Yeh right.

Hypocritical methinks, were it a principled stand rather than self promotion stunt she would have refused it. Marlon Brando did it better.

As a family loving provider new father, I will never get it how terms lile "woman", "patriarchy" etc. can get a negative meaning. These wackos are talking about the modern Western civilization for gods sake.

Who else watched just yesterday that show with the war zone journalist Hiroshi Sukagawa? (yes, j-tv can have shows that actually make sense once a year). That's what a real oppressive society looks like.

People from all over the world flee from oppression to the US.

"Patriarchal society".... says someone who can't even imagine what is to have your 50min. lunch sitting on a pile of dusty concrete. Give me a break.

What exactly is Cate on about here?

wimen in the arts do great work. Let’s not have award shows?

OK.

Absolute codswallop Kate.

Pretty hypocritical (and self-destructive to one's prospects) to bite the hand that feeds WHILE accepting an award.

Say "Thank you" and save one's criticisms for a different medium or just be silent.

Some of these acceptance speeches were just off-the-wall nuts.

This was one of them.

As if patriarchal societies were inherently wrong.

And as if she had not full blown benefited from it gleefully and willfully and perhaps wildly.

Every comment so far here is spot on.

What is she complaining about? Competitions? Don't take part on them then. Even babies compete with each other, patriarchy has nothing to do with it.

So if a woman has a competitive spirit she is complicit of the patriarchy now?

And women in the arts have always shared a pretty similar common ground, Mozart's sister was equally trained and promoted by her father as a musical prodigy, women artistry is recognized, praised and held dearly throughout history and all over different cultures.

What a self promoting goading act. Shameless.

I have always derided these award shows. Not mainly or only for what they are, but because they literally force people to watch them(in the sense that is all over the media and weak-minded people who mostly have their TV sets on all day, almost cannot choose not to watch it), watch this exotic, extravagant pedantic artists get all fancy to receive an award we don't actually care if they receive or not!! 2 to 3 to 4 hours of more of it!

And the most disgusting part is that then they give this grand speeches as if they were our leaders, our representatives, our heroes.... these people who AS individual persons could be farther from exemplary or good.

If they are going to have awards ceremony, do it quietly, do not broadcast it and spear us the speeches!!

I remember someone compared making sausages to making films. If you saw what went into a sausage, you wouldn’t eat it. I got the point after watching a film award show.

Put the footy on.

What is she saying? I accept this award for myself but am upset by the patriarchal pyramid that ultimately is Hollywood thru the years which has led to this award and thus I must say every woman who does something should be recognized? The logic is baffling, at best.

It's a red herring to equate empowerment of Hollywood of men to an award she is voted for and accepts. If she disagrees with the process, don't accept the award she seems to believe is tainted. What a hypocritical person.

Woke buzzwords that should cause you to make your excuses and politely leave: The patriarchy, privilege, mansplain, broppriate, manspread, whitesplain, Gammon, BoPo, Cis, Cultural Appropriation, Gaslight, Misogyny/misogynist (a buzzword but never acceptable nonetheless), intersectionality, etc. Notice any bias?

How'd the "patriarchal pyramid" play into her getting the award?

4 ( +6 / -2 )

Well....don't accept it then! Yes....there are many people doing a good job, but this is about picking a standout from within that group. If you don't want to take part, cool.....don't accept it. Why is it patriarchal again? Is it the whole awards style or is it the make up of the people who choose who wins? I don't know how these things work so don't see any patriarchal angle here if it's a straight up vote by industry men and women. Maybe to make it less patriarchal, they can do away with the separate awards for men and women and just have 1 award.....that way the best person wins......

Cis and Cultural Appropriation are my 2 pet peeves.......as soon as someone says "cis"...I discount whatever they are away to say instantly. And cultural appropriation?! GTF outta here with that nonsense. Culture is MEANT to be shared.........I do like gammon though.....it sooo invokes an accurate image of those type of people :D

Yet you can be sure she primped and posed on the red carpet, playing the game all the way. The game continued with her acceptance speech.
