You pulled the trigger, while the firearm wasn’t pointed in a “Safe” Direction…just WHO’S FAULT do you think it IS ?

Just the adult son or daughter of any well-experienced professional does not equate to having the adequate knowledge & sufficient experience to do the same job. Hannah Gutierrez-Reed should never have been in that position of responsibility:

“The rookie armorer in charge of weapons when Alec Baldwin accidentally shot dead his cinematographer on the set of his film “Rust” said on a recent podcast that the “best part” of her job is proving “how safe” guns are.

Hannah Gutierrez Reed, a 24-year-old former model, told the “Voices of the West” podcast last month about landing the “pretty sweet gig” with her first movie as head armorer in August.

“I think the best part about my job is just showing people who are normally kind of freaked out by guns how safe they can be and how they’re not really problematic unless put in the wrong hands,” Reed said.

She said her dad, well-known Hollywood armorer Thell Reed, gave her some direction growing up — but she “figured” out most of the job requirements on “my own.”

The more I read, the more I know it wasn't the fault of Baldwin,

If he was just an actor, I would agree. But he is also a producer of this film. That can mean a lot of different things, but it opens the possibility that he was responsible for the budget and hiring decisions that led to inadequate staffing, resulting in this accident. I am sure this will be clarified in the inevitable lawsuits.

Involuntary Manslaughter, Reckless Endangerment at the very least.

"I didn't know the gun was loaded" doesn't exempt anyone from responsibility ever.

5 ( +7 / -2 )

It was an accident. There shouldn't have been any real bullets on the set and the gun shouldn't have been loaded at all.

You are arguing that 1) the real bullets on the set got there "accidently" and 2) the weapon was loaded "accidently."

You can't "accidently" transport rounds unless you willingly disregard every known safety precaution involving firearms. And, if you don't "know" the safety precautions... you shouldn't be handling any weapons at all until you do. And you can't "accidently" load a firearm. There is simply no way to do so.

Look at it this way... even if everyone else on that set screwed up, and it appears a whole lot of them did, this would not have happened if the person handling the weapon had just practiced the standard firearms safety protocols. And, the first one of those is to personally check the condition of a firearm when you initially take possession of it. A blank looks like a blank. And squibs should be colorized to differentiate from live.

There are times when using a firearm with real bullets in a movie makes sense and can be safe.

No... and no. It doesn't make sense for real bullets to ever be used during filming.... and as long as people refuse to follow normal weapon handling responsibilities, or defend those who don't, then it will never be "safe".

Bungle,

the “armourer” herself admitted that she learned very little about guns from father, and is on record before the Baldwin incident as saying she was not really competent to do the job. The three accidental discharges of live ammunition on set in the days before the fatal shooting should have alerted any sane person that something was seriously wrong. What on earth was Baldwin thinking ?

3 ( +4 / -1 )

when practicing with a gun you should never have your finger on the trigger and its not necessary.

there shouldn't be real bullets in a prop gun and why was the crew not wearing safety gear ?

The whole thing is multiple negligence and Baldwin is guilty of firing the weapon and should take responsibility .

The facts still don't add up

I agree. Here we have a man with no experience who historically talked down to gun owners has non-union workers with No idea on how to properly deal with a firearm on a set. I feel bad for the guy, but the insults and assaults coming his way, that's his own fault. If he would have had proper union and experienced gun experts on the set, this could have been avoided and that woman would still be alive.

Yes. Unions are good. Every business should be unionised.

It depends. That is not always necessarily true. But with Baldwin and his lack of experience and also his over-confidence and gigantic ego it would have been better to put this project in the hands of people that could override his aggressive nature and put the breaks on anything they felt were questionable conducts.

Hollywood should practice what they preach. NO more movies depicting any kind of weapons or police. if the left wants to continue to complain and blame stop making money by doing the exact opposite in your movies. That won't happen though because there is no real talent any longer, no one can write a decent story only shoot em up, and comic book based garbage

I have marbleized blueing gun parts with boiling arsenic, have carved brilliant designs into guns, and before doing the art end, we look in the chambers even before dismantling the guns to work on them. We put them back together, load them and fire them for fun. 50 to 100 shells each, then dismantle again, work on them and put back into a unit, passing them around double checking to make sure not loaded.

Baldwin was not a gun person. He would not know. I think someone deliberately set up one gun hot on purpose.

Ok, you might think so, for some they’re good but to thousands in the US it doesn’t.

Unions are good for everyone, actually.

Oh my. This is wrong on so many levels.

It's right on every level, actually.

Now the pathetic gun lovers are going to whine..

There's only one person whining. Actually constantly whining..

To cut to the quick, the two most important questions are, who loaded he prop gun with real bullets? Why? Baldwin's role as the shooter is only that of a bit-player in this uncanny whodunnit and whydunnit.

Some people like them, I’m not for them, I worked under them years ago, it depends on the job and field, some are decent, some have their benefits, some are atrocious and should abolished or restructured.

Yes. Unions are good. Every business should be unionised.

Oh my. This is wrong on so many levels.

Many people are screwed by the unions they were forced to join. I know people in a union of all Engineers. The union negotiates salary increases. They negotiated 1.5% every 18 months. Basically, being a member of that union meant you were actually losing money every year you worked there since inflation was 4% at the time.

Unions are bad for people who outperform their peers too.

I'm not anti-union. I'm against keeping underperforming people in a shop indefinitely, since that forces all the other people to pick up their slack. Everyone has bad days or even months where they need to extra help. I've had an injury, but still needed to work and my peers picked up my slack for those 12 weeks as I healed from surgery. If I was permanently disabled, I wouldn't have been able to do the job and should have moved on to different work.

I've worked in very small companies without unions. A union doesn't make any sense in those places. Got to see the full compensation for everyone at the company. It was enlightening - and seemed extremely fair. I didn't expect that. I'd been screwed in compensation in a prior job, but the new boss at the prior job was trying to correct the poor compensation for his team. For a few years, I saw 15% raises. Never would have seen those in a union.

Often, a union protects incompetent workers from being fired and prevents merit raises. Unions never mention that, of course.

I'm sorry? I haven't mentioned Dune, nor is it in the article, so far as I can see.

I haven't seen Dune. I've heard it's very good, and I look forward to watching it.

The more I read, the more I know it wasn't the fault of Baldwin, no matter how much I may dislike his politics, I can still enjoy his role playing.

There are times when using a firearm with real bullets in a movie makes sense and can be safe. Come to Georgia to make films like that if the good people of California aren't interested. Lots of huge films are made in Georgia - especially super-hero films and TV shows.
