The Posies and Pavement were better bands

They were nowhere near as big.

I loved and still love Nevermind, but the the other albums don’t really grab me. There are some storming tracks on In Utero - Pennyroyal Tea and Heart-shaped Box, but the album is not one I listen to right through. Maybe my expectations were raised so high after Nevermind.

Same here, but the more I listen to it (played it for the first time in years, recently) the more it grows on me.

I think Cobain didn't want to serve up more of the same, hence the less commerically friendly album.

At the time, I was listening to Nirvana, I was also listening to (amongst others) Sonic Youth, Jane's Addiction, The Pixies, Lard, Ministry, Public Enemy etc. But Nirvana had the moment. They made bands like Guns N' Roses look cartoonish and redundant.

Guns N‘ Roses getting a bit of a ripping here. They were okay. I liked them better than the fluffy blonde perm rockers of the eighties.

The Posies and Pavement were better bands.

Pavement was one of the worst bands of that decade. All the Malkmus took from punk rock is that he didn't have to try very hard or tune his guitar to play onstage. There is not one song in the Pavement's cynical ironic discography that even comes close to whiffing the greatness of Nirvana's worst. Indie hipster trash of the worst kind.

I find In Utero to be a much deeper record. I love Nevermind of course but the combination of the saturation of the singles in the mainstream and that it is basically a heavy pop record (not a slight just a comment on the hooks and tunefullness) made it so that I can hardly ever go back to that record. It is a superb collection of songs whereas I find In Utero is a record that keeps you in the same sonic headspace for the whole record. Obviously there was an amount of self-sabotage to the record that he even admitted once they got too big and started seeing meatheads showing up to shows but to me it is still mostly melodic (besides Friendly Radio Unit Shifter).

I think if he hadn't taken his own life and the band had gone on to make a few more records people would have looked back at In Utero as the moment when Nirvana really found their sound. That is unless he really did make the new wave/breakdance record he was threatening to make in those last interviews.

Maybe that’s where we differ. I tend to like albums that have a variety of things going on. To take the example of one of Cobain’s idols, the Beatles, the greatest Beatles albums for me had all kinds of things going on on one album.

Also, I just don’t think the majority of the songs on In Utero are anywhere near the quality of those on Nevermind. Having a particular sound on an album is good, but the individual songs need to stand up.

25 years, crikey. Cobain was a talented guy so it's an endless source of sadness that we never got to hear what he was going to do next.

Man, could he write songs - beautiful, depressing songs. I've always wondered that if he could have overcome his depression... I dont know... could you imagine happy tunes by this guy? What a wonderful thing they would have been to hear.

All the arm chair music critics back in full force. This band is the best, that band is garbage. Didn't realize so many professional musicians frequent Japan Today. Cool!

I remember that sad day, a specially made flag at a frat house near my university proclaimed ' Rock Is Dead. April 4, 1994'. Actually there already was a newer 'new wave' of alternative rock out there, good alternative bands like Soundgarden, STP, Dinosaur Jr. I saw the latter band @ a beer fest last year and they're better than ever! On the same token, after Nirvana's implosion the other grunge bands picked up the momentum but some really awful foreign grunge bands like Bush and Silverchair arrived and they SUCK. Then from America sprang Creed ('CRUD') and boy do they ever ess you cee kay. Still, out from Nirvana's ashes we got the Foo Fighters and they are GOOD!

Nirvana was a decent been, but Kurt Cobain definitely had to struggle with his personal demons. I personally think that they were a little bit overrated even back then, there were other bands that I thought were way better including Soundgarden, Alice in chains and Pearl Jam , but as I always say music is Subjective, but from a melodic and creative take, I didn’t think they were that great. Heck, even Hole was way better artistically and progressively music wise.

In America critics have coddled Creed for being a 'spiritual'/'Christian' band (just like U2 mentions God in many of there songs). There's been a lot of terrible U2 wannabe bands out there ever since the late 80s (and U2 is a GREAT + WONDERFUL band). Therefore Creed has drawn in some 'Contemporary Christian' fans who will listen to anything with a JPM ('Jesus Per Minute') ratio. IOW, manufactured for the 'Christian' market, despite the undisputed fact that Creed's singer says the 'GD' word many times in 'What's this Life For?'.

Needless to say, that has caused controversy. But on top of all this pretension, Creed is a 5th rate Pearl Jam wannabe band. They just plain suck, period. I love U2, seen them twice but I don't care for many of their lousy imitators. U2 is great but Creed sucks. I like Pearl Jam too but who needs a 10th generation clone of that band? Creed is CRUD.

Some people must like them.

Some people like Celine Dion, John Tesh, Yanni, Shania Twain and the Spice Girls but that doesn't mean I have to. Nirvana is the most important thing of the 90s. After grunge 'fell out', rock didn't get exciting or alive again until the late 00's.

Yes sir. And I think no less of you because you like a band I do not like. Talking up your favorites and trashing ones you don't like is all a part of the fun for some.

For the record I've been on both sides of the record: I've made em and I've been a critic. While the former is definitely more fun and fulfilling the latter is also a form of entertainment not to be taken too seriously either from those sitting in lazy boys or those you read in the Village Voice.
