I'm sure all the animators that drew it will be getting a nice cut of that profit after doing all the zangyo to make it. Or let me guess, they will still be struggling on a basic wage and eating conbini cup noodles.

The one ‘good thing’ for Japan, carried over from the disastrous 2020.

@TokyoJoe, are you always so negative in life? I am just happy at least japan animation movies is starting to gain attraction in western cinemas. It rarely happen.

Do you even know exactly how jobs work? You sign a contract with a company and get a salary. What profits gain from the actually product itself doesn't go to workers. Have you ever seen western studio's pay their workers part of the profit when their movies does well? It's the same in every industry. From game studio to movie studio, the workers monthly earning comes from their salary and not from the revenue of what they sell.

I believe in modern working practices where staff are paid incentives based on the success of the company. I believe in distributing profits down the company. I don't think Japan has any understanding of this yet and especially the Manga/ Anime industry. The working practices at most Japanese companies are stuck in the 1800's.

Why are you happy that some oyajis at the top of the company get a few extra million dollars each to waste in girls bars while young artists can't pay their bills

It is a good entertaining movie from what I have heard, but obviously the current situation have a lot to do with its success.

@TokyoJoe, i disagree. Top of the company had always been paid well even in the west. Ceo's get paid millions.

Plus the anime/ manga industry is a very cutthroat and competitive market because of it's demands and large industry. Look at the western comic industry. Is literally dying. Is because they are use to being pampered and constantly expect paid incentives. The manga industry is brutal because trying to stay at the top is extremely hard and there would always be others who aiming to dethrone you.

You are not even sure if the staff which made the demon slayer movie were mistreated and unsatisfied. So why suddenly play the judge and immediately assume you need to stand up for them when they themselves didn't ask for any. What i saying is, that this whole article is not even bad news and you still try to paint it as such as if suddenly the movie success did some injustice to the whole anime industry.

@TokyoJoe As far as i heard, Ufotable has a good reputation and pays it's animators well.

My 10yrs old son wanted to see this so I had to accompany him. In my younger days I was a big fan of Heavy Metal and Epic magazines as well as graphic novels but never got into Manga/Anime and Demon Slayer summed up why. While the story is so-so, I found the artwork, as I find most Manga/Anime, hackneyed and uninspiring. Much like Attack on Titan which is even worse artistically. The quality is just not that great. Typical big saucer-like eyes, spiky hair, little attention to detail, overall just childish artwork. I understand that this stylized look is the appeal for some. To me they just look and sound like children's cartoons. And yet I loved the Ghost in the Shell (1995) and Ghost in the Shell - Innocence (2004). Fantastic artwork and mature, compelling story. I know that there are some others that are also in the same category but I much prefer American or European graphic novel artists. Some of the artwork is just mind blowing. My son enjoyed Demon Slayer so good for him. I didn't and seriously don't know what the big deal is about.

The amount of corporate apologia on display is kinda frightening. You act like the fact that the manga industry is cutthroat, kill or be killed, is a GOOD thing. It isn’t. The breakneck pace required to create manga within the current system is frighteningly abusive and exploitative and has led and will continue to lead to mangaka burning out left and right. And the fact that the little guys in the anime industry don’t protest isn’t a sign that they are happy with their lot. It’s a sign that they are so terrified of losing what unacceptably little income they have that they will suffer in silence for fear of being blacklisted. And trying to excuse the abuse with some lame ‘the west does it too’ whataboutism really shows the flimsiness of your corporate cheerleading. Love it or hate it, at least western comics are created by TEAMS, rather than a single mangaka who works themselves into an early grave.
