Popular comedian Hitoshi Matsumoto has married a woman from outside show business and she is expected to give birth to a baby by the end of this year, his office Yoshimoto Kogyo said Sunday.
In the staement, Matsumoto commented, "I thought it would have been better to call a press conference, but decided not to because it's a little embarrassing. "It's a delicate time, so please let us alone as much as possible.''
Tabloid newspapers said the woman Matsumoto married is Rin Ihara, 26, a former weathergirl.
Matsumoto, 45, formed ''manzai'' comic backchat duo Downtown in 1982 with Masatoshi Hamada, 46, and has been active in many TV variety shows.
He published ''Isho'' (Farewell Note), a collection of essays, in 1994 and it became one of the bestsellers of the year.
Matsumoto directed, produced and starred in the 2007 movie ''Dainipponjin'' (Giant Japanese).

jonnyboy
perhaps it helps to have a sense of humour

Matsumoto~! Out~!
kirakira25
Is there any other kind of marriage here?
Nessie
Partly sunny, becoming cloudy later on. Whinges at 5 to 10 nots.

In that case, my dear, you must be a very nice chap.

likeitis, you just gave three bad translations. Your problem with shotgun marriage is probably related to confusion over how it's used today even in the West. It used to mean one thing (forced marriage), but these days it means exactly the same thing as dekichatta kekkon (obligation marriage due to pregnancy). They're both idioms referring to the same phenomenon, and as idioms their meaning is entirely dependent on present usage.
Sarge
likeitis - I really prefer "shotgun wedding" to your other choices.
I imagine some Japanese fathers of their unmarried pregnant daughters might make it a "naifu wedding."

Is there some rule where pretty idols and TV personalities have to marry comedians?
ca1ic0cat
Going to be an interesting honeymoon, I guess....
veilside
But we're just as broke... lol

Don't put yourself down my man. The younger ladies always fall for an older guy. The older guys have life experience, know about good sex and are more patient. Older guys also make more money than younger guys.

Ihara's 19 years his junior and got pregnant resulting in marriage. My wife's 17 years my junior and she wasn't pregnant. I still can't figure out why she married me.

I could be wrong, but knowing this sort of dekichatta kekkon stories, they always ended up ...tolerating the rest of their lives or divorce. But again, J women are very tolerant people. She probably would continue to tolerate all his nonsense....as long as she has the monthly access to his fat pay checks...
likeitis
Sarge: OK, please give us a good translation.
Bun-in-the-oven wedding. A Stork-in-flight matrimony. Tying the knot with a finger in the bow.
Sorry, that was three. Oh, and they were not translations. But honestly, there are not any available. I mispoke earlier. We need a new term to describe this Japanese only term.

ha ha...another story about a j woman who succeeded in getting the man (or the money?) she wanted. Same story, day in, day out...nothing new. And poor guy, he just have to live with it for the rest of his life, just like any other guys in his shoes....:)
BurakuminDes
Fair play to him for doing the right thing by the young woman. But calling him a "comedian" is a bit of a stretch: watching him and his partner, I reckon most viewers keep a poker face, I know I do!
smithinjapan
I've always liked Matsumoto and Downtown; not the manzai so much as the Gakki no Tsukai warawanaide series. Hilarious! I'm glad he's 'taking responsibility' for things (as though what happened is bad), and I do hope the media will follow his request as much as possible.
northlondon
Nope. Japan Today has just got their story incorrect. A weather girl is a show business job my friends. Television show - weather report - girl presenting it - viewers watching it. Show business.
nodame
I think they meant that she wasn't a singer, actress, model, etc.
Nessie
So she's NOT a weather girl? I'm confused.
jonnyboy
girl gets her wedding day, wakes up the next and realises that she has a good 50 more years to live and has not up to this point in any way considered how she will spend it
Sarge
likeitis: "Shotgun marriage is not a good translation for dekichatta kekkon"
OK, please give us a good translation.

As soon as I read this, I thought of what he once said: "I could never get married and have children. I prefer to have the bed to myself, and I would constantly be battling my child for my wife's affection." O.O
northlondon
Talk about an old-fashioned headline. I mean, it's the year 2009 people. This guys girlfriend got pregnant and they decided to get married. What's the big deal ? And what's with all the 'shotgun marriage' quotes ? I wonder what will be the next shock horror headline on JT, 'Western Man marries Asian Lady' ?
GW
how long will the marriage last, I say 2yrs tops & the split will be in the news
bdaniel08
I like this guy, and like this other-Kimura man (smap)-he is doing the same : taking his responsabilies and marrying the girl !
Good boys !
combinibento
True... That phrase is generally used after a death in the family. i.e., "please let us be alone during this delicate time and don't bother us." Hahaha. Nice choice of words by our man!
biglittleman
The fact he said it is a delicate time makes me believe he had no intentions of getting married to this woman. I guess she showed him what time it was!
likeitis
Oh, and my wife says they were planning on getting married anyway.
likeitis
"Shotgun marriage" is not a good translation for "dekichatta kekkon" AT ALL.
Quips aside, he is taking his responsibilities, and good on him.
combinibento
Apparently his necktie is the only thing he can successfully keep in his pants.

Yelnats -- agree. I actually think this is the funniest thing he has done in years. Makes me actually lol.
Sidwarwick
Timorborder: There used to be shogun marriages in Japan.
thepro
Woops, should have been more careful Macchan. Now you've got yourself a wife and baby.
smartacus
All the tabloids and TV wide shows called it a "dekichattakon," so I guess it was a shotgun marriage. One paper had a gigantic headline, screaming it out. I had to look twice, thinking it must have been some momentous event. It reminded me of that quote, "If the headline is big enough, then that makes the story big."
IchyaWarFare
I like the guy and this was more than likely going to be the case for him, which is the norm in Japan.
soldave
northlondon - got to agree with you about the headline. And the story doesn't even say when the 2 were even married.
nath
He has a lot of money, but I do not think he and his manzai buddy are very funny at all. There is no deep humor here, only slapstick.
Dennis Bauer
i don't think he will stop performing, the owaranai gakko series was/is very funny.
"matusmoto!" whack on his behind!
biglittleman
He was enjoying the young ladies. He is lamenting, but I bet she is happy as hell. "Housewife here I come." At least we know he is not shooting blanks. He will now have two children to take care of now.
northlondon
Japan Today's headline is typically sensationalist and has gossip mag written all over it. Honest guy, honest situation, good luck to him. And his marriage to someone not in the public eye (which is clearly not a Public Relations exercise) is more likely to last. "announces shotgun marriage to ex-weathergirl" pulitzer prize-winning journalism....
Altria
Oh dear...I always got the impression he was very happy to be single...
nath
He should not be embarrased - What was that old childhood ditty - First comes love, then come baby, I see Hitoshi in a marriage ceremony. Or something like that. Actually, I suspect this sequence is more the norm than not.
combinibento
Congrats, and condolences, to this brilliant comedian/player. Loved his sidekick's reaction to the news; Hamada reportedly congratulated him, but quickly lamented that the two will not be able to visit Gotanda anytime soon. lol.
timorborder
"Shotgun Marriage?" There are no shotgun marriages in Japan. All young couples in Japan marry each other out of love (lol).
Actually, I like this guy's plea for privacy. I hope the mass media respect his request - for about 30 seconds. Hopefully, the mass media will get out the Doc Martens and start laying in the boot. Let the fun begin.
