There’s a saying in the music business that one hit can make a life-long career. He had two, American Pie and Vincent. That’s two careers!

Ironic that McLean couldn’t get radio airplay for the song at first, as certainly here in Australia radio stations were flogging “American Pie” so frequently that unfortunately it became something to turn off rather than to listen to. It’s a great song, but personally I prefer “Vincent” which although it was a huge hit here too, never quite got flogged to death the way “American Pie” did.

Vincent was his greatest, but AP also a masterpiece.

A friend of mine was living in a thatched-roof house in the countryside in the early 1970s. To get there, one had to take a bus, which ran only every two hours. More than once we sat waiting in a cafe, listening to AP. I never cared all that much for American pop music, but AP was somehow quite enthralling.

Both songs were timeless.

Great songs traverse generations and I am sure that there are a few getting written today that will still be around in 2070 or so.

Just a few.
