Daisuke Matsuzaka and his wife to make first appearance on 'SMAPxSMAP'

Boston Red Sox pitcher Daisuke Matsuzaka, 28, will make his first appearance on Fuji TV’s "SMAPxSMAP," alongside his wife and former Nippon TV announcer Tomoyo Shibata, 34, when the show airs live on Monday Jan 12 at 10.15 p.m. This will be the first time Matsuzaka and Shibata have appeared on a variety show together. It will also be SMAPxSMAP’s first show of the year, and will include some special segments along with the traditional Bistro Corner, in which the SMAPsters cook for visiting celebrities.

When interviewed by a Fuji TV reporter, Matsuzaka said he had wanted to be a guest on Bistro SMAP ever since he started playing professional baseball, but said he was a bit embarrassed about being on the show with his wife. When Matsuzaka said he was looking forward to dessert, his wife said she wanted SMAP to use white meat in the main course.

Shibata said the couple sometimes cook together, but that she doesn’t let Matsuzaka use knives just in case he cuts himself, so he is in charge of frying and so forth. She also said: “I love watching men in the kitchen, so I hope he is inspired by SMAP and cooks more often.”

The show on Jan 12 will go to air live as a New Year special. Matsuzaka and Shibata will take part in some games and singing, and talk about their views on ideal partners and marriage.

If the klutz were to cut himself badly enough, he wouldn't be able to pitch. But, yeah, professional athletes have some strange things written into their contracts, for example, no skiing or other activities that might make them unavailable.

a bit embarrassed about being on the show with his wife... she doesn’t let Matsuzaka use knives just in case he...

No doubt, a healthy relationship.

Apparently she started dating him when he was 19, she had her hooks into him early. It seems to be a right of passage for those few Japanese players who make it to MLB to marry an announcer from back home, usually they are older and know how to 'look after' their husband (essentially be their mother and PR manager). The biggest exception being Matsui.

If you were married to someone who brings home tens of millions of dollars because of what he can do with his hands, you'd probably take over the vegetable slicing, too.

You couldn't pay me enough to eat the vomit that those meal bimbos cook up each week on that program.

This program makes Sakai san's cookery program look like real entertainment.

The cooking/interview/entertainment show that SMAP are featured in can be quite funny.

I have long suspected that there is staff to make the presentation dishes for the video closeups but the band actually makes the guests' dishes. Guess that is how "meals for everyone" is possible-extra food made before hand. Though, if the men actually have picked up some cooking skills, they must be popular at home with friends and family.

Nakai is a ham as the maitre d' and Shingo tries to add a light sketch at the end. From what I can determine, he usually tries to coerce or implore guests to favour his cooking team's efforts.

He can't slice veggies but is still allowed to fry things? Living life on the edge, isn't he?

What is so funny if they were twice his age? You mean they're in their 50s? SMAP members are in their 30s! Get your facts right so you won't make silly comments.
