This is the second time that DC has bowed to fundamentalists. Back in the 90s, writer Rick Veitch resigned after his story where Swamp Thing meets Jesus was pulled. It was to be the culmination of Swampy's epic voyage through time and apparently was very respectfully done.
Whatever happened to artistic expression and freedom of speech?
Strangerland
Religious fundamentalist extremism killed it.

Remember the Catholic uproar about the movie 'Dogma'? Religion has no sense of humor...
Toasted Heretic
Or Life of Brian?
Religions need to be satirised, not just be portrayed unquestionably.
Kestrel
How about just substitute Muhammad for Jesus in the series? You guys ok with that?
Toasted Heretic
I refer you to my answer above.
Can't make it any clearer than that.
Jimizo
Are you prepared to do it?

I imagine those here most triggered by this news are the type who usually dismiss comics as for kids/worthless etc.
If comics aren't their thing, perhaps they should read Behold the Man by Michael Moorcock, or Christopher Moore's Lamb, The Gospel According to Biff, or Percival Everett's American Desert: A Novel?
I'm just disappointed with DC, but as I said, it's happened before. Comics are an easy target for the fundamentalists, that's how the Comics Code Authority came into existence.

Good. Leave the Lord and King of Heaven and Earth out of comic books. He deserves far more than that.
Jimizo
You are entitled to that opinion.
Those who don’t share that opinion are entitled to depict and even mock that opinion in a comic book.
It’s a freedom thing. A thing far more important than a religious opinion or any other opinion.

Seen both of them - no censorship occurred. The producers pushed on.
Toasted Heretic
Actually, Life of Brian was banned in Ireland, so you could, I guess, call it a form of censorship. At least on behalf of the Irish Film Censor's Office, back in the day.

At the very least, a Michael Bay blockbuster. Rami Malek would be a great choice.
Luckily, America has the First Amendment but it's a shame that such freedoms are being threatend by the religious right.
Toasted Heretic
Evidently not. There's been hundreds of depictions of Jesus in literature (aside from the Bible) some depictions have been satirical, some critical, some respectable and so on and on.
He's one of the most written about historical figures, ever. Whether one buys into the divinity theories or not, his character makes for fascinating studies throughout the years.
Mocheake
Good idea they killed that ridiculous garbage.
Deadforgood
The only way to settle this, is to close our eyes, and ask Jesus in prayer.
"Our father who art in heaven, do you read DC or Marvel?"

Japan has Jesus and Buddha in the "Saint Young Men" series

Fortunately. That doesn't change the fact that the religious nuts threw a hissy fit that someone might make a joke about God.
Whatever they do, I hope they don't catch on to Preacher, I love that show.
