Captain EO to close again at Tokyo Disneyland; will be replaced by Lilo & Stitch attraction

There few pieces of cinematic brilliance that come close to matching "Captain EO." The star power of Michael Jackson guided by the directing talents of Francis Ford Coppola in a George Lucas Production all come together in a space-operatic masterpiece that taught us all to dream again.

However, the film was taken from us after a fleeting 11-year run at Disney theme parks around the world. Then in a bittersweet moment it was reopened in tribute to the king of pop’s passing in 2010. And now again we in Japan will have to mourn the 17-minute film’s closing in 2014.

After June 30 next year, the theater will close down and work will begin to open a version of the Stitch Experience in 2015 which has similar attractions running in both Hong Kong Disneyland and Disneyland Paris.

Disney is promising a treat that all ages can enjoy and through the big screen we all can “enjoy surprising and humorous interactions with the mischievous Stitch.” The little blue alien has a large following in Asia and was recently voted the 12th most popular character with Japanese children.

Still, it’s hard to imagine that coming close to the sheer artistry of "Captain EO." For those who aren’t familiar with "Captain EO" (there probably isn’t anyone like that, but just in case), it’s the story of a space captain sent to give a gift to the “Supreme Leader”. Danger awaits on this mission but luckily Captain EO has the gift of laser hands that turn foes into back-up dancers with massive pompadours.

The passionate acting and on-screen chemistry of Jackson and Oscar-winner Anjelica Huston was perfectly complemented by the supporting cast of puppets.

Captain EO was a movie like attraction that lasted like 20 minutes where you go inside and watch a really bad quality 3-D movie (equipped with staple 3-D glasses) and watch a story about Michael Jackson posing as a man referenced as Captain EO , along with his crew, which are basically muppet-like creatures and a robot. They go to a planet, talk to an evil spider lady, and play music in order to transforming her robotic evil minions into back-up dancers, and ultimately her into a shiva-like goddess person.

I went three days ago, it was a horrible movie and the lasers in the actual movie were bright enough to make my eyes squint in pain. The quality of the movie and the 3-D effects look worse than the Terminator ride in Universal Studios that I remember going to when I was 5 (I'm 22 now). It's, err, not really good.

Michael Grant - it's DISNEY LAND!! ... why are no many confusing it with some attraction park for adults? What's wrong with Lilo and Stich - my kids love them!

Man, I grew up watching Captain EO when it was at Anaheim's Disneyland. I remembered being scared out of my mind when the Spider Lady with the long nails comes out and points at the crowd. The movie was 3D and I had never seen a 3D movie before. I would love to see it again in 3D for old time's sake but not at crowded Tokyo Disneyland.

What planet is the author of this article from? Surely the word "brilliance" should be replaced with "lameness". Captain EO was lame when it first came out, and is painfully lame now. The only reason why people bother to look at it is because the line is much shorter than at other attractions. I think both George Lucas and Francis Ford Coppola regret having their names attached to this piece of cinematic "brilliance".
