"Hey, don't be such prudes! Its not sexualizing children or normalizing peodophilia. Heck, it even won an award at the Sundance Film Festival!"

Prudes. We're going back into the Victorian Age.

If anyone watch the actually movie before just seeing the bad comments about it, you’ll see that the movie is actually about negative impact of The hyper sexualization of young girls and the impression of social media on kids. Netflix ruin the movie by the weird Sexual images they use to promote it.

I can't tell the difference between truth and parody anymore.
Ive seen some of the scenes and they are absolute pedophilia. The filmmakers know exactly what they are doing and it has nothing to do with raising awareness of child porn.

Most of the hip hop dance classes and performances here in Japan have this kind of dancing and costumes. I see this almost every day. Sorry if girls coming of age makes some of you uncomfortable, but there's nothing new here. It was the same for the girls at that age back when I was in late elem/JHS.
bob
its clear to me you haven't seen the movie or even the scenes in question. Pre-teen girls wearing hot pants writhing on the ground rubbing their genitalia while looking at grown men with that "come get it look" is not done in hip-hop classes in Japan. I doubt its done almost anywhere else.
It has nothing to do with sweet coming-of-age stories. Its straight up child porn.
You're either on board with it or against it.

@Fhu
Unfortunately I Started watching it long before Netflix.
Stopped because there is a right way and a wrong way to get the point the director wants across.
This was/is the wrong way.
I am by far no prude.
I am an atheist, primarily socialist, open to all ideas if they have merit.
A movie depicting the plight of sex workers does not have to have nude or explicit sex scenes to get the point across so why does this movie need to explicitly show the most provocative moves, dances, costumes, etc...
It would have shown the directors talent more if she could have achieved the same results without the scenes that will clearly be loved by pedophiles.
My personal opinion is the director may not be as talented as portrayed by many and needed these scenes because she couldn't figure out how to get the message across otherwise.

Well, just out of curiosity, I watched the trailer on youtube. This is nothing compared to some of the stuff that was on Japanese TV in the 80s when I was growing up. But nobody saw that as sexualizing kids, even when the kids were being sexual (boy and girl in the shower together). I particularly remember rather explicit scenes between the kids in the program 毎度おさわがせします (85 to 87). I'm not sure how to translate this in English (Always refreshing you?) Yet, my parents let us watch it. TV became much more tame in the 90s. Especially late night TV.

Its stealth kiddy porn, opening the way for more to follow. Look at current legislation in California. Pedophilia is being normalized.
A French Senagalese black woman as director - that ticks so many must-not-criticise boxes.

Tulsi Gabbard today:
netflix child porn "Cuties" will certainly whet the appetite of pedophiles & help fuel the child sex trafficking trade. 1 in 4 victims of trafficking are children. It happened to my friend's 13 year old daughter. Netflix, you are now complicit.

I havent watched any video clips but did see some pictures & thought... yeah this isnt likely going to go down well in the west & like Gokai I immediately said to myself, this stuff has been in Japan for decades..........sadly
I aint no prude but media sexualizing kids is nasty stuff & sounds like this film crossed boundaries...

Oh the irony of reading this on a site in Japan, the country that sexualizes female minors like no other. Middle aged men dribbling over junior idols the way they do is truly nauseating. If anybody really wants to put an end to this sexualisation of children, they should start here in the land of the rising pervert....
Vanessa Carlisle
Oh here we go. Boys only grab trucks instead of dolls because they were somehow forced. And girls only choose those clothes and those dance moves because they were somehow tricked. What's actually going on is some people want to completely neuter humanity and it starts with crushing anything that could be remotely related to sexuality in childhood.
Yeah. What horror. Kids of opposite gender sharing a shower. Better get them both a penicillin shot just in case. Maybe we just better put them in gender segregated communities and not even let them know the other gender even exists until they are 18.
Like teaching people about driving without showing any actual cars. If the reality is too much for some people maybe they should just withdraw from the topic. If reality is too much then the truth will not be seen and appropriate responses will not be had. Living up in your own head is just fine so long as that's where one stays.

Straight up Japan bashing under an article about a film from France that is about as far removed from Japan as it could be. Its as if America has no child beauty pageants. Its as if Brook Shields never made "Pretty Baby" or did any nude photography before Blue Lagoon. Or Russia and America do not and never have led the world in the production of ACTUAL child porn. Oh no! Lets harp on Japan because of female teen idols with male fans. And lets not forget hand-drawn pictures!
ohara
Vanessa, its interesting that whenever theres an article critical of aspects of Japan there are always posters on JT complaining, “ its not just Japan, blah blah”, and when, as in this case, there is an article about child sexual exploitation in a foreign movie those same posters point out that there should be no mention of Japan (which btw is the child pornography capital of the world.)

Yet another pathetic attempt by SJWs to ruin things for everyone else...
If they don't like it, they shouldn't watch it.

I believe 100% that any adult who defends "Cuties" straight up has child porn on their computers.
Vanessa Carlisle
I believe 100 percent that most adults who attack "Cuties" defenders with accusations of "child porn on their computers" is himself trying to hide a great many things, including but not limited to, child porn on their computers. In fact, most of the extreme negative reactions to preteen girls dancing and showing some skin is derived from loathing one's own arousal. Its the same sort of demon homophobes wrestle with. Self hatred.

@ Vanessa Carlisle
You have never been behind the 'adult' curtain in an DVD store and seen the DVD-Rs of pre-teen girls in bikinis and swimming costumes, have you? By all means delude yourself if it helps you sleep at night.

Utter bs. You excuse child porn and smear those who attack it.
Vanessa Carlisle
How does that stack up to real, actual, hardcore, penetrative child porn? It doesn't. Not by a long shot. The main producers of those are Russia and the United States.
This movie is only child porn by a completely deluded fantasy. But then it was you that claimed Japan is the child porn capital of the world. Its not. Its known as the child porn hub of the world and that's different. That just means what has already been produced is moving through Japan, such as through Japan's servers. Why would anyone focus so much on that compared to who is actually making hardcore, penetrative sex film with actual children? Denial, that's why. And denial is helped along by having a scapegoat that isn't one's own country or culture.
Denial and self-loathing. That's what's driving the unfounded, crazy attacks on this movie. This movie has introduced a tiny crack into the highly pressurized shell holding the psyche of those in denial and self-loathing and now they are exploding. Its amazing that all it took was some pre-teen girls showing a bit of skin and dancing but I guess that is all some people will even allow themselves to glimpse even briefly, as if those girls are some sort of monsters.

What a twisted strategy - accuse those calling out child porn of being - wait for it - repressed child pornographers.
bob
@Vanessa I think its safe to say you don't have children.
Not that it should matter whatsoever...
