Comedian Cha Kato, 68, weds 23-year-old woman

Comedian and actor Cha Kato, 68, recently married a 23-year-old woman unaffiliated with the Tokyo celebrity scene recently, Shukan Post reported this week. The couple apparently registered their wedding in June. Kato divorced his previous wife in 2003 and had battled health problems until a few years ago, but friends of the actor say he is fine now.

Shukan Post reported that his new wife is a Hiroshima native, describing her as a “classic Japanese beauty.” Reports also suggest the couple had not been dating long before the marriage, despite a nearly 45-year age gap. Friends of Kato told the magazine that he wanted to avoid a headline-grabbing wedding.

It's okay, as long as a commoner doesn't marry a younger girl.. no problem.

exactly what's wrong with this? You only have one life, live it to the fullest. And if dating someone who could be your granddaughter makes you happy, go for it

8 ( +9 / -1 )

pics or it didn't happen

4 ( +6 / -2 )

he registered in june and is now telling people now. I don't think any news organization has a picture of this

Money and fame, move on...!

-2 ( +1 / -3 )

This is the guy from The Drifters. He is filthy rich and has "battled health problems."

Does this sound familiar?

-2 ( +2 / -4 )

OK - seriously, he bride must be none other than Shimura Ken dressed as a "classic Japanese beauty". Dafun da!

5 ( +6 / -1 )

I wonder what the young woman sees in him. Kato is rather humorless in his personal life--a huge difference from his television personality.

-7 ( +0 / -7 )

maki, he is sick and 68, that's what she sees in him.

1 ( +4 / -3 )

Here's one for all you dyed-in-the-wool fans of the Drifters out there: Kato to bride on his honeymoon night: "Chotto dake yo!"

4 ( +6 / -2 )

@ Maki as my father once said "One foot in the grave one on a banana peel"

1 ( +2 / -2 )

Hey more power to him. If Hugh Hefner can still bag gorgeous young women, in his 80's, then Cha has nothing to be ashamed of.

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

golddigger.. nuff said

1 ( +3 / -2 )

The song "Golddigger" just magically started playing in my mind.

3 ( +4 / -1 )

¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥

3 ( +4 / -1 )

I'm sorry for Kato....marrying a 23 year old?? Goldigger is the only thing I can think of...

-1 ( +4 / -5 )

May they have a happy marriage and a long life together. God bless them.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

"One foot in the grave one on a banana peel"

LOL. Haven't heard that one in a while...

0 ( +1 / -1 )

I hope she does not have a sensitive gag reflex.

-5 ( +1 / -6 )

$$$$ yen $$$$??? maybe, but if Kato Cha is happy, that is what counts!

3 ( +4 / -1 )

if Kato Cha is happy, that is what counts!

And his young lady.♥

I wish them both all the best.

For all his public success (or maybe because of it) I don't think Kato's private life has been all that wonderful - late marriage, divorce, illness. Normally I'm not keen on spring-autumn marriages, but in this case I hope his new young wife gives him a new lease on life and that they get to celebrate his centenary together surrounded by a passel of little ones.

1 ( +3 / -2 )

I'm sure it's all about love - nothing to do with the money he has or the fact he may well kick the bucket soon. Anyway, the bloke has won his lottery - I guess every 68 year old man dreams of marrying a girl in her early 20s - why would he stick to senior citizen women in retirement homes? He's probably a player.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

W-O-W !!! hummm. . . .he's 68? She's 23? I'm 66! Kato-suma is my idol! :) If he's a player, then he is a LP.

4 ( +7 / -3 )

If he's a player, then he is a LP.

lol! brilliant!

Japanese reports suggest his bride is from some wealthy corporate family, so the gold digger angle maybe doesn't play out.

Oh yeah? Then I will gladly retract my previous statement of "Goldigger" and wish them both HAPPINESS and wish them lots of LOVEMAKING and even babies if possible.

Ahh, LOVE and BABIES~~ Yummy ^_^

I don't think having a young mum and an old dad that will not be long for this earth is the best situation for a kid. But in the grand scheme of things a lot of children have it far worse...

0 ( +2 / -2 )

68 is still ballin' hard. Nice!

1 ( +4 / -3 )

The tabloids are slacking! Isn't it their job to let us know before Kato Cha lets us know??

3 ( +4 / -1 )

People marry for all kinds of different reasons. Poeple often pooh - pooh marriages of this nature, but I'd say that neither person is under any illusions about what they are getting themselves in to. The old guy gets to tap into the fountain of youth as a last hurrah, and the woman marries into financial security, and a relatively short married life - with all that entails. It's not up to anybody else to condemn them for it.

5 ( +6 / -1 )

Should I make it to 68 ,? What better Tonic before I see them "Pearly Gates", Than a Beutiful Lady who makes me feel 28? ? Happy Days,Folks!!

1 ( +2 / -1 )

Who cares if it is about real love or money... as long as they are both happy...

I hope I can find myself a 23yr old when I'm 68.

It is NOT UP TO YOU to decide what age someone's parents should be! I am 30 and Mr. BlueWitch is 38 but if he was 48 or 58 or 68, I would have marry him still....because age does not define someone.

