I am very glad to hear about this, and hope they can find more lost episodes!

Meanwhile, Japanese readers across the country ask themselves, "What's Doctor Who?"

I don't know who it was that voted my last comment down, but it's a sad but true fact - hardly anyone in Japan knows what Doctor Who is. The BBC were foolish enough to sell the broadcasting rights to NHK, who clearly had no idea what to do with it or any intention of publicising it properly, so while seasons 1-3 of the new series are available online the wonderful news about the discovery of 1960s episodes just isn't going to mean anything to a lot of people in Japan, even with this being the 50th anniversary year.

But before you get tapes you will need to pay a small fee to see the deal through.

Wonderful. Now if the BBC could just find the stones to put the second and third season of Monkey Dust on DVD.
