Ossan I just quickly read that article (as it nearly me beauty sleep time) and it seems to me that article is talking about recent Japanese actions in America as they have been thought to be rather invisible in their communities there, it is not about Japanese in Japan. I'll read that article again tomorrow more carefully though.

WTF? Topless to build a school? What will they teach at that school? While it all sounds like a good idea the actions are so not thought out.

They all responded that the government pays for charity work. It isn't that individuals don't but it seems that is more of a public act then a private contribution.

Actually, in every company I've worked for in Japan, charitable contributions were 'suggested' And the recipient was usually the boss's favorite charity so it was less public and more keeping the 'wa' intact.

Anyway, it's a pity the only thing Chinatsu thought would make money (about 6,000,000 yen) is to put her hands over her bare upper body. But since she's a 'talento' she probably doesn't have any singing or acting talent that she can capitalize on. However, good on her for doing what she can.

And 6,000,000 yen is plenty for a school if you don't buy all the things Japanese school under-utillize, like computers and VCRs.

Maybe JapanToday would like to match her contribution?

I think you may be wrong. Eh, whatever her reasons if Chinatsu does something to generate enough funds to build a school in India she's accomplished more than any of her critics I wager. If I were poor, I'd take the person helping me out for their own selfish motives over the idealistic big talker who watches me starve while he pontificates on the true meaning of charity any day of the week and twice on Tuesday.

it is too bad that there's no other way for ms wakatsuki to encourage japanese people (read: men) to give to charity. seems they will gladly pony-up some cash to see a topless, young girl but not even think twice about NOT donating money to build a school in a developing country. the world we live in has truly bottomed-out.

Also if you look at a lot of NPO's and NGO's you will find some Japanese working there. Infact a few years back they use to show the trend of how man Japanese woman choice that route.

If Chinatsu takes off her top to raise charity and it actually goes to the cause what's the problem? There really isn't one. One simple stupid act and she makes money for people who need it. I wish more people were willing to take off their tops for charity.

I might be mistaken here and please correct me if I'm wrong, but over the years it appears that the Japanese don't have the same sense of charity as you often see in the West. We often see the big names of course like Bill Gates and others with their huge foundations that made to help people. And even at a more grass roots level we see a lot of people from the US, UK, Australia, France, NZ helping out others in the world.

But, just in my experience anyway, I very rarely see people from Asia doing the same things. I'm not saying that they don't exist, but (once again) it just seems to me that, in this case Japanese people, aren't of the charitable kind and don't reach out to help others in trouble so much.

So, I'm pretty glad to see this chick try to help out. It mightn't be the best effort, but at least she is making an effort. Hopefully more things like this will catch on. Still I must agree, going completely naked probably would have made a lot more money ... hehe.

Good for her promoting the cause. She knows she can work the demographic here in Japan and make some money for charity so fair play.

Butterfly1 i agree...Im sure she doesnt care about the charity at all and its a bit tasteless but in this country there is such a lack of charity at all that we have to encourage any we see.

I would definitely buy the t-shirt if it were Chinatsu Izawa topless on it.

bamboohat - it is far more sensible for famous people to leverage their specialities to raise money than to contribute at an individual level.

what net effect would her labouring to carry bricks have on the production of the school, vs paying the salary of 50 workers to do the same?

Also, in this way the community wins because workers are paid for their building too.

I hope they can find enough dosh to pay the teachers.

To me, this is a clear case of wanting to the attention for building a school rather than just giving the money. It's great to help out, but it seems she is exploiting some third world need to make herself look good. I'd give her much bigger props if she volunteered to physically help build the school and simply asked for donations instead of turning it into some big "look at me" publicity stunt.

I think its great that a japanese celebrity is doing some kind of charity work . From what Ive seen not enough of it goes on here.

Actually I think this might be better than some musician on drugs doing what he normally does and donating whatever is left after the concert expenses to building a school.

Why not make a porn film? She could get enough from residuals to completely rebuild India's educational system!

Don't know how big will be school building but normal school building may cost just 10% of it. However, moral not money should be the foundation.
