Cancel culture is the troll within so many people having a wonderful time ruining things for others. You made an unpopular tweet? Haha! You lost your job, then your wife too and kids are now poor and fatherless! You used an old word for "ghosts" to refer to students you never saw cause they never came to class? Haha! We will call it a racial slur since it turns out they are black and take away your tenure and destroy your reputation. You had a consensual affair? Haha! We will call it an abuse of power and force you to resign. You are a statue or flag or TV show that exists for numerous reasons? Haha! We will focus on just one thing about you we don't like and destroy you, ban you and scorn anyone who disagrees or brings up any of the other facts outside of our hate focus. You did your job being overly dramatic on a "reality" show? Haha! We will drive you to suicide with cruel internet posts and cancel you from life itself.

Cleese is totally right. And I see a ton of people here also doing exactly what he is talking about and frankly they make me sick with their working over-time trying to find ways to take offense at anything they can get their grubby little hands on. Then you have the people who cannot see that and support them doing it.

Cancel culture is just the other side of the unbending, I compassionate, hard-like extremism of the right. It’s arisen as a direct opposition to the right wing extremists who have been trying to redirect the world to even further oppression of minorities.

The ultimate goal of cancel culture is for people who don’t toe the party line to lose their livelihoods and serve as an example to others. Its roots are in envy and bitterness.

Cancel culture pretty much translates to "I am too lazy to deal with other opinions or any social and historical context, which oposes my own world view, so please shut up and leave me alone."

I'm a minority and I don't need guilty (insert race here) people to right perceived wrongs for me. Personally, if race is your go to answer for a problem then that tells me that person is the racist because they need race as a crutch to feel morally superior. The only way to turn the narrative on them is with facts and not emotions.

I don’t see an end to the cancel culture. Unless people fight back and demand it to stop it will continue.

Contributing to the pc cancel culturers problem is they are almost all lacking a sense of humour. They cant really understand humour, they live straight jacket lives with everything categorized into good and not good. “Funny” and not funny.

Theyre the last people who should be regulating humour and yet here we are!

That's just a wordier version of the wife-beater's excuse, "You made me do it!"

We must also remember that cancel culture strongly exists in the deletion of internet accounts and postings. There is an epidemic of cancel culture in internet "moderation" including trouble over using the Spanish word for "black" or the Polish word for a "Polish male". Why did I not just use the words? Concern over being "cancelled" that's why.

WHAT DOES CANCEL CULTURE MEAN?

"Cancel culture" may be a new term, but it has ancient roots extending as far back as the dawn of "civilization" itself when class, caste, money and power began to generate a myriad "cancel cultures". All the "-isms" of social systems operate on CC. As far as political correctness is concerned, the old Japanese adage, 寄らば大樹の影 (shelter under a big tree = serve the powerful if you know what's good for you) succinctly encapsulates its essence, which all goes to show that, as many people are wont to opine, there is nothing new under the sun.

Cancel culture. Does make you think. You often wonder about where and how those doing the cancelling found their sense of entitlement and authority? Also how in a single generation things got so uptight and humorless. The new thought police , as far as we can see can’t actually do much themselves apart from shutting down and demanding others do so on cue the minute things get uncomfortable.

Wasn’t one of the main reasons we communicate, comment on sites like this or share opinions to give yourself the best chance to be proved wrong? For the love of the debate. The hierarchy of ideas, not people! Cancel culture only sees power or the lack there of. Two dimensional, low resolution. Boring.
