It couldn't possibly be that he was boring and forgettable on-screen. Some of that fault could be laid on the script, but many good actors rise above the script. New characters are introduced and discarded all the time - that's part of the job. He can blame it on skin color, but if Denzel Washington had the same part, he would have made more of it.

We stand with you John.

Racism in the motion picture industry is prevalent on both sides of the Atlantic.

I kind of feel he’s pulling the card too fast on this one. They gave him one of the main roles of the story. Sure it didn’t end with him the hero, but that’s the way the story went. He still got a prominent role, one that went to a black person, and one that made him famous. I just don’t empathize with his complaints on this one.

Further decline of quality in the film industry is on the way. Writers and directors pressured to be pc and write woke to order. Lesser actors using race as a card to play to make up for their own lack of talent.

Yes.

We had Lando Calrissian when Lucasfilm was running the francise. Remember Lando? He was very notorious and important.

Bro, you are not a main character. Get over it.

I always was so angry that the kid chosen to play Darth Vader as a child wasnt black.

Agree with Boyega . Seeing the first trailer with him holding a light saber, I thought the story of a former storm trooper discovering he is a powerful Jedi would have been the better story than what we got.

He may bear some of the blame but this has been the theme of American movies since forever. Its not just Star Wars and its not just Disney. Non-white people/characters are put on the side. It used to be women also but now there is a push to put them in the center. Also, non-American characters are commonly changed to American. All this nationalism/ genderism/ racism is rather obvious. Boyega might not have the best case. But a look at Kelly Marie Tran in the same movie might help it along.

Then we have Daisy Ridley and Adam Driver to look at though. They and literally every character, were given horrible scripts and a horrible story to work with. Ridley might be a fine actress but I don't feel she over-came the garbage handed to her. Driver did somewhat to his credit. Driver was probably the only one who did. That plays against Boyega's complaints a bit, but I will side with Boyega. I does look to me like crap was chosen all around so no need to sideline the black character on the basis of crap acting/writing/roles etc.

"They gave all the nuance to Adam Driver, all the nuance to Daisy Ridley. "

This is especially ripe, since being a stormtrooper who questions his allegiance and turns to fight for his former enemies is what most would call a very nuanced role.

More identify politics, labeling and complaining because one group doesn't feel they got more.

The western world has become a joke.

Take this as a real example of how insane things have gotten.

A teen age boy gets a role playing a Japanese character in a school play.

Suddenly a group starts complaining because as they see it he is not Asian.

He is however actually Japanese, yes he is mixed but the only actual Japanese speaker and the only Asian in the school that is Japanese and raised primarily in Asia.

The outrage that a non pure Asian gets to the point where the role is taken away and give to another that Looks more Asian.

Then they have the odassity to ask the mixed boy to teach the month Japanese Asian replacing him how to properly say his limited Japanese lines. He refused.

Pc gone amok!

Certain groups in the west are now professional complainers.

Take the Canadian TV series Flashpoint,

Less than 3% of Canada's population is black, 15% us Asian.

Not a single main Character was Asian but the one main black wasn't enough so due to the professional complainers more black main characters were added.

This is what it has become,

Oh and the school play incident the teen age Japanese mix was a family member so not hearsay.

China, Japan, Korea, etc... Don't make movies with main white or black characters, why? Because their main target audiences are not those groups.

Now if you can find one of the few proper demographic breakdowns of SyFy movies and TV shows one may be surprised.

These movies create characters that the audience can relate to not what is PC and will lose money.

In recent years trying to manipulate facts the stats say more women and blacks are now watching science fiction. Well not really what they have done is change what is in the science fiction category, now fantasies, etc.. are place in SyFy, examples like Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Blade, even the Big bang have all been included in SyFy stats now.

Clearly shows like Star wars, Star Trek, the Expanse, and shows like Buffy, Blade, Big bang are in no way the same and placing them in the same category will not somehow change the audience demographic if true SyFy and the producers, directors and writers know this.

he’s welcome to make and star in his own films.

This is especially ripe, since being a stormtrooper who questions his allegiance and turns to fight for his former enemies is what most would call a very nuanced role.

What you describe is merely the basis for a nuanced role. Clearly the script allowed no scenes to develop that nuance which is what would happen with a truly nuanced role. When did Finn nearly go back to being a stormtrooper because rebels wronged him somehow? Its not like Boyega could write that in is it? Nor could he convey that with just the pitch of his voice or the arch of his eyebrows. Consider the "almost" romantic angle with Rose Tico. That didn't go nowhere because of the actors. That went nowhere because the writers felt they needed some "extra" reason why Rose would sabotage Finn's suicide attack. It was pure garbage writing.

Lead by example.

His acting was totally fake. You could feel it from a galaxy away !

I wonder what he complains about because so many of us endure not being chosen for a better position because of relationships, not competence.

And in the USA, everyone can succeed whatever color : Freeman, Smith, L. Jackson are among the top and best recognized actors in the world (and not for their face value) and continue acting in very good movies.

An actor can refuse a role in a lame movie story. It is also being wise to succeed.

The whole franchise was created in the 1970/80's and effectively centers around a very dysfunctional white family from beginning to end. Anyone else appearing in the films is a secondary character.

Lol, so true, can’t really add more to that.

I don't know the modern Star Wars films and won't comment on the storylines. However, I do know that the franchise has so many tie-ins and related toys like the iconic figures that it will be obvious to the makers which characters are popular with viewers.

If other character's toys were outselling Boyega's by a huge margin, Disney would be stupid not to write plotlines centered on those characters. Star Wars is a crowd-pleasing business, not a piece of high theatre.

You mean the same way "whites" were told "no need to apply",

for the open auditions of the popular B'way hit, NYC's "Hamilton"?

https://nypost.com/2016/03/30/whites-need-not-apply-for-hamilton-open-audition/

Why is it only racism, when blacks are denied a chance at a role?

John’s character never got to master the light saber so ...you might as well forget it...

1 ( +1 / -0 )

Did someone forget to tell John Boyega that he wasn't the main character?  The focus was on Rey and Kylo.  Everyone else was just a supporting character.  As an aside, I haven't seen a movie he has been in where my thought wasn't that another actor in the role (like a Michal B. Jordan) would have improved things.

On top of that the writing was simply bad.  If you want to improve The Last Jedi for example, simply cut out the part of the movie where he and the others went searching for 'the ultimate hacker'.  It added nothing to the plot ('subverting my expectations' that it would lead somewhere) and made the movie feel long.  There isn't anything racist about bad writing and acting.

The most recent trilogy was woke and preachy to the detriment of the stories.  They made a point of including a diverse cast.  That the complaint now is that it wasn't woke enough is amusing.

Boyega is right.

What’s this war everyone keeps talking about?

A war about stars?

Huh. Interesting.

It’s pretty cool, sour puss. Lots of cool characters and settings. In the words of the main character of Star Wars, Alvis Dumbledore, “to infinity, and beyond”!
