CNN to ramp up streaming as viewers quit cable

CNN plans to launch a subscription streaming service next year in a stepped up effort to connect with viewers without cable or satellite television.

The pioneering 24-hour news channel will be hiring hundreds of new employees for the service to be called CNN+ that will debut in early 2023.

"CNN invented cable news in 1980, defined online news in 1995 and now is taking an important step in expanding what news can be by launching a direct-to-consumer streaming subscription service in 2022," said Jeff Zucker, chairman of parent firm WarnerMedia's news and sports division and president of CNN Worldwide.

The move comes as viewers increasingly abandon cable and satellite "bundles" which have been a mainstay for CNN, whose original name was Cable News Network.

Rupert Murdoch's rival Fox Corp has created a similar application called Fox Nation, launched in 2018.

CNN+ will be "a new, additive experience that complements the core CNN linear networks and digital platforms to serve CNN superfans, news junkies and fans of quality non-fiction programming," according to a statement.

This will deliver on-demand programs, Netflix style, to viewers such as news, series and films, including the travel show "Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown."

CNN+ will also develop its own original programming for the new application.

It will be a paid service with different programming that the current cable offer, but details of the subscription plan were not disclosed.

It will be initially available in the United States followed by a global rollout.

A CNN report said some 450 people would be hired for the service including producers, engineers and marketing professionals, bringing the total staff of CNN some 4,000.

"For 41 years, global audiences have turned to CNN as an essential source of news and information, which is rooted in our deep commitment to quality journalism," said Andrew Morse, CNN Worldwide chief digital officer.

"CNN+ will be built on a foundation of world class reporting and storytelling and a commitment to meet our audiences wherever they are."

CNN= Comedy News Network.

CNN is nothing but an anti Trump station which is now lost as Trump is no longer President.

CNN would be the last place to go to for real news.

CNN became a parody unto itself about 5 or so years ago. An absolute joke of a ‘news’ station. RIP doesn’t really work though guys, cause there will be no peace where you are going.

CNN was one of my first sources of info when I wanted to wake up and have a quick glimpse on what was going on in the world. Stopped checking their website when they closed the comment section back in 2014.

Got even more disappointed a few years later, their hatred for Trump (like him or not!) poisoned their credibility to a point of no return, it didnt matter what time of the day I checked CNN online or on tv somewhere, it was always about bashing a single individual day and night, every single time I turned on the tv the screen was split in two with anchors trashing the same man, countless articles you swear it was written by school children (never read past the title or the 3rd paragraph), there was just no news about the World anymore.

Truth is, people are aware of their true colors and there is no one to blame but themselves.

CNN has MANY fans here! They will be thrilled,

Fakenews is entertaining for some reason? I don't get it.

Brian Stelter is my favourite. Charming, authoritative, honest and a man of integrity. Being able to stream him at will will be fantastic.,

Well put, and I had similar experiences as you.

Thanks for the laugh.

The only value little Brian provides is as comedy fodder for Mark Dice.

Mark Dice the far-right conspiracy theorist? OK.

Fakenews is entertaining for some reason?

Which is why Fox “News” is the most popular of the MSM.

He only upsets you because he's correct. CNN is a laughing stock nowadays, and Stelter is one of the biggest clowns. He does have plenty of stiff competition though.

Agreed. It’s far too partisan to be taken seriously.

Give us links to the kind of non-partisan media we need.

Thanks in advance.

Aren't you smart enough to figure that out for yourself?

You're welcome.

Aren't you smart enough to figure that out for yourself?

I think I’m reasonably intelligent but I can’t say I know all non-partisan, serious media out there. There are just too many. There are new ones popping up all the time online.

I’m just asking for your recommendations. I thought it was a civil question.

CNN is for partisans.

True

Fox is for moronic, hysterical partisans.

Not really as you have liberals, conservatives, and independents as well as libertarians that watch and speak on the network, CNN didn't do that, and wow is you if you defended Trump or Republicans, you were released from your contract. CNN just made their bones off of bashing Trump and then the Jan. 6 and QAnon drivel, other than that, they don't have anything worthwhile to watch. Definitely Stelter. Loved how Wolfe told him off the other day, that was the best TV ever.

Loved it when Cuomo humiliated rudy on CNN, the crazy eyes, the incoherent speech was the first sign there was something wrong with this sorry person.

Maybe they need a few more crazy GOP nutters to come on the show to increase the rating.

Though faux seems to be discovering something that was unknown to them 'The Truth'.

hannity begging people to take Covid seriously was surprising , taking into fact that he called it nothing worse than the flu last year. Sponsor money drying up I guess!!!

Sorry, bass4funk said that CNN never has any Republicans on their channel, so this must not have happened. Any numerous videos you can provide that prove that Rudy was on CNN — or any other the other thousands of clips of pro-Trump GQP people on CNN — don't actually exist. I'm sorry to break it to you this way.

Fair enough. Apologies for being so brusque.

Actually, I think it would be extremely difficult to find any media that an objective observer could say is steadfastly non-partisan, mainstream or otherwise. Humans being humans are going to carry our biases with us to a certain extent wherever we write, narrate, etc. And we tend to prefer consuming media that caters to our biases. It's just easier to absorb (less critical thinking required).

Perhaps in cases where there is plenty of time to seek out, verify and write up information, the opportunity for non-partisanship is there, but it's increasingly rare and disparate. Nowadays with the 24-hour news cycle, "news" is consistently pumped out and the line between news and opinion is frequently blurred. Even venerated publicly-owned media such as the BBC, CBC, ABC and NHK, which like to rest upon their old reputations for impartiality have adopted biased reporting, either through omitting important stories or facts that don't suit the interests of who controls editorial policy or the purse strings, or promoting certain agendas ahead of others. I could go on about this all day but have other things to do.

So I can't really recommend anything specific, but instead suggest reading/watching a wide variety of media from across the spectrum and different fields, which I guess is probably what you're doing anyway. I say that in good faith.

I cannot blame CNN for wanting to cash in on streaming, but what will they gain when I can easily go to their website or just watch them on TV right now?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

The only thing that's keeping CNN from being the worst news channel in the world is the existence of Fox, Newsmax and OAN.

-4 ( +1 / -5 )

Sorry, bass4funk said that CNN never has any Republicans on their channel,

Lying and a poor intellect are the hallmarks of the right wing, so there's no point trying to convince them otherwise. The list of the GOP liars who have come to the network and been humiliated is too long to count , though most of them are so scared of getting humiliated again they dont have the courage to come on the network!!!

Someone saying that Mark Dice, an evolution-denying, Biblical literalist conspiracy theorist who believes in Pizzagate is good and cool: on topic.

Me saying he's bad for the above reasons: off topic.
