It was an amazing movie for sure.

I was surprised at several of the subtle and not so subtle digs at North Korea.

By far the best movie to come out of Asia since "Last Train to Busan."

I am a big fan of Asian movies; not all of them, only the superb ones. That said, haven't seen "Parasite" yet. What occurs to me is that it is good to see a movie seriously considered for Best Movie Oscar that is not from an English language country. While some years see fantastic movies come out of Hollywood or Britain, this was not one of them. When that happens, it should not be surprising that the Best Movie Oscar actually goes to something worthy of the name.

A few thoughts: we used to see some wonderful movies come out of China, but not so much lately. I wonder if that is because of the heavy censorship. There used to be so many great movies coming out of Japan, but not so much lately. I have no idea why. And then there is Korea. For such a relatively small country, they have been making some phenomenally good movies and TV shows. Not to say that all of them are great, but a surprisingly large number of them are amazing. I hope they keep up the good work. Thank goodness for subtitles!

Japanese movie such as Shoplifters should get more coverage last year. Story line was similar to Parasite

Agree with you for a change, well, although there have been some good ones come out since. Koreans really know how to make excellent dramas, and some good action flicks, too (usually involving N/South relations). They don't hold a candle to Japan on anime, of course, and both have decent horror flicks (I'd say Japan wins on volume), but still...

Why should Shoplifters get more coverage? It got plenty, and while it's a decent film it was not the first foreign film to win best picture at the Oscars. And hogwash about them being similar.

Here is a nice interview Bong had with a Japanese interviewer:

Bong's previous movies including "Okja" had premieres in Japan so he is familiar with Japanese audiences.
