All great artists live mentally on the fringe - not always the healthiest place to be, but that's where the creative action is.

I’m not sure about this. If we look at music, I don’t think the likes of Lennon, McCartney and Dylan were mentally on the fringe. Dylan and McCartney in particular come across as very normal. I know plenty of eccentric people who don’t create anything.

Anyway, all the best to Brian Wilson. He is an incredible talent and from what I hear, a very nice fella.

I was going to see him perform later this month and I was stoked. This sucks.

Get well, Brian. You've won bigger battles before - here's to a speedy recovery, rock'n'roll champion!

Brian Wilson been fighting anxiety demon most his life. An interesting story so look it up. He was a shut in for many years and an unethical doctor pushed constant drugs on him. Along with great crative talent comes the ability to creat your own fears. Get well and follow your passions as hopefully you don't need the touring money by now.

In pop music there are few musical geniuses. Wilson is one. The things he once heard in his head that "couldn't be done" (listen to "Good Vibrations" through good speakers) were comparable to symphonic music.

Imagine what he could have done if things had been different with his mental health and his father.

As commanteer said, the mental health issues might have been key to that period of his music. It's likely that the heavy drug use that started at that time was what caused the breakdown or made it worse.

Brian, I hope you can be in the moment and find restfulness in the here and now. You are the most delicate of word smiths. You are loved.

It could be argued that he might never have created Pet Sounds if he were mentally healthy. All great artists live mentally on the fringe - not always the healthiest place to be, but that's where the creative action is. Relatively few well-adjusted people are driven to create great art. Some artists become well-adjusted after they find success, and the quality of their output drops dramatically.

I hope he recovers. I wonder what went wrong with the most recent surgery? Did the anaesthetic affect him?

I wish him well.

Brian is a gentleman and a very kind man. Best wishes for his recovery.

Seconded. He created Pet Sounds when he was 23. It's one of the greatest albums ever and he was only 23! Imagine what he could have done if things had been different with his mental health and his father.

Snuck into a concert he held in Kumamoto years ago and went backstage to meet him. He said, "Next time we're in town, just email me, and I'll give you tickets." Brian is a gentleman and a very kind man. Best wishes for his recovery.
