All popular songwriters, artists and popular groups from the past 40 years, none necessarily “rock” but still deserving honorees for induction into a “Popular Music Hall of Fame”:

- “Eminem, Lionel Richie, Carly Simon, Eurythmics, Duran Duran and Pat Benatar have been inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, a list that also includes Dolly Parton, who initially resisted the honor.” -

Dolly Parton always a class act:

- “Parton had“respectfully bow[ed] out” saying she didn’t want to take votes away from nominees and hadn’t “earned that right.” The R&R Hall of Fame ballots had already been sent and voters to decide if Parton was elected. Parton later said she would accept an induction.” -

Pat Benetar was most definitely and necessarily “rock”.

but I agree with the sentiment

cornerstones of the genre itself (MC5 and Link Wray) still can’t get a bone while pappy shlock like Carly Simon and Lionel Richie saunter in with their adult contemporary sounds. The rock hall is a bigger joke than even the Grammys are

D’oh! - My penalty accepted for your good point @J-Dake. My earlier blanket statement “none” and attached ‘cut&paste’ quote from the story mistakenly included Pat Benatar. - Sorry, Pat. -

Yes, Pat Benatar and Neil Giraldo have always ROCKed. Pat Benatar was and always will be a Rock Goddess. Wish editors had included their photos here as well. One of the original trend setters for the era, a pioneer for MTV when they first started (and were still showing actual music videos) and an inspiration to other artists, even motion pictures and fashion of the 80’s.

Rock n roll is long gone.

A Hall of fame becomes a Hall 'o Lame.

The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame

Lionel Richie’s in; New York Dolls aren’t.

Eurythmics are in; Kate Bush isn’t.

Bwahahahahahahaha.

' paragon of female empowerment'

She paved the way for women in harder tougher rock. Pat was a welcome newcomer for the new decade. She is a strong vocalist and has a strong feminist persona. Sexuality is there but she also put on a no-nonsense approach, R-E-S-P-E-C-T you could say. Like Aretha, Heart, Joan Jett she has the feminine sexual aspect but she also took no crap from her lover (imagery and lyrics). none of this Madonna/Janet Jackson/choreographed pop tart BS with sexual overtones. Pat Benatar set the foundation (along with Chrissy Hynde of the Pretenders) and yes she ROCKED.

Carly Simon? You gotta be joking.

Another adult contemporary act to satisfy those yuppies. Another milquetoast piano act or the WASPs of America. Like Carol King (who got in last year), I didn't/don't get off on that bland stuff whatsoever. nothing adventurous, creative or inventive here.

Speaking of that, Harry Belafonte is in as an influence. Calypso is a root of reggae which is a Caribbean soul music, a rock style. And Judas Priest gets in! Judas Priest!

As for Lionel, he is a writer chiefly of soul and funk - that's rock'n'roll. Even if he's 'light', Still.

As for Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, they are from the Prince protege band the Time (I saw them in a casino) and they are acclaimed producers like Jimmy Iovine (he's inducted this year too), Nile Rogers and Jeff Lynne. So I think they belong because of that. But God forbid if Jim Steinman ever gets inducted for this!

As for Duran Duran, I've always loved that band and I always will. Sure they have the glam 'Fab Five' good looks but they also have that strong Bowie/Roxy edge and musical smarts that keep them going even today. I recently got their new CD, it's terrific. These guys have never stood still in creativity. Robert Plant praises them for having class. Sylvain Sylvain told me himself how he liked them. Now I wish the NY Dolls would be inducted. Still, with this class there is some hope. Here's hoping that the Dolls, MC5, RATM, Motorhead will get the justice they deserve. It took long enough to get RUSH and ELO in.
