Dante Carver gives Shiori Kutsuna chocolate for White Day

Actress and Pocky Princess Shiori Kutsuna, 17, and actor and Softbank White Family member Dante Carver, 33, demonstrated their groove at an event in Shiodome this week held to promote a collaboration between confectionery company Ezaki Glico and Softbank Mobile Corporation.

Beginning March 1, Softbank Mobile customers who access the campaign website and show a member of staff their downloaded White Day image are eligible for a chocolate made by Glico - designed in the shape of the White Family dog. The campaign precedes the upcoming White Day on March 14, on which men give gifts to women who gave them chocolates on Valentines Day.

Carver presented Kutsuna with a 40 cm by 40 cm chocolate and Kutsuna, who was born and grew up in Sydney until she was 14, said: "They don't have White Day in Australia and this is my first time to receive something for it, so I'm pretty happy."

The pair then showed off the dance that Kutsuna performs in the Pocky commercials currently showing on TV.

Does anyone proof read these articles before posting them?

Anyway, I like Dante Carver... Don't know the other chick.

She's been "in-country" only three years and is already the "Pocky Princess"? Impressive. Her acting skills must be considerable to achieve that kind of success in such a short time.

Stole the words right out of my head! I agree, shot right to stardom in very little time. I suppose there are a few pissed off native star chasers wanting to know what affiliation her parents have in the entertainment industry.

I like Dante Carver but wonder, has he done anything except TV commercials? Any other claim to fame here?

Most companies don't do transfers for 10 years. Relax.

There is a legitimate reason for posters to bring up racial issues / racism. Bottom line: Softbank (and Glico) picked Carver because of his skin color. Black man, white dog, dark chocolate, white chocolate, etc. Whether this translates as racism is a trickier question, but I don't think it's a moot point.

Moderator: Sorry, we ruled that racism is not a relevant topic to discuss on this thread.

Hasn't this actor been doing these commercials for a while now? I remember seeing a SoftBank commercial a few years ago with him and the dog appearing. Anyway, I see no racism in this commerical. Folks should stop having a knee jerk reaction whenever the terms Black and White appear and there is a person with some African ancestry is involved.

I saw the commercial. She's cute. I've never heard her speak. Does she has an Aussie accent?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Yes, I KNOW they are Japanese but since they escaped I wouldn't expect them to come back and drag their 14 year Aussies child with them to suffer the same way they did in school.

Gee tmarie. Do you ever read a book? There are literally thousands of thousands of Japanese families who are ordered to move overseas because of their fathers employed in a multi-national corporations. It's called 駐在員. Look it up. And in Shiori's case, her mother and her brother also moved back to Japan while her father still remains in Australia. So perhaps they actually didn't "escape" nor did the parents "suffer" during their education here in Japan.

goddog... I don't see anything racist about it.. Japanese women love black men and so it is fitting that they show them getting along well and enjoying dancing (you see a lot of this in Okinawa) with each other.

No the fact is she is under age and the Japanese consider her foreign and the salaryman perverts druel over her. Her "acting" skills have nothing to do with it as she has not been in anything other than a few commercials.

Much like Becky a few nights back berated by a comedian for being "gaijin" although Becky was born and raised and in Japan, but as the comedian told her, "Well you are a hafu so you are gaijin not Japanese so you do not understand from the point of 'we Japanese'"

On any other TV system around the world this comedian would have been flayed, but in Japan because Becky is a hafu, not one single word of criticism because "Poor widdle Japan simple island people". Or in Japanese 島国感情 - shimagunikanjyo.

Sorry, but I see this whole thing as using a black dude dressed up with tights and spats an shoe tapping abilities. It is a racist gig.

(Is goddog looking at the same picture I'm looking at?) In the picture I see, he's wearing slacks, not tights, and red tennis shoes, not spats.

I took a look at the YouTube video of her commercial. I didn't notice a single tap dance step in the commercial so it follows that there wasn't any tap dancing in this re-creation of her commercial dance.

So to summarize your objections: "He's tap dancing" FAIL; "He's wearing spats" FAIL; "He's wearing tights" FAIL.

Otosan is a cool dude, too.

Sorry, but I think the problem is with you, not the black dude. I for one won't complain about the Aunt jamamamam jam because I've never heard of it and I have no idea what you're talking about. I see no 'typical black stereotypes' when I see Dante. I see no tights or spats or shoe-tapping. As you say, he's a cool dude.

Otosan is a Hokkaido-ken, not a Shiba. (and he's actually two dogs; they use one who's good at SitStay for the stationary shots, and another for the action shots.)

Wow, so many hater responses. This is like why don't you guys write and complain about the Aunt jamamamam syrup and other stuff that was so promoted using typical black stereotypes. Sorry, but I see this whole thing as using a black dude dressed up with tights and spats an shoe tapping abilities. It is a racist gig. I know Onichan is Black and the dog is white and it is a cute Chiba. I have a black Chiba Friend with cute eyebrows and it begs me to kiss and sits and rolls and gives me its paws for treats. I hope Onichan Milks the system though and makes a killing, but make that Cocoa Milk. He knows what he is doing working around this system. Good dude by the way. I know him

Moderator: Readers, we have already ruled that this thread has nothing to do with racism. Please make no further references to it.

goddog, you're attributing racism to the promotion because he is wearing a bow tie!?! The mayor of Washington D.C. regularly wears bow ties when speaking in public. Do you think he feels it is a racial stereotype?

As for the dance, the article says that is the dance SHE performs in her Pocky commercials. Whether it's tap, tango, or foxtrot, they're performing it here because of HER, not him.

White Day, White Dog. It makes perfect sense. The only one here that seems to have a problem with Dante's color is you, goddog.

goddog -

Yes, you are missing something. Dante is the oniichan in the Softbank White family; he's black, his sister and mother are Japanese and his otosan's the most famous white dog in Japan. There is no reason at all Dante would not be happy to read this little piece when he wakes up tomorrow.

It's the over-sensitive reaction to any mention of colour on your part that's racist, not any reference to the White family who are a revered Japanese institution that aptly illustrates the saying, Jinrui mina kyodai.

Having lived with a black Shiba with cute white eyebrows and all for the past five months, I reckon the reason they didn't use one in the commercials is that the cute little blighters are the very divil to train. And I've got the scars to prove it.

designed in the shape of the White Family dog.

Um maybe I am missing something here, and I am not a racist, but isn't Dante a Black guy? Couldn't they make the shape into a Black Shiba with those cute white eye brows they have? Something wrong here in this whole story. Yeah, the girl and him are cute together, but the whole tone of the story leads to racism. If he is a black man, then he is not going to be happy to read this when he wakes up tomorrow morning.

Moderator: Racism has nothing to do with this topic.

Man, that's gotta be humiliating doing a stupid dance like that in front of the cameras

He's dancing his way to the bank.

Wonder how she's finding life in Japan after living in Oz.

Pretty rigid I would say

0 ( +0 / -0 )

tmarie: maybe because her parents are Japanese for example?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Her parents took her Japan at 14? Why? That is around the age that most foreign parents flee so their kid doesn't have to deal with the school system. Wonder how she's finding life in Japan after living in Oz.
