Couldn't agree more. The marvel movies literally have a plot that a 5 year old can understand. They are like Power Rangers on steroids. I have to hand it to the Marvel execs for exploiting the stupidity of the masses so brilliantly.

I do get what they are saying but I am not sure it is necessary to say it. Most people understand there is a difference. There is a kind of continuum from film as art such as Raging Bull and Apocalypse Now through to film as pure entertainment such as in the Marvel Universe. Both are equally entertaining but in different ways. Interestingly the new Joker movie from DC comics but pays homage to Scorsese and harkens back to the days of more aesthetic movie making.

Dumbing down and down is the most profitable policy for all branches of the media since the sinking standards of public education provide ever more fodder for the insatiable maw of commerce. It's a no-brainer that little profit can be turned by catering to the tastes of an intellectual minority, but thankfully the necessity and demand for works of art will never expire.

It's fine that these artists express their opinions, and I totally agree with them, but i do enjoy a Marvel film as-well.

But on the other hand, the quote by Brie Larsen can apply here even though I'm quoting her out of context:

'Not everything is made for you.'

There's room for everything.

Certainly have to be in the right mood to sit down and watch Apocalypse Now or Raging Bull. And also have to be in the right mood to watch a Marvel flick. Both are entertaining in their own way and both can satisfy a viewer depending on the mood he or she is in.

"I don't know that anyone gets anything out of seeing the same movie over and over again," the 80-year-old filmmaker said.

Yes, he is supporting Scorsese who just directed the Irishman. Another Martin Scorsese Gangster Movie starring Al Pacino, Joe Pesci, and Robert DeNiro. Deja Vu?

Irony or just publicity for their movies?

Is it Necessary?

"he's right because we expect to learn something from cinema, we expect to gain something, some enlightenment, some knowledge, some inspiration."

Totally agree, add wild speed and the expedables to the list.

Movies as inspiration, movies as entertainment, whatever man, no point hating the market, especially as we all worship the "free-market" so much. You can't just love it when it works in your favor.

"some enlightenment, some knowledge, some inspiration"

Because there is so much of that in movies like Goodfellas, and Casino.

exactly. and funny because those are two movies that i really don,t care (from Scorsese). incredibly overrated and stupid movies, if you ask me.

the thing with Scorsese is the way he glorifies violence and mobsters. example, the ending of Goodfellas, the whole movie leads to that final line and the answer is : better be a schnook than a disgusting criminal. most people think like that, but Scorsese forces you to sympathise with the ugly side, in a way that,s completely unrealistic, real life doesn,t work like that, being a bad guy isn,t cool, isn,t funny, that,s why i completely separate Scorsese,s gangster stuff from The Godfather and The Sopranos, because in those movies/tvshow, things are "just" like that (and it ain,t pretty), nothing is forced, unlike Scorsese stuff in which everything is forced and annoying, even the dialogue. most of Scorsese,s movies are unrealistic, the average person won,t relate to them, so it strikes me as a bit funny he,s been criticizing Marvel. movies are supposed to entertain, there was always good and bad movies, but in the end it,s all about entertainment.

but the thing is, i,m gonna keep enjoying some of Scorsese,s movies and some of Marvel movies, and as for Coppola, Apocalypse Now and The Godfather are two of my favorite movies, and nothing,s gonna change no matter what they say, i think that,s the most important thing we should take from this.

Coppola and Scorsese are dead on right and we all know it!

“I don’t like this kind of art, therefore it is terrible and only idiots will enjoy it.”

Cannot judge. I have never watched a Marvel movie and have no plan to.

Today screenplay writers are yester-year comic book writers. Comic have and always will be very popular throughout the world. look at Anime. I can wait for Marvel to Make Movie with the hero being Atom Boy ( Astro Boy ). Now I would sit down and watch that.

Comments from another out of his time "art house" movie maker. His movies are not making the income of the popular Marvel movies and he cant grasp why. He is past his best by date. Like a sportsman who has past his prime he should just retire and enjoy the new generation.

Fans obviously don't care what he says, or what Scorsese says. People go to the movies to be entertained and if they were not getting what they wanted they wouldn't be going.

Nicely said you have no thumbs down as those who enjoy the fodder for insatiable maw of commerce movies find the aritsty both abstract and herculean and melee with the intended consept.

Love both men, but they’re from a different time era.

bass4funkOct. 22 06:06 pm JSTLove both men, but they’re from a different time era.

A different time era when movies were art, expressions of humanity instead of money-grabbing cliché-ridden garbage. Ever since George Lucas made his phenomenal STAR WARS which ran in the theaters from May 1977 - late 1979 directors have been trying to capitalize on future potential blockbusters like that. Unfortunately, Hollywood has lost its creative vitality, they got the wrong notion. All they want to do is make as much money as George Lucas did. Therefore you get cliché-ridden trash, overrated bores like 'Titanic', paint-by-numbers violence-for-the-sake-of-it and artsy-fartsy drivel for the snobs.

The new Joker movie is a thing of beauty.

Plot gymnastics in marvel movies make me tired.

Logan was good though, because of characters.

I don't have a problem with a studio making a dumbed down movie for kids every once in a while. I'm sure neither do Scorcese or Coppola.

The problem is that the Marvel movies are doing so well that they're killing off entire other genres. Studio heads see how much money a Marvel movie makes and then wonders, "Why should we produce some interesting period-piece drama? Marvel movies have drama. Why should I bankroll some comedy film? Marvel movies have comedy."

seriously its fantasy fiction, the special effects alone are worth the watch. People want to be entertained and it doesnt always mean non fiction works. End of the day people will vote with their wallets and Avengers box office receipts show people cant get enough of it. Fact is most of the biggest grossing films in history have been fanasy fiction/ sci fi. Theres only so many non fiction subjects you can make a movie about

-2 ( +6 / -8 )

I don't go to movies anymore, since all I see is extreme violence, death and destruction and no entertainment for me.

-2 ( +1 / -3 )

I agree with them completely.
