no more so than say Japanese anime, not sure how scantily clad anime girls in school uniforms is inspiring for women in real life, probably more to appease men.

Has Black Panther really become a pop culture phenomenon?  I agree that the glut of superhero movies makes them feel a bit samey and tired.

Nothing wrong with female leads but Elektra and Catwoman were dud movies. Wonder Woman got praise, however.

At the same time, these Marvel superhero movies are such a tired spent force now. That Spiderman 2 movie from 2017 was so strayed from the original gist, the main character was a wuss and the film itself was just cliché-ridden and terribly godawful.

Anyway, I've had enough superhero movies. Spiderman 2 was a bridge too far for me.

This movie is a dud.

Marvel, DC and 2000AD characters are rebooted all the time. Sometimes it makes sense and works, sometimes it doesn't. Tefe taking over the Swamp Thing mantle bored me, although I wasn't against it in principle. The writing just wasn't engaging enough.

For me, the greatest female character was Halo Jones. Try and get a copy of The Ballad of Halo Jones. Far superior to a lot of Marvel's output. And I say that as a reader of Marvel for over 40 years.

Well, sure, if you factor in that it is a source for many memes and is the butt of many jokes.

Any superhero movie needs a good story, well told and acted. No such thing as a movie genre that has been over done. Only a lack of imagination in making new stories worth telling.

As long as these Marvel and DC movies are entertaining, they can keep on making them and people/fans will go and see them.

Reality bites so movies that release you for a couple of hours with a new or interesting world, will always be popular.

Lets hope Captain Marvel is another engaging movie, regardless of the sex of the superhero. As for the cat, well I am more of a fan of dogs.

Maybe if the movie starred Angelina Jolie doing stunts without CGI it would be a hit.

'Girl power' is a dumb cliché from the vapid Spice Girls - and they themselves are a bunch of dumb bimbos with looks and zero talent. They're a joke. I agree - the headline didn't need to use that stupid phrase because it originates from a stupid corporate phenomena in the first place.

I have nothing against strong female leads in anything but how about a better slogan? This 'girl power' catch phrase is stupid crap.

Besides, these Marvel flicks have strayed light-years too far from the original principals - that is the underlying mature and social themes, science fiction themes behind them. Now the 'superheroes' are wimps and wussies and the teenage-geared story lines steal every action/sci-fy cliché in the book and they are completely tired garbage. Absolute rubbish.

So I'm a white woman, my son is half Japanese and 6 years old (we live in the US), and he loves Star Wars and action films. Kids from a very young age internalize what is "normal" based on what they see around them. We watched the newest Ghostbusters film a few years ago and my son quickly remarked "Wait, why are there no boy Ghostbusters?" It took me by surprise because I was around his age when I saw the original Ghostbusters and it never occurred to me as little girl that I didn't see any female Ghostbusters, because all-male casts were normal.

Then we saw Rogue One a few months later. My son again was shocked to find Asian heroes. "Asian people can be jedi too???" he exclaimed excitedly (and I know they weren't technically jedi in the movie but my son was like 4 at the time). He was so happy and started copying their moves in the living room.

Representation matters. Maybe some people think it's pandering to have a black superhero or a female superhero, but it does matter. I don't want my son to grow up thinking the "norm" is a white man. It's inspiring to see both people who look like you and also who don't look like you in lots of different roles. My son's reactions to diversity on screen really opened my eyes as to why it is so important for these films to be produced.

If he is talking of Donnie Yen, then yes he IS Asian. He is Chinese and very well known in martial arts movies.

I have not heard one good thing about this movie.

It seems like nothing more than yet another media format to shove a social/political narrative down our throats. Which, acknowledging that movies have done that for years, I've grown extremely tired of.

I haven't seen the movie yet, but the trailers really dont grab me enough to shell out 1,800 yen. To tell the truth I knew pretty much zero about who Captian Marvel was. But she'll be a major factor in one of MY must see movies this year, Endgame.

I wasn't a huge fan, they had a run of decent pop tunes but they were certainly media-savvy and definitely not dumb bimbos. And hey, if a slogan like "girl power" could slip into public consciousness, am all for that. They inspired lots of young people, for better or for worse. Personally, I thought the riot grrrl movement had a lot more power to it but that didn't have as much impact as it should have, at least at the time.

Yup. He's not, he's a spiritual warrior - a guardian of the Temple of Kyber and a preacher of the Force.

Like priests and lay preachers, it's down to the individual, of course, to ascertain their fakeness or not :-)

The "force" is in everyone and all living things (remember microscopic Midi-chlorians) - but it's stronger in certain family lines for some reason
