Ask Daniel Day-Lewis to host it next year.

Take away the glitz, just give em the awards and the critics will still criticize the show. That's their job.

He did better than expected tbh, but hey if you invite the guy who created Family Guy to host the show, you already can expect some offensive jokes.

Every year, same story. Day before Oscars everyone is excited. Day after everyone is complaining. So boring!

papigiulio -- exactly. Hell the guy is responsible for "Ted", so what did they expect? Not like they have not seen his level of humor. What was truly "offensive" to me was the incredibly lame show itself. 90 minutes between the first and second major awards -- supporting actor and actress. And that time filled with the worst form of singing and dancing. Stuff that would not even make it onto a third-rate variety show. And then they rush the last four or so major awards into the last fifteen minutes. The producers should be canned, along with Seth.

Make it a Joint with the Razzies!

I was groaning at first then laughing halfway through. So whatever.

Get Trey Parker and Matt Stone for next year's hosts :)

The critics were out to get Seth long before the telecast, and they did. Despite that, every human I've spoken with thought he was hilarious, especially the intro.

The Anti-Defamation League (ADL), an anti-Semitism watchdog, blasted the jokes as “offensive and not remotely funny.”

I think there is an option of not having to laugh. I don't think the jokes were any more offensive than "Irish" jokes I keep hearing, and moreover, they were jokes, not racial hatred. To be honest, Seth was much better than previous presenters, but he and all the award presenters were very very contrived.

I watched a few bits over the top of me newspaper n thought the presenter seemed quite good. Its the stuffiness of the crowd/audience that makes me cringe...holier-than-thou snottiness. Its the kind of event that I dont think deserves screen time anyway...theres nothing interesting or remotely exciting about it..though my wife clearly disagrees!

That was actually pretty tame for Seth MacFarlane. Maybe he shouldn't had held back. It'd offend a lot of people, but at least no one would call it dull.

My favorite part of the Oscars is the ending.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

surprisingly witty Daniel Day-Lewis…

Really? He told one lame joke about being a committed method actor. MacFarlane was a bit off at times but not THAT bad. Maybe next time have it hosted by Peter Griffin and Stewie?

Seth was the highlight. A lovely roast. Doesn't anyone remember all the Hollywood celebrity roasts? They ALWAYS ripped each other in every un-PC way, and it was hilarious. People who can't laugh at themselves must just take themselves TOO seriously. And if the actresses feel uncomfortable about a comedian referencing their celluloid-exposed body parts, then perhaps they should remain covered up. Charlize, particularly, is a hypocrit.

Go Seth!

Seth was being Seth.. but he is not that funny.. what is wrong with having Jay Leno.. the average age of Oscar viewers is 20 years older than 20 years ago. I knew there would be no Japan actors anywhere in sight. I guess necklaces are out and earrings are in as fashion.. stupid.. Anne Nipples Hathaway dress was just wrong. I hated that mouse of a woman who did the red carpet segment, she made other women look fat and big and then they sing a song making fun of the losers?? No class. What is up with guys all having a taller girlfriend? There is really not much glamour other than George Clooney and Argo would not shut up and let him say something. I was glad that Life of PI won some awards. Les Miserables is what theatre is about it make me cry. Only Quentin Tarantino was cool enough to promote Peace. I hate when people thank their wives... just say I thank my family, friends and co-workers. I think I would just say in my speech ... "I only have one person to thank.. Me. Goodnight Hollywood".

Great show! Loves it. So glad to Chinese director Ang Lee get the Oscar. He's so cool. After the show he went to In-andOut for a Double-Double with his Oscar in hand.

Tripe,Utterly B.S.- the only saving grace was the great Shirley Bassey, who proves once again Talent trumpsALL!

Sorry sensitive women and Jews but he was good. I liked his acid humour. Lines like "everybody is dressed up and we look like we're in a church, only with more people praying" made me laugh out loud.

2 ( +4 / -2 )

Sorry, but this is not humor, it's base. Seth MacFarlane is an idiot. I actually feel kind of bad for a lot of people here who go to see Ted knowing NOTHING of what it's about and after being embarrassed about (and not understanding) the humour.

-3 ( +4 / -7 )

Seth did as fine a job as anyone else who's done it recently, and a might bit better than most. Still, the idiots out there who don't get his humour (ie the Academy) should have known what they were getting into. Great show Seth!!!

