LMAO.
maybeperhapsyes
Why?
Enough already with this nonsense.
Blacklabel
Filing under things that are really not necessary.
Strangerland
When ever has TV been made up only of things that are necessary?
Toasted Heretic
Odd how the telly incarnations are only catching up. LGBT heroes and villains have been gracing comic books for the last 30 or so years.
Of course, the people who find this terrifying and nonsensical probably have zero interest in the genre to begin with. But it's another opportunity for them to voice their, er, concerns...
maybeperhapsyes
@toasted
Surprised at you dude. Wrong on both accounts. I am not terrified and I do have an interest in the genre.
Though, not a concern as such...just rather peeved about her modern incarnation.
She was originally conceived as a "love interest" for Batman. So where does the lesbian angle come into it? Other than to appease the LGBT society. Once again, our childhood heroes being ripped apart for the sake of........what exactly?
How does being a lesbian make any difference? Why mention it at all?
goldorak
How about Wonder Woman & the Amazons, always thought they were gay (and was absolutely fine with that even as a kid/teen)?
Toasted Heretic
Not sure how anyone's childhood heroes are being ripped apart. Captain America was regularly seen bashing toothy Japanese stereotypes during the Pacific War. Such crude representations were eventually seen as redundant and dropped. Cap is still going strong.
As for Batwoman, like Batgirl and indeed Batman and Robin, she's had different incarnations. The world didn't fall apart on those occasions, either.
Does her sexuality have any bearing on the stories? Did it before? We'll have to wait and see. As for mentioning it - it's publicity, that's all.
Lol. Dude.

Just because she is Batman's love interest doesn't mean she can't be a lesbian... Girls aren't made straight by guys liking them.
Also, it's not so much to appease the LGBT community as to bring some diversity to comic books, beyond different superpowers and colorful suits. There are a lot of LGBT people in the world, and a lot of LGBT comic fans, it's only right that those people are represented in the medium.
If it doesn't make a difference then why are you so bothered about it? I'm sure your childhood can survive if you really like her that much. The only difference will be that she looks at girls instead of guys. And hopefully, if there's no male love interest, then maybe we can avoid any embarrassing damsel in distress scenes undermining the heroine lead.

No one bats a eye at seeing Girls (or even grown Women in Asia) walking down the street holding hands, though seeing Men do so, may cause a raised eyebrow (even nowadays). Unless we see a bed scene with involving two women, or a heavy snogging (kissing) scene - I doubt there will be much fuss about this. But put make Batman gay, then matters would I imagine be different..
FizzBit
They should make her Catholic too, just make sure the kids are indoctrinated one way or the other.
Toasted Heretic
There's enough sectarianism in the real world without having to bring it into Doctor Who, thanks all the same.
Toasted Heretic
Ach, getting my ent. stories mixed up. Batwoman, not Doctor Who.
But the point still stands - there's no need for bigotry.
If you don't like LGBT people or people of varying religions, the issue lies with you.

It happened in the comics first, so I can't really be mad about the TV show following suit.
My only problem is that they kept the original 1950's character and just changed her to be gay. Why not have new woman take over the mantle of Batwoman, who happens to be gay? It would have been too easy, it happens all the time with masked superheroes. That way, the people who are attached to the original characters get to keep them and the people who want to see more representation are satisfied.
I think there's a little too much of 'Hey look, this character is (fill in the blank) now!' and I can understand how it would bother some fans.
theFritzX
Not good enough and it reeks of faux 'inclusiveness/diversity'.
I will not be satisfied until batMAN transitions into BatWOMAN!
Midnight Sun Tribe
A funny twist, seeing as how she was created to prove that Batman and Robin were not gay...
Cochise
theFritzX, right on!
The time is now ripe for batman and robin to come out as gay and in a gay relationship. Batman can do the kylie jenner thing and transition to the gender he feels most comfortable as - simutaneously becoming batwoman!
Strangerland
Goddamnit. How dare comics try to normalize something that is pretty normal, catching themselves up with the times. God damn them to hell. TO HELL.
Toasted Heretic
I wouldn't be surprised if DC already has a female Batman. There have been plenty of alternate world versions and "what if" storylines over the years.
Don't forget, Robin was a girl in Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Returns, back in '86.
Yes, that's right. Right winger Frank Miller was pretty much ahead of the game over 30 years ago.
Am heartened to see so many fans of comic books here. Who'd a thunk it?

Even better : Wonder Tran!

How about Neocon Man, or Dogwhistle Man?
Andrew Crisp
Just a guess it will be a short lived series - people watch these shows for escapism and entertainment not political correctness
theFritzX
And of course the new batwoman simply must be played by a lesbian actress - a repeat of the scarlett johannson debacle wouldnt do at all!
