Good for him that times change, 25 to 30 years ago he wouldn't have made it beyond a hotel bar.

The popularity of Sheeran is baffling. Good news though, he recently announced his engagement and did promise a few years back that if he got married he would retire. Fingers crossed.

Maybe now he can afford a comb and shaver.

Dunno. I can remember some acts who made it big 25 to 30 years ago who couldn’t do what he does - write, play and perform. Not my thing but I’ve heard a lot worse. Bobby Brown had the biggest selling album in the US in 1989...Janet Jackson in 1990...Billy Ray Cyrus in 1992...

I respect what he does. It’s a sure sign you are ageing when you complain music ain’t what it used to be.

There's a study about that actually............

"Our musical tastes peak as teens, says study - Men are aged 14 when their favorite song is released, for women, it’s age 13"

https://www.theverge.com/2018/2/12/17003076/spotify-data-shows-songs-teens-adult-taste-music

For men, the most important period for forming musical taste is between the ages of 13 to 16. Men were, on average, aged 14 when their favorite song was released. For women, the most important period is between 11 and 14, with 13 being the most likely age for when their favorite song came out. It also found that childhood influences were stronger for women than men and the key years for shaping taste were tied to the end of puberty.

It’s also interesting to note that music women and men listened to in their early 20s were found to be only half as influential in deciding adult taste as the songs listened to during teenage years.

So....... where are ya guys in that bell curve?

Nah, Stormzy is brilliant. No wonder he beat Sheeran to the prizes at the Brits.

Haven’t listened to him but I think I remember you mentioning Half Man Half Biscuit in the past. I’ll trust your discerning tastes in music and give it a listen.

I just think Ed Sheeran deserves respect for what he does. I respect those who write, play and perform even if their music isn’t to my taste. I don’t think anyone is putting him in the Dylan/Lennon/Nigel Blackwell bracket.

I'm really sorry for today young peoples because they don't know how good the lyric and music of oldies.

I'm happy for Ed Sheeran. I heard some of his songs, but I didn't feel it and can't connect it.

Sheeran's ÷ (Divide) was the best-selling album of last year and "Shape of You" was the best-selling single, London-based IFPI said in its announcement.

Sheeran is the fifth recipient of the Global Recording Artist of the Year Award after One Direction (2013), Taylor Swift (2014), Adele (2015) and Drake (2016).

I don't argue about the change of taste, of Music and Lyric in the 21st Century.

However, I really don't get it, but they are making more money than the late singer and song writer like Roy Orbison, Glen Cambell and Tom Petty. Roy Orbison had created beautiful Music and Lyric. They should try golden oldies.

They should try golden oldies.

Kids eventually do. And every generation says their music is better than what comes after. It took me a while before I got into Dylan, Hank Williams, Joni Mitchell, Captain Beefheart, Chairmen of the Board and Luke Kelly etc but I got there in the end.

Have faith in the kids, there's too much disparaging of them. Not saying you are but others fail to give them credit.

Why wouldn't he if 99% of radio stations in UK and US are playing his music 24/7? I like his songs but wish someone who can sing better sang his songs. Going forward he should just stick to writing songs for other artists. Ed Sheeran and Adele are two over hyped artists that just can't sing.

Adele sounds like a pub singer.