However, because of the times we are living now we have to be careful with the golddigging/money issues, unfortunately. Long time ago, we didn't have to. Love was mainly the reason, even when the age gap was remarkable.

Is she really married him because she loves him, then good for her!! I wish her happiness and long life!

2 ( +3 / -1 )

Personaly the gold digging concern means nothing to me. Unless she robs his kids from previous marraiges of any inheritance (if he has any), but frankly he can live in a fools paradise if he wants to , it's only money.

Sorry I am not deciding anything for anyone, so there is no need to shout...

I am simply stating that a person that is already struggling with illness having a child so late in life increases the chance that their child will have to go through their life without a dad.. missing out on the times & events they would share together, the advice & support he might have given, and possibly losing their best friend and playmate while still a child. It can be a source of regret for the parent and child.

As I already mentioned, that is still better than not being born at all, and his wealth and situation will mean that his kid is unlikely to want for many of the things that other children lack. I wouldnt judge him as being either right or wrong for deciding to have a child, I can only state what my own concerns would be in his condition.

I take care of my health for the sake of my family, so I can play with my son, and live as long as possible with them. I know what it is like to lose a parent at a young age, and I have seen friends that lost their own fathers when teens act bitterly when observing the good relations their peers have with their fathers. I also observe the relationship of my own father (61) with his 90 year old mother (his father having lived to 92), and feel very happy for him he had his parents for so long. If I was Kato-san I would regret being so old and ill if I were to have a child, and would consider the impact of my likely early death on that child.

Good luck to them but it does beg the question if they have kids. Whose nappy will she change first?

Hey, if Kato-san can still get his swerve on at age 68, then more power to him. Age is just a number. I wish them the best of luck.

@TokyoTanuki

No worries there my friend, I called her a golddigger at first because I was like...damn..he's filthy rich and 68? LOL But then someone mentioned she's from a nice rich family herself so, yeah..why not, right?

About babies...well..it's their own decision ultimately and it depends whether they wish to have a baby or not.

The females in my family have the tendency to marry older guys, for generations. Would you be surprised if I told you that my grandmother (mother's side) married at the age of 17 my grandfather who was 52?! That's right... A very HUUUGE age gap in there but hey, they married because they sure loved each other, 40+ years of marriage plus 8 children including one set of twins proved that. My only regret is that my grandpa died(i think he was 94?) when I was 10? and Grandma still doing fine but alone. For what its worth, I would go crazy if Mr.BlueWitch die before me..

Thank you for your post. ^_^

Even when the age gap is 10, 20, 30 or 45 like in this case, what matters the most if how truly they love each other. How devoted are they in their relationship, because at the end TRUE LOVE does not have a color, age, race or creed.

1 word: VIAGRA!

2 ( +2 / -0 )

wow get real. I wonder if people would feel the same way IF it was their dad at 68 marrying a 23 yr old Girl. Hefner? Bad example! he is beyond Rich & many bimbos just want to be in playboy & make money. EVERYTIME this huge age braket thing happens, Surprize! the guy is always very RICH. (True love) my Butt.

There's gotta be a prenup in there somewhere.

And, if he turns 69 before she has her next birthday, she's only 1/3 his age. Plenty of time for a second husband!

1 ( +1 / -0 )

I hope they live happily ever after.

I wonder what her parents, who are probably 15 years younger than Kato, think of their new son-in-law.

I beg to differ....when my maternal granparents got married (she was 17, he was 52) neither of them was rich. In fact they were dirt-poor and had to work the fields and such. Very decent country side people. But then, we are talking about 50 years ago? They were married for 40+ years and had 8 kids. Love was REAL and plenty. and believe it or not, it was my grandmother who pursued my grandfather and asked him to marry her. He wasn't very sure because of the age gap, but after several months of courtship, he finally caved in. LOL

I think good for the geezer. High five! As for the girl, she is old enough to decide for herself, and if this is what she likes, great.

Very interesting posts but...do you know what is a “Quote” ?

@pacific

For some UNKNOWN reason my laptop or system or perhaps even Mozilla won't let me use the QUOTE feature... I've been trying for ages now.

Sorry for the great inconvenience I may have caused you.

He was part of a tv program recently with Atsushi (London Boots) where they had set up a go-kon situation with girls that age. Kato was truly shy and embarrassed throughout the program by the "unreservedness" of these young women. The girls and Atsushi really tried hard to give him a good time but he kept repeating that he was not used to those kind of women. He acted really weird when he was asked to hold the hand of one of these young ones. Weird guy! In other news: I've heard that he's a real bully among his colleagues especially the younger generation. Demanding respect at ridiculous levels... Wasn't it Shinsuke who was reprimanded and not allowed to appear on tv for half a year because he had disrespected Kato?

No, no relation with kato...shunsuke, at that time, has been disrespecful (and hitting her if i remember well) to a woman and in a press conference crying, begging for mercy.

Sempai/kohai relations are a really strange way to live together...after 37 years in Japan, never will be my way to live in harmony with...anybody.