Maybe the whole concept and style of these award shows is really getting old. The humor is predictably of the "roast" variety nowadays, especially after the success of Brit comedian, Ricky Gervais. All those boring, endless "thank you" messages can put an insomniac to sleep. Some of the gushing is downright embarrassing. And if you really want to know how good or bad a movie is, then you can't beat the full spectrum of views at rottentomatoes.com. But I guess the marketing value for the winners is still commercial gold.

To each his own. List who you think is funny and we will be the judge if you know real humor.

I watch the Oscars every year but this year I thought that it was really boring.

What´s next then?, to put Homer and Marge Simpson to host the show?...

An Old Fart maybe, but a liberal since the day I was born (with an outrageous sense of humor, btw), I was nonetheless utterly repulsed at the Oscar emcee's (I've forgotten his name already, thank goodness) incredibly crude one-liner about Lincoln. (In this JT article, I find no mention of it.) He had been talking about Daniel Day-Lewis's ability to "be" Lincoln. Then he said, "Gee, I thought John Wilkes Booth was the only guy that got into Lincoln's head!"

The emcee should be hung in Effigy -- a small suburb of Los Angeles.

WOW, Do you have anything nice to say? All you did was complain!

I think Charlize was in on it, as (a) I think she's actually working on a movie with Seth right now, and (b) apparently they were best buds at his after party.

I think it's amusing that supposedly liberal people got their delicate feathers ruffled by a little cheeky humor. Talk about thin skinned!

Greatpaperclip, perhaps you're right, but she acted like a high school girl who got caught with a hickey. Her shrinking in the seat was funny. And Naomi Watts, too. I didn't know liberals could be such prudes.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

fanofjapan, the one-liner about Lincoln was brilliant. It also exposed not only how thin skinned the people are, but also the depth of the Lincoln idolatry. Really, is 150 years still too soon?

Let Courtney Love do the show next year!!

TV ratings are in:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-21584844

This year's Oscars attracted a US TV audience of 40.3 million, a million more than tuned in to 2012's broadcast.

According to the ABC network, the show - hosted by Seth MacFarlane, creator of hit TV cartoon Family Guy - drew the largest Oscar audience for three years.

Last year's show, hosted by comic Billy Crystal, was seen by 39.3 million, while 2011's was seen by 37.6 million.

According to statistics company Nielsen, MacFarlane's involvement helped boost interest among young men and the 18- to 49-year-old age group.

Figures for the latter demographic, which is much coveted by TV advertisers, were up 11% on last year, while the 18- to 34-year-old male audience saw a 34% increase.

Yawn. The entire Hollywood thing is boring beyond belief. It is now mostly a media created self hype. Much better things to look at and do.

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

Good entertaining show!! Kept the pace and some of Seth's jokes were off the cover a bit, and was a bit nervous of what he would say next, but certainly kept people on their toes.

I lived in Hollywood many years.. I know the system.. I know the actors.. the agents.. the producers.. the media... the advertisers.. the studios.. Sodom and Hollywood... there is no business like show business.. it is a beautiful industry.. that has lost its soul... a small group of immoral, creative, Jewish, gay, innocent, corrupt, selfish, egotistical, rich, borrowed, insecure, racist, short sighted, thieves who lose money and think the world revolves around them.. look at Television in America.. it sucks.. Look at movies.. very little original and always self absorbed.. pushing the agenda of a few. But you watch.. you complain.. you dont make anything better for a global audience.. you watch Bollywood make billions.. you watch China not make a thing worth anything but now are the focus of the Pirates and backslappers.. you would sell their mothers to get an award..

-2 ( +2 / -4 )

"For the insiders at the Oscars, this kind of joke is obviously not taken seriously... But when one considers the global audience of the Oscars of upwards of two billion people, there's a much higher potential for the 'Jews control Hollywood' myth to be accepted as fact."

Well, there must be some truth to this statement as I am not an American and I do not live in the U.S. and they had me thinking that myth was true... glad they cleared that up. Phew!

The world is hanging on a balance: Stephen Hawking, Michio Kaku, Aung San Suu Kyi et al. on one end, and Seth MacFarlane and Adam Sandler on the other.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

And the advertisers were also boing.. did not make entertaining or Oscar/Film/Hollywood themed ads when a billion people watching.. none of the sponsors are in films.. Hyundai does a not of high speed chases and stunts? There were no high tech sponsors.. in the Dolby Theatre Show.. Sony should have grabbed the sponsorship of the the theatre when Kodak went belly up.. in a show about show business.. the advertising and the ad agencies... gave a very poor showing. No Coke for you.
