Director of 'Drive My Car' surprised by Oscar, film's popularity

No, this is crap! Look at Kurosawa movies and I am not talking about the samurai ones. Like Ikiru 1952 or Ikimono no kiroku 1955 or Dodesukaden 1970. These are what I call movies that are worth watching and they stay with you.

It’s a good film and the source material of Murakami is great. I guess you need a brain to sit through a 3 hour movie without car chases and explosions and actually enjoy a well thought out story. I want the 3 hours of my life back from watching the final Avengers movie. No plot and the stupidest franchise ever. Moviegoers are morons. What sells tickets doesn’t equate to actual filmmaking.

Been a fan of Japanese cinema for a long time. From the golden oldies or Ozu, Mizoguchi and Kurosawa, through to the new wave directors like Oshima, Imamura, Ishii and the more recent auteurs like Miyazaki, Takashi and Koreeda. So many amazing Japanese films and directors worthy of recognition over the eras.

This film is frankly boring, unremarkable and prone to Japan's tendency towards overly shmaultzy drama. Not opposed to a slow burn film but it seems that the Murakami connection and Hollywood's current faux, self-congratulatory flavour of the week being Asians made it the go to feel good choice.

It's certainly no parasite.

There have been some fantastic Japanese films, but this was not one of them. Good, but not great.

The most exiting part was when they stuck their hand out of the sunroof holding a lit cigarettes while driving! The sex scene was to pathetic to even mention and a gutless husband that I would not even call a man.

Yeah iam surprised also as its a terrible movie .

But very affective at promoting sleep .

Somebody on here must like it as we are getting many downvotes! Must be one of those patriotic Japanese who will support anything made in Japan no matter how boring!

It won because of Haruka Murakami. Academy probably didn’t understand what it was.

Sounds like if I went up to him and complimented his movie, he would shake his and say "no no no." I get this often when I compliment someone's English.

I would like the three hours I wasted of my life back.

I wanna watch but how? Not on YouTube or Netflix.

I thought it was another item in the "Fast & Furious" franchise.

No car chase scenes, no explosions...can't imagine why anyone would want to see a film like this. /s

I watched it and I do not understand why it won an Oscar. There was nothing but a very dull mood through out the film. Maybe that's the reason, director needs special technique to create that much dullness!
