her or her problems is laughable.

Why not? Betrayal and sadness are universal.

This is another case of the lads rounding on a woman because she's dared to be weak and emotional.

0 ( +4 / -4 )

Her premise that any English speaking person outside of Japan would care one iota about her or her problems is laughable

She said the best friend that her husband lives with is married with kids in Hawaii. Perhaps this was aimed at her best friend or best friend's husband who could very well be Americans.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

Personally I think anyone who cheats on a spouse is fair game. Her pond scum husband has clearly hurt her deeply, as has the betrayal she feels that he slept with her best friend.

I don't think she's lost the plot... other than burying an axe in his head I think this is a catharsis for her... allowing her to get it out of her system.

I find all of the sexist remarks aimed at her to be rather telling: I'm wondering if the lack of empathy has something to with some of the posters having also dipped their toes in the waters of extra-marital affairs...

0 ( +2 / -2 )

I watched the video. This has the potential to be bigger than PPAP.

I know I shouldn't laugh, but this is comedy gold.

0 ( +3 / -3 )

If I had to return home to that face, I would rather be homeless under the bridge,,,

As I said, rampant sexism and a shocking lack of empathy...

0 ( +5 / -5 )

She put this video out in public, so she can reap the whirlwind.

0 ( +2 / -2 )

Such is the pc world we live in now, its verboten to question whether she is actually telling the truth and is simply off her rocker. You go girl!

0 ( +1 / -1 )

You go girl? Seriously? So, its okay for her to reveal extremely private things about him without his approval?

Are you assuming that everything she is true?

If the roles were reversed and HE reveled extremely private things about her, (wether true or not, you have no idea) would you encourage him as well?

This woman has a history or erratic behavior. Hence, restraining order in Hawaii against her by the very woman that she accuses of sleeping with her husband .

0 ( +0 / -0 )

If she can prove in court or whatever means that the infidelity took place such as the conspiracy for the money, she's a victim, filled with anger. If not, then she's phyco. The thing is, it really shouldn't matter much in this video how not correct is to vent the dirty laundry. SHe's 60! she knows that already! Anyone who has spent time in Japan KNOWS for a fact that if a public man cheats, the scandal goes on news but he still has his businesses and sponsors. If a woman cheats, she's the scum of the earth and loses everything, specially in job related stuff. So, if you want revenge and you know your entire society, culture and even law won't help, what it takes to be heard? Answer: whatever it takes. Posting his medical conditions is really a joke (if anyone takes it as offense, that's your specific position, as mine is to consider you a joke) so, make his reputation burn girl!! How i would love to be there and support you, Just because this sound so different from what a respectable woman is supose to do. If she wants revenge, why wouldn't she be able to have it? She's been allegedly damage literaly so. Go ahead.

-1 ( +3 / -4 )

Toasted Heretic

What she's done is illegal in violation of privacy and anti-defamation laws. This will come back to hurt her if/when she goes to divorce court. IMO she deserves everything anyone is saying about her on this thread.

Her premise that any English speaking person outside of Japan would care one iota about her or her problems is laughable.

-2 ( +2 / -4 )

I didn't watch the video (can't explain well, but it feels wrong to click...). I had a friend who had been a wonderful person until she turned about 60 YO. Suddenly, she became verbally abusive, imagining things, threatening us on the phone, became quite irrational overall. Even her face expression changed completely--she actuaLoy looked quite like Ms. Matsui in the picture above the title. Some people made fun of my friend, called her crazy, psycho, schizophrenic (which is also an illness, so...). She became aggressive and almost nobody could approach her. After a year or so, she committed suicide. She was very sick with bipolar disorder (https://www.nimh.nih.gov/health/topics/bipolar-disorder/index.shtml). If you look it up or check the link I added, you'll see how similar Ms. Matsui's symptoms are to that. I don't know how bad her words are in the video, but just like we don't make fun of aids or cancer patients, it would be nice to show more compassion to people who probably have some mental or emotional disorders and suffer a lot.

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

She said the best friend that her husband lives with is married with kids in Hawaii. Perhaps this was aimed at her best friend or best friend's husband who could very well be Americans.

No, the video is going on about an SOS from Japan, and how she needs help. It's definitely not targeted at the person who cheated.

-3 ( +1 / -4 )

Watching the video I know understand what drove him to get a girlfriend. Should have gotten a divorce first!

-7 ( +4 / -11 )

Oh he has fake hair, that makes me hate him.

Hey just eat some chocolate, get a cat, do some knitting etc. like all the other over 50 women.
