Aya Sugimoto recounts suicide attempt in tell-all book

Actress Aya Sugimoto, 42, revealed this week that she tried to commit suicide when she was 15. Sugimoto tells all in her autobiography, "Rebel Life," which was released last week.

The book recounts her suicide attempt, as well as her marriage and divorce and the foundation of her own company. Sugimoto said: “I didn't intend to write as much as I did. It took a lot of courage. Writing the book helped me to see my own weaknesses and I feel like a weight has been lifted off my shoulders.”

She gave no further details on the suicide attempt, except to say, "You'll have to read the book."

“I didn’t intend to write as much as I did. It took a lot of courage..."

If that is an accurate translation the sexiest woman in Japan just lost some hot points with me.

Why has she lost points with you (as if that matters)? It can't be easy for a public figure to write in a book about her suicide attempt. That does take courage.

Don't you think it's weird for people to say, "it took a lot of courage," when they're referring to themselves? It seems that someone would normally say, "I was scared to write about it," or "I was nervous about revealing that information." It just comes off as very self centered and too much like an NBA or NFL sports player. I always thought "courage" was a word we use to attribute to others, so the way you used it is what I would expect. And yes that does take courage, but to say it about yourself? No, it's self-centered.

what does hotness have to do with talking about themselves Stars are all self-centered, that is how they become stars

agree with smartacus

I'm glad her suicide attempt failed.

There is nothing self centered about loving yourself or praising yourself

Right on!

“I didn’t intend to write as much as I did. It took a lot of courage.

Perhaps she was just expressing what others may have said about her ordeal? If more Japanese could be as courageous and be honest and open with their feeling, maybe fewer would jump from bridges, buildings and in front of trains. Suicide happens when and individual has lost all hope and withdraws from social contact. If this book can inspire hope and save a life beyond learned shoganai fatalism… I think that’s pretty sexy.

@smartacus - It says nothing about her hotness. Hot is hot. You're right, but in terms of the type I'd actually like to spend time with it means a lot.

Yes, there is. She's exhibiting Paris Hilton behavior with that line. The world could do with a lot less self love or self praise.

after she became a real woman at age 15 she wanted to end for to much excitement

Aya Sugimoto self-centered?!?! Oh perish the thought :)

Attempt or gesture? Attempts are usually successful, gestures are a "cry for help".

sensei258 - you posted a similar comment elsewhere. i understand your point but you are factually incorrect. sure, jumping off a building would be more successful but slashing your wrists is usually a bona fide attempt to end suffering. fortunately or unfortunately it is not a very successful way to end your life.

Gosh, I have NO IDEA WHO THIS AYA SUGIMOTO is, but I wish her luck on her new book and that she feels better about life and never tries suicide again.

Does the books contain any photo's of her? Not so interested in the text :)

Wow! Never heard about this until her tell all book. Makes you wonder if it was an actual attempt. I jumped out of a tree as a kid, but I was not trying to off myself. I wonder if this story is being stretched a little for book sales.

If this is a tell-all book, would there be a possible show-all book?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

noirgaijin, that took a lot of courage for you to write. ;)

Use google, there's no shortage of "show-all"....

Let me see now. The first time anyone has heard about her suicide attempt, which just happens to coincide with the release of her new book, written by an ex-porno actress. What is Japan Today doing printing absolute rubbish such as this ??

Well, at least this means that it must be cool, so more people will probably try to commit suicide in emulation. I wonder if she thought about that when she wrote her book?

northlondon, it's called the ENTERTAINMENT section. Steer away from it next time.

bicultural, it certainly is just the entertainment section of some internet news site. But it doesn't excuse the promotional bandwagon of some over-aged porno actress releasing some story about a suicide attempt that we can only read about if we stump up cash for her book. There is such a thing as responsible journalism, certainly when these porno actors are presented as mainstream celebrities to impressionable young girls.

She is not a "porno actress." Do you even know how she entered the Japanese entertainment business? She was a singer. Perhaps you are referring to the fact that she has appeared in a movie with erotic scenes.

Ah,ha,ha,ha ! You kill me.

You mean the very same movie (Flower and Snake) where she just happened to appear in masochistic sex acts ? And the same author of that well-known novel about singing, 'Orgasm Life' ?

I guess you already bought her new book..

Technically, Hana to hebi was a pink movie, so not quite porn. Maybe like cinemax porn, but it was pretty freaking graphic.

Is the book in English?

She's 42, and recounts a suicide attempt when she was fifteen. And of her own efforts, she said "it took a lot of courage."

Sounds to me like somebody is begging for attention.
